Liquid Paraffin, Mineral Oil
liquid paraffin, Medicinal is a very highly refined mineral oil used in cosmetics and for medical purposes. The cosmetic or medicinal liquid paraffin should not be confused with the paraffin (or kerosene) used as a fuel. Liquid Paraffin is a mineral oil which is a petroleum derivative, in other words an inexpensive petrol base byproduct. It is not a natural product. Mineral Oil is used extensively in the cosmetic industries as it is inexpensive product and is generally conceived as safe.

There are undoubtedly many more but these are the common ones.
Your skin is your largest peripheral endocrine organ. The skin works by creating hormones, and allowing moisture and waste products to pass out of the body. This permeability allows two way traffic so whatever you place on your skin may also be absorbed through it from the outside. This is how trans-dermal patches work and why most of the commonly used chemicals in sunscreens can be detected later in your urine.
There for you should only place substances on your skin that you could consume such as food grade substances that are fit to eat. Liquid paraffin if consumed orally or through the skin acts as a laxative. It works as a laxative because your body wants to expel it as soon as possible.
Refined petrochemicals or Liquid paraffin are not generally regarded as a healthy product so it seems to be irresponsible to use them on a regular basis on your skin, when your body wants to expel this substance quickly.
Mineral oils and Liquid paraffin are in many cosmetics as they’re inexpensive (being a byproduct of the oil industry) and as they act as a barrier they help keep moisture in and keep out irritants. For many people creams like E45 will do the job they want it to (ie stop skin itching) in part because they keep the irritants out and in part because they stop the body losing more moisture. Great you say.
But In the long term they don’t help the body to regulate itself as they do nothing to nourish or support the body’s own systems. They support you by merely give time for the irritation to die down; this is very short term approach. If you use a natural product and feed the skin by applying something to it that will help support or heal the skin you have a long term solution rather than a short term patch. The reason Doctors etc will usually recommend E45 or similar is because it is a quick cheap fix to resolve the problem until next time. If we took a little more interest and researched the problem we could find a long term solution instead of the recurring problem created by the cycle of using mineral oil which in the long term will create more problems.
If you have irritation or rashes holistically speaking try and work out why you gets the rashes and itchy skin – if you can then eliminate the cause it will be the best outcome all round. In the meantime there are things like Shea butter or other plant based lotions – various natural skincare companies do ranges of children’s salves and bath products etc. that don’t contain mineral oils or any other nastier products. Lanolin can also be an irritant for sensitive skin. There’s a whole load of products out there and whilst some are expensive there are plenty of cheaper ones too.
Food grade mineral oil has an E number of E905a, although it is not approved in food products in the European Union, and incidental amounts in foods are carefully regulated.
