“It had nothing to do with trust, Evangeline —” He caught himself before his tone changed, before his voice turned angry. He couldn’t be upset with her for not understanding something he’d put every effort into hiding from her. “I ruined everything because of it. Because I’m hostile. And inconsiderate.” He looked away from her. “Maybe there’s like, seventy percent of me that you got to know. But the rest that I was hiding from you is a monster.” He felt like a freak in this moment.
“I’m not a good person, Eva. Not all the time. I don’t want you to think I left because of you. I left because I’m a terrible person. It’s in my nature to fuck up everything that’s good and that’s probably never going to change. It was probably for the best because I would have brought you down anyway.” His bottom lip trembled. He hoped she wasn’t looking at him, but she could feel her eyes on him no matter what. Her presence alone put him on edge. It made him uncomfortable that at one point they’d been so much closer than this. “It had nothing to do with trust. I just… I wasn’t… I couldn’t—” He tripped on his words a bit and a heat spread across the back of his neck. This was even more mortifying than he’d imagined.
“You were the only thing in my life that made me feel normal. When I was with you I felt…” He thought to how happy he’d been back then, when it was possible for him to pretend he had any future. How joyful his life was when he had Evangeline to share it with. “…like I was just like everyone else.” He shook his head. “But I did it at your expense, so I was no better than the monster I was trying to hide.”
Although her eyes remained fixated on the man in front of her. Evangeline wasn’t truly aware that she was listening to his explanation. Suddenly, the entire atmosphere of the bar felt like a buzz around her. His voice integrating in with the noise, Eva only caught onto a few of his words. The rest falling into the air without response, words that floated into the air. Floating alongside the pathetic love-heart balloon that sat at the side of the Three Broomsticks pub. What an allusive concept, a balloon focused on romance. Both of which could easily disappear with a stabbing blow.
“Seventy percent,” voice cracking with the dryness of her mouth , tears brimming to her eyes. Opting to try and hold them back. Crying in front of him would be pathetic- although not that Remus probably didn’t already recognise her weaknesses. Having blatantly utilised them for his own advantage for numerous years. A crushing realisation that Eva had built the foundations of her future to include Remus’ seventy percent. A percentage that was never going to be increased, a factor that he recognised but chose to hide. Watching as his lip trembled. Listening to his mantra of self-depreciation, Evangeline didn’t opt to offer words of consolation. “It did- It had something to do with trust..” Rolling her eyes, “If you had of wanted me to know- I would’ve known long before this. If you’d have trusted my reaction. If you’d of trusted my love.” Her voice distant, confused with a hint of anger. Her hand slide to push the glass of wine away. Full; untouched with the condensation running down the stem of the glass. Her eyes falling to focus on the small bubbles. “Does anyone else know?” Her hand going to rub at her forehead. “Shit-no. Don’t answer that. Don’t confirm that I’m the only fucking idiot you didn’t tell.”
Her hands going to scramble at her handbag. Reaching in for some coins to pay for her own drink. Paying her debts and bidding adieu. Tears spilling hot down onto her cheeks as her head lay low. Wiping at them with the sleeves of her jacket, planning the route to the exit. “Five years- at my expense. But I’m glad- that I could act as a night cap to your fucking reality. What an honour to be bestowed..” Shuffling out of the booth. Flicking the coins onto the tray where the bill rested. Settling her half. “Don’t worry- this time you would have to yell for me to leave. I’ll do it off my own accord.” A deep pit in her stomach, feeling much more empty than it had been before. Evangeline Tonks regretted being greedy, hoping for an explanation. When in reality, her ignorance had been bliss. At least ignorant, the memories soothed her. Her rose coloured lense now fatally cracked to reveal the true murky grey reality of their situation.
“You aren’t a monster...” Her voice lowered as she stood at the edge of the booth. “But I- didn’t deserve that...to be lied to, and lead along. So if you don’t mind, I’d prefer not to waste anymore time.. not for seventy percent.” Unable to meet his gaze, a gaze that Evangeline became trapped in far too easily. Her attention now turning towards the door. Shaky hands reaching for a cigarette as fast steps guided Evangeline towards the exit. @remxslxpin·
