In Defense of Jacks in ACFTL

I do have spoilers, so this is your warning not to venture further if you haven't finished reading.

First off, I love how the story was told and how it ended. Could we have gotten more of the other characters? Yes. Did we really need to? Maybe, but I certainly didn't mind the absence. I didn't think we needed to address every character that we've met. We saw Castor and Lala, and I was happy about it, but I was strictly here for Evajacks story, and that's what I got.

I think Eva and Jacks had character development in this novel.

Eva isn't as trusting and hopeful as she was in the previous two books, and I was happy about it! Girl was getting murder attempted on her, and her husband is a narcissistic, manipulative psychopath. The only people she could trust were 1) being kept away from her or 2) avoiding her because they thought they were doing the best thing for her if they did so *cough* jacks

Jacks watched the girl he loved die! He blamed himself for what happened to Eva, and then continued staying away because he felt guilty and thought he was keeping her safe in doing so. He didn't know Apollo took Eva's memories away. He was too busy making sure Castor didn't go within 10 feet of Eva because Castor did attack Jacks after he went back in time to save her! He was still around Eva, he was just hiding in the shadows or out in the balcony peering through the windows. He genuinely thought Apollo was the better choice for Eva because at least Apollo hadn't done anything to her (as far as he knew).

Jacks apologized to her under the phoenix tree, saying that when he went back in time, he thought the stones would have taken something from him, not Eva, or are we all ignoring that because of that beautiful love confession Eva gave? He wanted our girl to live! When Eva met Castor in the Cursed Forest, Jacks literally put a knife through his best friend's chest in fear of having a repeat of the first timeline! Castor wasn't even doing anything, he was just trying to have a conversation with her.

Jacks was the tortured lover we all knew him to be. He wasn't Jacks, Prince of Hearts, with a trail of deadly kisses in search of true love in this novel. He was Jacks of the Hollow, a man who loved his girl so much he wanted her to live instead of dying at his kiss. We all know how badly Eva wanted to kiss him, and we all know Jacks can hear her thoughts. Can we blame him for staying away? He literally said that if she died again, he could not bring her back. The idea of that was terrifying to him. He already used the stones, and going to Honora would have the possibility of turning her into a vampire, maybe worse.

Jacks felt different in this novel because he finally admitted how much he loves Eva. We've seen him do so many things for her throughout the series. Was he holding back in the other two books? I'd argue not really, but he certainly wasn't going to let her be with him. He didn't want to admit he was in love with her. Dude literally held her like a grudge in the first novel, a secret in the second novel, and then a promise in the third. The hints were there for us. He would literally do anything for her. He just didn't want to admit to himself he loved her because if he allowed himself to there was the possibility that she could die.

Does Eva die in this book? No, thank god. But don't act like you read their kiss scene and didn't fucking break a little when Jacks went "No! Not again".

One thing I absolutely love about Evajacks is how their story begins with both of them wanting something completely different. I think people forget that Evangeline literally meets Jacks because she wants his help getting Luc back. She’s ready to bargain with a Fate for a boy she thinks is her great love(honestly, girl was pulling a Jacks right there😭😭chasing the wrong person while thinking it was true love lmao)… only to slowly realize, after everything she endures, that Luc was never actually the one for her. And Jacks? Please. In the beginning he used her cause she was the key to the prophecy(that's what he kept telling himself lol).Rose-gold hair = magical usefulness. But the absolute gag is that he stuck around way before he knew he had a second chance at “true love.” Boy just couldn’t walk away from evangeline... even when he pretended he didn’t care. And the funniest part? He had even forgotten what Tella had looked like and the reason he was going back in time was to protect Evangeline from himself😭😭 Like… sir??? Doing all that to avoid killing the girl you’re actually catching feelings for is wild behavior

i saw someone talk about jacks's simple love confession at the end of acftl and the way i 100% agree with them... for jacks's character it doesnt seem that fitting for him to make a whole declaration of love. its also kind of his thing to show his love through actions or significant gestures like for instance: turning back time, jumping off a cliff into freezing water with her, burning his heart, taking her to the hollow to heal her where hed not stepped foot in in god knows how long etc. theres a few quotes in once upon a broken heart that foreshadows this really well:

"That was when I knew I loved him." "All he did was tell you he liked you?" Jacks sounded disappointed. "That was his grand gesture? Haven't any other boys been nice to you?" "Plenty of young men have been nice to me, and Luc made other grand gestures."

Jacks scowled. "Tell me about these grand gestures."

Evangeline squirmed against the cold ground and tried to tuck her legs more comfortably beneath her. Jacks would think that every relationship needed some magnificent gesture to validate it. "Not every love needs to make a great story, Jacks."

Jacks has shown his love for evangeline multiple times through his actions so him saying "i love you" is just the cherry on top. i know its so simple but its just so jacks. and eva's reaction being so normal that JACKS of all people said those words to her makes the scene even more precious to me. she knew how much jacks loved her given how far he was willing to go to keep her safe and protected forever. she didnt need jacks to dramatically confess his love for her to know that he loves her. evajacks i will love you forever

Jacks and the Mirth Stone

**TBONA SPOILERS**

So we all know the mirth stone was inside the clock of The Hollow, right? And while Evangeline was there, she was having dreams of Chaos/Castor and LaLa, both warning her that she wasn’t safe with Jacks.

“You’ve been missing for weeks, Evangeline. We all thought you were dead until Jacks appeared a few days ago. I think he has the mirth stone and it’s clouding his judgement.”

They assumed he had the mirth stone — probably because of his unwillingness to bring Evangeline back, or tell them where she was. To keep her to himself, and not let her go. Maybe even because he seemed happy with her.

But Jacks didn’t have the mirth stone when he saw Chaos and LaLa. He wasn’t under its influence then, because it would’ve been in the clock, back at The Hollow, the whole time. It clearly wasn’t the mirth stone that made him keep Evangeline in The Hollow either, because while he was gone, and not feeling its effects, he still felt for her, and he came back. It seemed like it was only her rejection, when she told him nothing between them had been real, that triggered the journey back to Wolf Hall. Because he always knew exactly what he felt and what was real, even while he was away.

Chaos and LaLa thought THAT was the stone, but all they saw was his feelings for Evangeline, and he just hadn’t wanted to give her up.

Guys, let’s stop turning the Evajacks novella into a Jacks × Tella story under the guise that Tella deserves an apology from Jacks.

Do I need to remind you guys that Jacks doesnt care about Tella? Do I need to remind you guys that Jacks hasnt changed and that he is only a good man for Evangeline, the only woman he truly cares about? And since I’m talking about EVANGELINE, and considering the novella is about Evajacks, if there’s going to be any apology from Jacks it should be an apology to Eva.

Let’s not forget how he treated her at the end of TBONA: he humiliated her, he said horrible things to her, and he treated her with contempt.

And Jacks has NEVER apologized to Eva.

So let’s prioritize the woman who is his priority: Evangeline Fox.

hi 💓 your ouabh posts were actually the reason why i finally started reading this series, so thank you! i just finished reading acftl for true love a few days ago and absolutely loved it. i was actually surprised when i found out that some people were disappointed with acftl because i thought it was a perfect conclusion to the series. i love it so so much. however, i think stephanie garber just struggles with concluding her series in general because i read the caraval series a few years ago and thought finale was sort of a weak conclusion? i do think acftl was definitely an improvement from finale but i think stephanie just doesn’t know how to wrap up her series. nevertheless, acftl was still so amazing.

another thing that i was so surprised to see with this fandom is that there are people who actually ship tellajacks. i remember reading caraval and thinking that their relationship felt so forced and toxic. jacks clearly does not care for tella and throughout the whole caraval series, all he does is care about himself. it is a bit strange to see that people thought he actually loved tella when all he did was simply love the idea of finally breaking his curse.

ALSO i saw people were disappointed that jacks didn’t give a huge love confession in acftl. to be honest, he does not seem like the person to give a long speech like that so i wasn’t expecting that from him. however, i was so shocked that he said “i love you” to eva. saying i love you to someone is a such a huge thing to say someone, and i think some readers do not understand how important that phrase is, especially when it’s coming from jacks. i thought his love confession was perfect and so romantic.

their first kiss was also so perfect, and it makes me kind of sad to see that some people were disappointed with that scene as well. the way jacks was so careful and gentle during that scene is a stark contrast to the scenes we got of him in the caraval series. in caraval, he was reckless and wild. but with eva, he was sooo careful, and i think that really reflects how he has changed through the five books. also, when he dropped his heart because he couldn’t help kissing her back 🥹 i swooned.

i think what makes evajacks so special and sets them apart from stephanie’s other ships in the caraval universe is that we got to see their relationship develop. it wasn’t insta-love or forced. we actually got to see how both eva and jacks started to truly care for each other and fall in love. it felt so natural. eva and jacks would simply do anything for each other, and i think their love is so beautiful.

i very much agree. in one of my analyzes i talked about how evajacks were privileged in a certain way, as they had a very conclusive ending. they are together, they love each other, they are living together and stupidly in love. i mean, it's more than the other sg couples have had so far. i don't think caraval's ending is bad, but it's so abrupt that it feels like there's really a lack of content there. it doesn't really feel like an ending.

it's very surprising to me to even look back and see that people actually liked tellajacks. 😅 i believe this is largely due to jacks' charm and humor, but there is no romance, much less a love triangle, since tella only thinks about the legend throughout the two books in which she is admittedly the protagonist.

i almost didn't expect an ''i love you'' either. i really like this confession of his, i think it suits the character a lot. you know, coming from jacks, especially, this is huge and really shows how he was just madly in love with eva, from my perspective.

YES, HE BEING CAREFUL! it's really a wonderful contrast to when he kissed tella to manipulate and kill her, again showing us how much he, above all, cares for evangeline, how much he loves her. he was so insecure, so scared of losing her and almost went crazy when he thought he had killed her. it's such a cute detail that stephanie added, i even think it was one of the reasons why she chose not to make evajacks' kiss so urgent at first. (although they both get excited in the middle of the kiss and things get hotter! 🤭)

it was so beautiful to see the evajacks falling in love, despite all the odds. they are the greatest couple we have! 😭❤️

evajacks tension is sooo insane. wdym jacks saw blood on evangelines lips and decided to clean it off with his tongue of all things. he couldve easily handed her a tissue - or really anything to wipe the blood off - but no, this man full on leaned into her face and dragged his tongue up across the center of her lips. not to mention softly and slowly like how evangeline described it. and holding evangelines head in place so she wouldnt lean in as despite knowing how much she wanted to???
