although, having said that, what we got in the show was a direct parallel to asriel twisting her arm back in series 1. so we lost the silverparry book canon cat-tackle and gained a like-father-like-daughter moment and the only thing asriel taught her was violence so…
headcanons i like thinking about is tbod era lyra having one of her parents still alive and with her. because like, there’s no way they’d get custody of her. she’d go back to jordan and be under scholastic sanctuary until she came of age and then she’s an adult but i like the idea of asriel, especially, warming to the idea of his daughter being a research assistant to him.
because at this point, she knows basically more than anyone about dust and the authority and of course, in the book of dust, everything to do with that is still deeply heretical to theorise about and is a large part of why she’s still so in danger. but imagining her being able to actually assist her father with his own work.
like, would he finally accept the role of being her father? i like to think he would, at least.

Olivier Bonneville loser of all time. definition of boyemployee. so clearly thinks he’s the main character. spends 90% of the book getting beaten up by random men, and Lyra, and being generally racist and misogynistic, and getting sick every time he uses the aleithiometer and accidentally pissing on his socks. and then he stabs his uncle and awkwardly connects with Lyra and puts all that behind him I guess. obsessed with him.
his dark materials will literally always work bc every small child wants an animal companion that loves you most and goes on adventures with you and every adult wants an animal companion that can shoulder some of life’s immense psychologically damage for you. and you can pet it
And to tear down the feeble corpse of God! Every kid and adult wants that also!

i’m sorry philip, no you’re not done with lyra yet. i need to know what happens when she gets back to oxford, i need to know if spectres can get out now that there’s a window cut by a subtle blade, i need to know what happens next now that she and olivier now knows they’re family.
i don’t need a full 600 page novel but maybe a novella set after the events of the rose field??? 🥺
pullman using a 400yo mythical being to push his "age is just a number!" and "you're actually soooo much more mature than he (your former teacher who's been kind of a creep about your relationship since you were 16) is, you silly goose!" agenda? peak clownery
sir, their age gap is probably the least of your problems atp. personally, i don't love it at these particular ages, but i know most readers would bypass it if literally everything about their dynamic wasn't written to be as creepy and icky as humanly possible. you didn't write a 31yo man gradually falling for a 20yo over the course of their reacquaintance, you wrote him having been attracted to/lowkey obsessed with her since he was her teacher at 16! he was already pining for lyra when they met as adults in spite of barely knowing her
So I finished it… yeah so this scene of their reunion? I cried. Like a baby.
I’m glad that Lyra and Malcolm didn’t get together at the end but of course, there were way too many uncomfortable references to it for it to just be like “oh no that wasn’t gonna happen” and I suppose nothing came of the allegations against him? I presumed they were false but still not great to have against someone’s person anyway.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the familial connection between Lyra and Olivier and their ending. It was sweet and summed up their arcs well.
I am intrigued what happened when Lyra eventually made it back to Oxford though!

there was little she expected when coming into telling the story ; one that might offer the faintest chance of answering lyra’s many questions, even if much of it would drift far from what her daughter — now a young woman — might have wished to hear. & there were many things marisa herself had never thought lyra’d still have to face. much that was kept unsaid still. still, lyra’s words managed to stir something within her — surprise, perhaps. & more than that — guilt, perhaps. regret. & realisation. it was, in a way, wasn’t it?
love had never been a frequent visitor in her life. but she loved lyra — oh, how fiercely she did. & her father. he was the only man she had ever truly loved, too, however scarcely she brought herself to admit it. ❝ you’ve grown rather sentimental, ❞ was the first thing marisa said. ❝ there are ghosts of all sorts, however. like some things simply can’t be brought back. ❞ & she knew lyra carried that truth within her as well. that pain. the sorrow & grief intertwined.

Sentimental? Perhaps she had, Lyra thought grimly. In truth, since her return from the Arctic, she had grown progressively cynical but she supposed her journey east had softened her somewhat. Pan would have probably said it was to do with his leaving, his determination, to recover what she had lost and perhaps that was part of it. But then again, perhaps not. “Perhaps I grew up,” she said, and then in a quieter tone added, “the right way, this time.”
She looked at her mother before her now and considered how things had changed. Before she had ventured east after Pan, after Dust and roses and the answers her girlhood had craved, Lyra would have bet all that she had that she wasn’t anything like her parents. But since returning… and it wasn’t just Anita Schlesinger’s work on changing her appearance, she was beginning to realise how similar she actually was to them. To her mother, in particular. Dark hair, framing her face in a way that both hid her naturally dirty blonde curls and blue eyes and kept her… inconspicuous, but also cemented her status as Marisa Coulter’s daughter. Her scepticism merely added to that. She was imagining again, feeling like her younger self again - just maturer - but she was still so like the woman in front of her. What did that say about the woman she had become?
“I know,” she said, addressing her mother’s reply. “But maybe some things can be recovered, if we want them to be.”
