“ I’m moving at a glacial pace, ” Sebastian remarked, suppressing his amusement as he finds himself being dragged by none other than Elena ( it’s not that surprising ). “ Where are we going — I thought you wanted to go where the food trucks are. ” Something about them having a hockey celebration for making it to the next round. Simultaneously, it was masked as a break from the sport itself — a small hiatus before getting back to the grind. “ Did I say that? I was joking, ” but was he, really? “ What — ” Gravity failed him and … splash. No flailing, no time for any reaction. Sebastian fell into the water — “ Lena! “ He protested once he’s resurfaced. There was some laughter, some catcalling. “ You’re so dead, ” he threatened albeit lacking any heat on his tone as he moved out of the water. “ Get over here! ” ( He did his best to sound like Scorpion ala Mortal Kombat. )

“ that’s the problem, ” she playfully scolds as she continues to tug him along, “ are you only fast with your skates on? ” her smile holds a hint of secrecy at the mention of the food trucks. anyone could just visit the carnival and do the activities as intended, but if you asked elena, great memories were also made from ill-prepared, possibly unwise decisions. “ slight change of plans. the food trucks can come later, but first — we can’t let you overheat, right? ” she can’t help the peal of her own laughter that comes with seeing sebastian submerge into the water, and she barely catches her own breath as she cheerfully resigns herself to her fate at the hands of sebastian.

“I MEAN, it;s the same in normal families, you have the more bright ones and the more….let’s say, creative, ones.” he explained with a smirk, moving his hair out of his eyes as he looked at his reflection, nodding his head as he glanced over to her. guardian angel, that was cute. “well aren’t you just the sweetest?” dax hummed out in his usual low tone, smile tugging on the corner of his lips, although it was anything near sweet. “stick with me, i got you. just stay close, last thing i need is to lose you in here. elena, right?”

“ wait — i don’t really get it. is there, like, a difference? between being creative and bright. i don’t think they’re opposites. ” while she isn’t typically described as the most observant person around, she has gone to camp and eonia long enough to know what people typically thought of her and her siblings. she’s sure he didn’t mean it any type of way, but she just wants to make sure she isn’t missing anything. “ am i? you’re the one helping me out of here, ” she responds, smiling back at him. at his suggestion, she draws closer and watches him expectantly. “ got it. how did you know? ”

ever vigilant, rion would have to be blind to miss her hand reaching out for his, seeing it out of the corner of his eye, but he doesn’t comment on it, watching as her hand sweeps out to point to game alley. “games it is.” elena could’ve suggested anything and rion would’ve been one hundred percent on board with it, but it’s only right they go to play games, when they’d spent dates in the game room in the student union or at the multiverse. he’s only been down that way once, walking away with a stuffed animal he planned on giving to her, but put to better use. “oh dream on, ba-bautista.” it’s a slip of the tongue he, hopefully, corrects before she notices, but doesn’t dwell on it in the hopes of avoiding attention.

as they walk, he looks over at the games, contemplating which one he could appear to be putting considerable effort into winning but letting her win. he’s been doing it since day one, most notably with her illusions. she likes to feel accomplished and he likes to make her smile. it feels like an easy win-win. any game with shooting was out, since he couldn’t pretend to be bad at that without her calling him on it. “what about this one?” he suggests as they pass a water shooting game with teddy bears in varying colors as the prizes.

satisfied with his agreement, she eagerly hastens their pace as they head toward the game alley. she hadn’t had the best of luck with some of the games she had tried the other day, but she feels that it will go better this time. at least she wouldn’t have to worry about anyone being rude to her this time, since that typically didn’t happen as often with someone like rion around. she fixes him with a curious look at his almost slip-up, not completely registering what had occurred but rolling with it anyway. “ oh, i’m always dreaming, shiro, ” she playfully nudges him. “ but don’t worry — i specialize in turning dreams into reality. ”

she gives herself time to survey the area, feeling indecisive at the options now that they were actually in the intended area. her gaze falls upon ring toss, then briefly over darts, and she is considering skee-ball when rion points another game out. “ oh, that’s perfect, ” she agrees, making her way over to the water game with a hop in her step. “ that one is adorable. do you like it? ” she asks, pointing out a teddy bear that seems to be more formally dressed than the rest. “ look at his little tie ! ” she hands the employee the tickets before taking claim of one of the water shooters. “ are you ready? ”

“ c’mon, slowpoke, stop dragging your feet ! ” although she sometimes had less of a control of her enhanced speed when excited, she still felt that sebastian could do a better job at keeping up. and with the upcoming playoffs for their hockey season, elena felt it was her job to personally ensure that her friend was still having fun during the spring break. “ you said you were hot, right? we always have the perfect solution to that in miami. ” she beams up at him once they reach their destination: the fountain. “ voila ! ” she gives him little time to speak before playfully pushing him into the water mid-sentence.

“THEY CAN BE, depends on which kid you’re talking about. but then again, that could be said for a lot of houses on campus.” he commented with a small shrug, gaze moving from his multiple reflections now and settling on the girl, brow raising as she spoke about being stuck inside the maze herself. “bless you soul.” dax hummed out, head falling to the side as he offered her a playful smirk, “need some help? i think i can tell my real reflection from a mirrored one…i can totally get us out of here.”

“ that’s true. i wasn’t calling anyone else dumb or anything — they’re just really smart. they memorize all those spells, and potions, and stuff, so they always make their attractions super hard. ” she was just glad that her own abilities didn’t require as much reading. she smiles at him, truly appreciating the offer of help. “ you must be my guardian angel or something. i can see past the illusions, but this whole place is really confusing still. it all looks the same, you know? i could’ve been here, like, ten minutes ago. ”

❛ but it was my favorite dress !!! what if it’s ruined now ??? ❜ liya’s tone is almost beyond whining at this point, a forlorn look being directed at the laundry basket in the corner of her room. grease was always one of the harder things for her to get out of her clothes &&& she can only imagine that fried grease would be even difficult to get out. nevertheless, she takes out the camisole &&& skirt combination, displaying it for her sisters critiquing. ❛ i’m going for a good bold, ❜ her arms fall to her side, as if she’s admitting defeat. falling onto the bench behind her with a dramatic sigh, she looks at the pieces in her hands.

“ it’ll be fine, ” elena tries to assure her, shifting into a position in which her upper body is dangling from liya’s bed in a somewhat upside-down fashion. “ we can put dish soap on it. or, get someone to make us a potion. i’ve seen someone do it before. ” it had been less of a potion and more of a mixing of detergents, but it was all the same to elena. she looks over her sister’s ( currently upside-down ) outfit and makes a sound of approval. “ that’s definitely a good bold. pair it with those shoes you got last week, and you’ll be golden — trust. don’t look so glum. ”

“ wait — beat you at what? ” while she appreciates his fervor, she’s lost as to how this can be turned into a competition. her plan was just to drive around and tag any friends she came across in the arena. “ but that’s such a sweet offer. would i, like, call you every time i go out? maybe i could pay for you, too ! ” not that she would actually be able to afford it, but she usually didn’t have to worry about paying for her drinks.

“WHOEVER CAME UP with a house of mirrors was a fucking genius.” he hummed out, stepping closer to the mirror to examine his features, fingers combing through his dark locks. “although i can see far too many greasy forehead smudges…is it really that difficult to navigate out?” dax asked in his usual slow, deep toned voice that came when he was rather high out of his mind. so far, the night had gone a little rocky, so hiding out in the house of mirrors seemed like his best bet.

she nods in agreement to dax’s words. “ yeah ! a lot of the hecate people are really smart, i think. ” as someone with virtuakinesis herself, it really isn’t the illusions that are tripping her out — it’s mostly the mirrors themselves. she’s never been great at staying focused, so wandering through the maze has proved to be a challenge for her. “ actually . . . i’ve kinda been stuck in this place for i don’t even know how long. i think i’m going in circles, or something. ”

❛ i still don’t get why i can’t just punch them for ruining my outfit. do i look like i have eyes around my head ??? i can’t watch where everyone’s going. ❜ she sighs in frustration, throwing the now ― condiment stained shirt into her hamper &&& marching over to her closet. liya looks around as if there’s some shortage of clothes in her room, turning to look at elena over her shoulder. ❛ do you think it’s too bold to put teal with a red plaid skirt ??? ❜

“ because we don’t fight, we don’t bite, and we try our best to make things right, ” elena says, parroting one of the lines used at the preschool she helps out at. she leaves her position at the doorway and flops onto liya’s bed as she watches her figure out her new outfit. “ like — — a good bold or a bad bold? i personally don’t think the colors and pattern would look bad, especially on you, but i need to see the style of the top first. ”

day four.

it felt like nowadays, all rion did when spending time with elena was remind himself that he broke up with her for a reason. but it didn’t stop him from making her an exact replica of her favorite dress for her birthday or from finding more and more excuses to see her. exes could be just friends after a break up. but just friends never really looked at each other the way he still looked at her. and maybe going to the carnival together was just friends hanging out but something in him said otherwise.

hands in his pockets, purposely avoiding reaching out to take elena’s hand, he stops in the middle of the pathway that split off, leading to different areas of the carnival. “what’s first?” he asks. “rides? food? a game so i can win you another oversized stuffed animal to add to your collection?” / @eubautista

it’s been almost a year since they became exes, and about a third of a year since they’ve tentatively tried to stay friends despite the fact. elena often finds herself confused about what it is that is holding their relationship back, because she feels almost certain by rion’s actions that the feelings are still mutual. instead of dwelling on this, however, she chooses to appreciate the time they do get to have together, even if it’s as some strange version of friends.

her hand instinctively seeks his out, but the lack of contact brings her back to reality. despite the setting being so similar to dates they had in the past, she has to remember to not get the lines crossed. she instead uses that hand to point toward the direction of the game alley and hopefully keep any attention away from the embarrassed frown tugging at her lips. “ let’s start with the games ! maybe i’ll win you something, this time, ” she teases, her confident enthusiasm quickly returning as she’s fueled by her own determination. “ i still haven’t tried all of the stuff over there yet, but i'm feeling lucky today. ”

THERE’S A MOMENT OF CONFUSION as leo stares dumbstruck at the girl and her response. is she serious? did she really just take her sarcasm for a compliment? elena’s complete oblivion almost causes her to laugh. “—thanks,” she hesitates, not sure what to make of the girl’s compliment. her suggestion on the other hand, causes the brunette to groan in annoyance. “what in zeus’ god green earth makes you think i want my picture taken?” she spats, the anger of her practice session being interrupting rising again. she raises her arrow once again, this time pointing it to elena’s phone, “i’m going to give you three seconds to turn that damn phone off before i break it,” she warns, arrow aimed at the phone while her gaze is focuses on the girl. “are you sure about that? the useless part because you seem quite hopeless to me right now,” she sighs, “trust me, you really don’t want to know what i’m thinking.”

her returning stare is unwavering during the conversation’s pause before offering an enthusiastic nod as a reply to leo’s response. elena’s smile falters when she becomes angry again, not quite sure what she said to warrant the harsh reaction. “ you don’t have to — i was just offering. i’m no professional, but i think the ones i take for my friends are pretty instagram-worthy, ” she shrugs, then opting to not read too much into the mood leo seems to be in. “ oh, why? ” she asks, obliging her request as she shuts her phone off. “ i think that whole phones attracting monsters thing is wrong, if that’s what you’re worried about? that confused me a lot at first, too. i don’t know why people kept spreading that around when i was little. ” she frowns at her words, visibly hesitating before saying her next words. “ okay, tell me if this sounds crazy, but are you upset about something? you seem tense. ”

sitting at bread and butter, june’s well aware that elena could just … not show up; after all, it’s been years since they’ve actually sat down and talked. there’s been casual communication between them for a few months now, simply commenting on each other’s social media and sending each other odd posts, but that’s where it’s ended. at least, until june was suddenly feeling more nostalgic than usual. she’s terribly unsure on if there’s any protocol to a meeting like this ― does she bring some type of gift?? does she pay for whatever elena gets?? should this even happen at all?? consider june completely lost and nearly about to give up and leave before she sees elena. she waves (maybe a little too eagerly) so that elena sees her. “hi, um. i didn’t order anything because i got here really early.” / @eubautista

while elena hadn’t been expecting june to reach out and invite her to grab something to eat, it would be inaccurate to say that she felt negatively about seeing her. no matter what happened in each specific relationship, elena typically tried to stay in fairly good standings with her past partners, as it was difficult for her to feel any sort of resentment towards them for what may have occurred in the past. she’s in a good mood — not overthinking what may have inspired this hangout — as she steps into the store and looks around for june. smiling, she waves back as she heads over to her. “ oh, let’s order then ! thanks for waiting. ” she gestures for her to accompany her to the line. she's fairly relaxed, not fully picking up on june’s nerves. “ how have you been? twitter and instagram only say so much. ”

“ i mean, ” he whispers back to her, his mind racing to come up with an excuse that would downplay his lack of foresight, but no dice. his brain apparently does not want to throw him a bone here. “ in retrospect, maybe i shouldn’t have. ” he offers her a grin as a gesture of sincere apology, even though he knows it wouldn’t be enough to save her and him from the consequences of his forgetfulness. then again, even if he did manage to somehow remember to bring his own wallet, it wouldn’t have changed anything. anton wasn’t made of money either, and if elena wasn’t rich, then he was a little more less than what she was. “ you can’t find what? ” he gulps, already knowing the answer but praying to the gods he just miraculously misheard her. “ is it, uhh, time to…dash? ” elena was fast, right? he was fast, too. that could be a solution, a terrible one to be honest, but anton was not known for better solutions.

she looks at him expectantly as she waits for him to finish his thought, but she smiles back at him reassuringly as he admits his mishap. “ it’s the thought that counts, right? i’ve had fun. ” after a couple more moments of searching, she sets her bag to the side. “ my wallet — i can’t find it, ” she confirms, more confused about the whereabouts of her wallet than alarmed about the current situation. “ dash? what do you... ” dumbfounded, it takes her a second to get what anton meant by that. “ oh ! no, that isn’t nice, and i don’t want to be banned, ” she frowns, picking up her fork just to move her food around as her brows furrow in thought. this isn’t the first time she has forgotten it somewhere, but she usually pulled through by her friends or the grace of the gods. “ do you think we can convince them to give the food to us for free? like — what if we’re celebrating, or something? or, do you think the waiter liked one of us? ”

eonia, for all the things it did right, didn’t have a wide market for snacks that came from all across the globe, like their students did. and, though he’d never admit it, rion was homesick. with his birthday having just passed and him admitting to his sister on their call that he missed the food from home and the snacks he could get, he was half hoping that she took the hint and didn’t want her to at the same time. but, like clockwork a few days later, there was a package postmarked from sapporo, japan in his po box. he’d never told his sister where he was, it was too dangerous, but he’d sent her clothes here and there. apparently she was more observant than he gave her credit for.

sitting on a picnic table outside, he dug through the box and each snack made him more and more nostalgic, but his favorite was at the very bottom of the pack. he put the matcha kit-kat aside and dug to get out the last few things, kokuto black sugar candied walnuts and maple butter cookies out. his favorite were the pocky she sent and he was about to tear open the orange peel one before he saw someone out of the corner of his eye near the candy. “if you touch the matcha kit-kat, i will cut off your thumbs.”

“ but then how will i do this? ” she fakes a pout, demonstrating a double thumbs-up as she slides into the spot next to him and places her head on his shoulder. his comment doesn’t actually register in her mind as a valid threat, so her chipper mood remains unfazed. truthfully, she hadn’t even noticed the candy at first when she had spotted him from afar. it was only when she started making her way over to greet him that she noticed his collection of sweets on the table. she places her hands in her lap as she views the assortment of treats — many of which she can’t recognize. “ where did you find those? is there a new place off-campus? ” elena is almost confident that she knows what and where all of the edible options on campus are at this point, and she doesn’t recall most of those being for sale. she directs her eyes towards him then, contentedly watching his actions.
