Abdul Ballout (also known as Abdul Rahman Toufic Ballout) was a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese origin, born in Berlin in 2005. His mother obtained German nationality in 2002, before his birth. He grew up in Berlin, primarily in the Schöneberg/Tiergarten area (near the later attack site), and lived most recently with his mother and sisters—reports mention two or three. They lived in an apartment on or near Bissingzeile. His parents were separated/divorced; his father, Tawfik Ballout (around 64), lived in Lebanon.
The family has Lebanese roots and is Shia Muslim. The father has described the family as “not extremely religious,” though the daughters wear headscarves. He said they do not support the Islamic State (IS) and noted that his son increasingly preferred or was drawn to Sunni extremist positions, despite the family’s Shia background.
Tawfik forbade his son from growing a long beard, viewing it as a potential sign of radicalization, and said that Abdul once told him he considered the Islamic State “bad,” though discussions about appearance and ideology continued. The father characterized Abdul as generous, emotional, loving, and having “the heart of a child,” later attributing his path to being “brainwashed.” The family was reportedly in shock after the events.
Public details on his early childhood are limited. He attended school in Berlin up to the 10th grade. Neighbors and acquaintances have described him as having seemed like a “nice boy” or remaining childlike in behavior (“always the five-year-old Abdul in his head”), with no major early red flags noted by some who knew him long-term.
After leaving school, he held various temporary jobs (e.g., as a security employee, driver, or on construction sites) but had no steady employment. He reportedly spent a lot of time on his phone or watching TV and often slept until the afternoon. He is said to have broken off an apprenticeship or training at some point and increasingly distanced himself from old friends. Some reports mention appearances at anti-Israel demonstrations.
There were several times when Abdul came to police attention:
September 2019 (age ~14): Assaulted a student on a Berlin secondary school playground.
October 2020: Participated in a robbery/extortion, taking headphones from a man at Innsbrucker Platz.
February 2022: Convicted by a youth court of bodily injury and robberious extortion; received a youth court order that was later fulfilled.
He was known to Berlin’s domestic intelligence (Verfassungsschutz) from around age 16 for proximity to Islamic terrorism and activity in the city’s Sunni Extremist scene, despite his Shia family background. He was later classified as a “Gefährder” (someone assessed as radicalized and potentially willing to commit politically motivated violence). Authorities monitored him at times, including phone surveillance in periods.
Key steps in the documented radicalization path:
June 2024 (age 19): Shared prohibited IS propaganda on Instagram (two documented instances).
Second half of 2025: Developed a desire to join the armed struggle of IS.
May 2025: Unsuccessful attempt to travel via Turkey to Mauritania.
20 May 2025: Flew from Berlin Brandenburg Airport via Turkey to Lebanon, intending to reach Syria and join IS. In Lebanon he contacted individuals he believed (or who may have been) IS members, including via Telegram.
24 July 2025: Arrested in Lebanon; a military court sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment for offenses including “incitement to religious and sectarian conflicts.”
After serving the sentence, he returned to Germany on 17 November 2025 and was arrested at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on an existing warrant. He remained in pre-trial detention until the May 2026 trial.
On 12 May 2026, a youth court at the Amtsgericht Tiergarten convicted him of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and two violations of an association ban (related to IS propaganda). He received a youth sentence of one year and 10 months. The court took into account time already served (about three months in Lebanon + nearly six months in Germany), his confession, and claimed distancing from IS. It deferred a final decision on whether to suspend the sentence and released him under conditions that included participation in a deradicalization program (around 26 sessions with the Violence Prevention Network).
Prosecutors had sought a longer term and appealed. In preliminary talks with deradicalization experts (including Thomas Mücke of the Violence Prevention Network), he came across as composed, cautious, controlled, and friendly, but ultimately was assessed as lacking problem insight and “not reachable.”
In early July 2026 his apartment was searched on suspicion of a weapons-law violation after he posted a photo posing with a weapon; only a toy gun was found and the case was dropped.
On the night of 25/26 July 2026 he is the main suspect in a vehicle-ramming and subsequent bladed-weapon attack on people near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD/Pride) event in the Tiergarten, which killed one woman and injured 29 others. Authorities treated it as an Islamist terrorist attack. He fled, was located the next day in an allotment garden shed (reportedly linked to his father) in Spandau, attacked officers with a bladed weapon during the arrest attempt, and was shot dead by special forces (SEK).
