âNice to meet you Eunji, Argent Do.â
He says as he extends his hand as a friendly gesture for a shake.
the friendly greetings she received were comforting; eunji hadnât realized how jittery her nerves were until she sat down at the table and a round of introductions commenced. sheâd heard of a few of the people here before from talking to jea about what was going on in her friend circle, but none of the names or faces jumped out at her in particular. jea had mentioned one of mitchellâs mates was from cheongnam⊠maybe he was the one running late? jeaâs husband was waiting by the front door for someone, and⊠well, it had to be him.
after ordering a beer for herself, eunji leaned over to whisper a question to jea when mitchell returned with their overdue guest in tow. following jeaâs lead, she stood up, an amicable smile on her face as mitchell introduced her to the newcomer. âcharming? oh please, mitchell. if youâre going to lie, at least make it believable.â once sheâd brushed the hair out of her face, eunji finally had the chance to look at the other man properly. her smile dimmed.
the face was familiar, as was the name. argent do. of course eunji knew him--it was impossible not to. gossip girl made sure the cheongnam graduates were united in one way or another, but it was more than that. the decadent intellectuals, wasnât that what gossip girl dubbed them? eunji had always harboured a special resentment for the group of wealthy, intelligent, lazy students. while she worked her ass off for half of the same advantages, they had everything without having to lift a finger and did nothing with it.
he didnât recognize her. she searched his eyes for a flickers of something, anything, but came up empty. âlikewise,â she said, slipping her hand into his. the handshake was more cold than friendly--she squeezed his too tightly and pulled away far too fast for it to be in good cheer. âjea tells me you attended cheongnam,â she continues. âi think i remember you⊠the winter king, wasnât it? one of our schoolâs special nicknames. i heard it tossed around a lot.â

She picked up her phone again, calling him again, but this time sheâd had enough, this time she was too damn furious. She couldnât fucking believe this. As soon as the beep ended she yelled into the phone, slurring her words slightly, âYONGJUN, I HATE YOU, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME, I LIKED YOU SO MUCH AND YOUâRE JUST AN ASSHOLE!â She hung up the phone and shoved it into her purse, the tears welling up in the corners of her eyes and her nose tingling.
@247eunji
note to self: don't agree to go on a date with your friendâs brotherâs girlfriendâs cousinâs friend.
eunji officially had a new rule: donât agree to go out with people you havenât met in real life. it was easy to stand up someone whose face youâd never seen and frankly, she was tired of being on the receiving end of it. tonight was supposed to be a nice dinner with a civil engineer sheâd been texting on and off with. he wasnât terribly interesting, but since her friend had set them up, eunji supposed she should make an effort. aaaand look where that got her: an hour had passed and he just had the maĂźtre d tell her he wouldnât be coming. iâm held up at work, his message said. but please, enjoy yourself. iâll take care of the bill.
what an ass.
watching wine swirl around in her glass with each circular motion, she leaned back in her chair. all dressed up for nothing. was there ever anything more embarrassing than a woman dining alone in a fancy restaurant? the slurred yelling of a woman two tables away challenged that question. eunji could only observe as the woman said her piece and hung up. yongjun⊠another ass. silently tipping her glass towards the woman, she couldnât help but feel a sense of camaraderie with her. here they were, both victims of men who clearly had their dicks so far up their butts they couldnât feel-- (eunji had been drinking a lot of wine).
well, two was better than one, right? even in misery. she motioned for the maĂźtre d to bring her order to the other womanâs table and gathered up her purse to make the move. sliding into the seat across from her, wine still in hand, eunji gave her a sympathetic smile. âso this youngjun douche stood you up?â she asked, leaning forward. âfirst date or boyfriend orâŠ?â bringing the glass to her lips, she added, âi know what itâs like. i wish i could say it gets better but⊠itâll suck for a while. wine helps, though.â

if someone wouldâve told jung eunjiâs high school self that she would one day be waiting backstage at a musical holding a bouquet the size of her head in her hands, she wouldâve laughed. and laughed and laughed. as much as she enjoyed the theatre, musicals used to be her least favourite kind of productions (not to mention tickets were crazy expensive). plays were nice, ballets were even better, and one time sheâd snuck into an opera had been heavenly. musicals, on the other hand, had always been a hit or a miss.
and yet here she was, at her third night of elisabeth. eunji attended opening night, the show right in the middle, and now the final performance. some of the musical numbers were frighteningly familiar to her; if she tried, she could probably sing a few of the songs from start to finish without looking at the lyrics. the things she did for friends, honestly. well, in this case, best friends. hakyeon was playing the role of death in elisabeth and as his self-proclaimed #1 fan, it was eunjiâs duty to support him.
the congratulatory flower bouquet was a must, as was the banner reading HAKYEON, FIGHTING! now stuffed in her purse. over the years, eunji had become the embarrassing mom-like supporter in the audience when it came to hakyeonâs musicals: the one who cheered loudly every time he finished a number, who whistled during kiss scenes, and cried during the standing ovation at the end of the show. pride flew out the window when it came to supporting her friend, though she always regretted her excessive actions once she left the theatre. Â
a few of the performers recognized her (and vice versa) and they passed by on their way to the dressing rooms. eunji was so caught up in congratulating whoever passed by that she almost didnât see hakyeon as he came backstage. eyes lighting up at the sight of her friend, eunji rushed over, beaming. âhakyeon! congratulations on your final show! it was spectacular as always, but iâm sure you already knew that.â the giant bouquet stopped her from giving him a hug, so she thrust it into his hands. âyou probably have a billion flowers waiting for you in your dressing room, but i thought iâd bring you some anyway.â

ft. @247woozi.
cheongnam high schoolâs dining hall was akin to a five star gourmet restaurant. possessing a near incomprehensible menu, smartly dressed servers, and set against a backdrop of crystal chandeliers and fine china, it boasted only the finest quality for the countryâs best and richest, served on a literal silver platter.
for eunji, eating there felt like a crime. her scholarship came with a meal card that allowed her to eat lunch in the dining hall once a day for âfree,â but she hated using it. part of her stubborn refusal to eat the same frou-frou meals the rest of the school did was motivated by pride, and part of it stemmed from her disgust at the excess her peers indulged in--seriously, since when did high school teenagers need to eat like the prime minister? was it necessary?
but the largest part of her reluctance came from a desire to avoid drama. the dining hall was where petty high school rivalries often came to head, where people religiously scoured the gossip girl website for something to gossip about, where confrontations culminated in fights and rumours began. it was so goddamn tiring; there was something new every day.
today was no different. triangle kimbap in hand, eunji was searching for a place to sit when a bitchfight broke out mere centimeters away from her. suppressing a groan, she tried to inch away from the two girls going at each other, hair flying and nails flashing. apparently, one of them slept with the otherâs boyfriend? who even knew. she was half convinced these people didnât even need a reason to go after each other.
before she could get out of the way, one of the girlsâ arms went out and smacked eunji in the face. she staggered backwards, almost dropping her lunch, but neither of the girls seemed to notice (though a few of the onlookers did, judging by their snickers). she rubbed her rapidly reddening face. âscrew this,â eunji hissed, turning around and stalking out of the dining hall.
outside, she sagged against the wall and unwrapped her kimbap. âi. fucking. hate. this. place.â another day, another drama, except this one ended up with a smack to the face. why didnât these idiots have anything better to do with their lives?

she had been prepared to just up and leave to make things easier, to avoid having to look at whomever it was that had sent her body memories of a living nightmare. but she heard her name⊠and if that wasnât enough, the voice that had uttered her name was familiar⊠and that familiarity brought a sting to her chest. so she looked up at the girl and pressed her lips together, shaky hands fumbling inside her purse to find her phone where she could type. her eyes focused onto the screen, avoiding looking into the eyes of someone who had left. ă just take the bench, iâm leaving anyway. ă
over the years, eunji learned to prepare herself for the unexpected as much as one could. surprises remained unsettling, but she could adapt to them quickly and smoothly, as if no transition was needed in the first place. with this situation, eunji didnât think she could manage to take it in stride. there was too much bad blood between them for that to happen, old hurts still fresh and raw.
she valued two things in a friend: honesty and loyalty. shin yuji possessed both traits when they first met in high school, and it didnât take long at all for the two to become friends. at least, until she suddenly shut eunji out. to this day, eunji didnât know why. she spent nights staring up at her ceiling, wondering what it could have possibly been. did she do something wrong? was it her fault? or did yuji just⊠hate her? was it because eunji was poor? did she buy into the same crap the rest of cheongnam did?
eunji couldnât figure it out and eventually she stopped trying altogether. the only times she thought about yuji became when they passed by each other in the hallways or when gossip girl posted about her.
and now here she was in the flesh after so many years. eunji felt faint. âi--â she stopped as yuji started rummaging through her bag and pulled out a phone. phone? what was she doing? brows furrowing, eunji leaned in for a closer look and was met with words typed on a screen. âyou⊠donât want to talk to me.â she phrased it like a statement, disbelief bleeding into her tone. seriously? in that moment, eunji was tempted to let her go.
but maybe this was a sign of divine providence. whatever happened in high school happened, and there was no way for either of them to change it. that didnât mean things would have to stay the same now. âthereâs enough room on the bench for two,â eunji said, sitting down as close to the opposite end as possible. âyou donât have to go if you donât need to.â if nothing else, eunji wanted some closure with yuji, to at least know what happened and why sheâd pushed her away. Â âhonestly, if itâs because of me, then iâm surprised you recognized me to start with.â
( msg â eunji noona ) just your definition will be fine ( msg â eunji noona ) well it tells you about my life so ( msg â eunji noona )  ew what the hell why an app ( msg â eunji noona ) i dont want the story thanks ( msg â eunji noona ) hm noona trying to get me drunk are you

the first thought that comes to mind is if sheâs blind. if that was the case, it was one less problem for her ( as terrible as that sounded ), the risk of being seen eliminated. she becomes wary that itâs just a trick, but the girl seems so desperate. besides, if someone were to spot her at this very moment, she could already picture the headlinesââjung soojung returns after five year disappearance, refuses to help the handicappedââand thatâs the absolute last thing she needs.
âyou⊠you canât see?â her mother would be proud, sheâs never sounded more eloquent.
of all the responses she expects, this isnât one of them. eunji blinks and looks down at the contents of her basket. itâs still blurry, but she can definitely see packages of pasta and vegetables in there. and there are no canes or guidance dogs in sight, so to leap to the conclusion that she canât see is a bit weird in her books. then again, eunjiâs not sure how else someone would parse her odd request, so maybe sheâs the weird one here.
âi can see,â she says. âi saw you, didnât i?â of course, how is the other woman supposed to know that as well? her exhaustion is messing with her reasoning capabilities and thatâs frightening to think about. it also explains a lot, like why the stupid tomato sauce fiasco is enough to make her want to wail. she sucks in a deep breath. keep it together, eunji. âi mean, mostly,â she amends. âi just left my glasses at home so everythingâs blurry.â if someone does that dumb how many fingers am i holding up test right now, sheâll be able to answer with ease, but thatâs the extent of her capabilities.
âi donât want to spend the rest of the night combing through the aisles, so if you could help me i would really appreciate it.â this time she does manage to reign in the irritation and hopes the woman will take pity on her. if not, itâs back to square one. yipee.Â
( msg â eunji noona ) what the hell ill hack into your phone right now and change that ( msg â eunji noona ) what the fuck is a twerp ( msg â eunji noona ) my brotherâs fine. you should know if you read the news at all. heâs on there all the time ( msg â eunji noona ) is that dumb gossip website still up? heâll be there probably ( msg â eunji noona ) hey⊠we can, if you want

âhow have you been?â belle asked once they sat down at the table she was waiting at. there were so many questions she had to ask eunji, especially with her job and how england was. âi havenât been to asia for so long iâm still a little jet lagged, i havenât been this awake in so long!â
âoof.â stifling a giggle at the intensity with which belle hugged her, eunji gave a slight squeeze before sitting down. âiâm just being honest!â and she meant it; the states had been kind to belle. her friend was healthy and glowing, which was enough to make eunji happy. trading messages back and forth and only getting to see her through a tiny, dim laptop screen every now and then wasnât good enough. eunji was greedy with her friends. she wanted them near her as much as possible.
âiâve been good!â she said, setting her bags down by her feet. âiâm working for kim enterprises as a project architect. itâs not the most prestigious firm in the world, but i like it so far. some of our clients are insane, though.â god, eunji had so many horror stories to share with belle over drinks sometime. âbut tell me all about you! youâre opening an effleurer store here, right?â eunji didnât know a whole lot about belleâs business venture, but she was excited nonetheless and couldnât wait to see how it would turn out.
at the mention of jet lag, she let out a soft groan and threw her head back. âi know; itâs the worst thing about travelling anywhere outside of asia, or even in the continent.â speaking of which... eunji straightened up, eyes sparkling. âclearly you need caffeine and lots of it. should we grab some coffee before i hand over your gifts from england?â
