As a guy who takes a lot of cues from vintage menswear, the late 60s-70s always seemed like a place to avoid. That doesn’t seem to be the case for me anymore. With its sexy update to the elegant 30’s silhouette, it actually is appealing to me, giving me a new vibe to exude with my suits that isn’t too formal or even ivy. I just wrote a long 8k blog post and recorded a podcast about this whole thing! I don’t really like structured or overly slim suits, but I think that I’ve been able to approximate the look well with my existing wardrobe. It’s like a soft, slouchy take on the rock-and-roll suits of that era. And just like you’d expect, the #runawaycollar sportshirts, spearpoints, and deco stripe ties all fit the bill for the bold, sexy 70s allure despite being firmly 30s-40s. Another thing on the countless list of style no-nos that I’ve been doing is shorts with socks. It has a school boyish-meets-oldman charm (yikes) that is actually a bit interesting to me. In essence, it really is just thinking of shorts as “short pants” rather than it’s own thing with its own rules. I mean, you’d wear white socks and loafers with full chinos right? What I like most is that it provides a way to get a vintage-ivy charm with shorts, as most shorts menswear outfits either skew toward milsurp or “Italian summer”. It also has a bit of that “skater” vibe, since skaters have always worn white socks with their shorts. I actually refrained from wearing shorts often since it felt too “restricting” with how I approach my actual everyday style, but now I feel like I’ve finally found a way to do it that is authentic to me.
