khalid
He doesnât like bonfires. Thatâs why he doesnât attend many of them, not even when he was in New York â the only reason why he shows up is for alcohol and some, if you are lucky, good company. But being in Lima, he figures that he can as well as show up, considering thereâs not much going on in the town. He watches people laughing and walking around with a sparklers; while he is there, a cigarette in the corner of his lips and red cup in one hand. He is handed one sparkler; he lit it up, itâs not like itâs making a big deal out of anything. Khalid watches the sparkler, his eyes focus on it for a moment, before he is nudged by some complete stranger and he starts shaking his head. Normally, he would stop whoever nudged him and say a thing or two, but heâs not the one to watch people freaking out on the party â as enjoyable as it is in reality. The British-Pakistani boy finishes his cigarette, still holding half full cup of alcohol, as he looks at the person in front of him and a smirk forms on his lips. âIâm not saying itâs as interesting as watching paint dry, but itâs not far from the truth either â What Iâm saying is that we drink,â and he points at the plastic cup, titling his head and watching his friend, before he speaks again. âWe can play some games, and find out whatâs the tension between people. Or we can go straight to making out against the tree, itâs ten times much more interesting than watching a bonfire.â He raises his eyebrows, taking another cigarette out of his pack and placing it at the corner of his lips.
Eve was walking through the crowd of people looking down at her phone and trying to figure out where the rest of her friends had headed to while she had gone to pick up a drink for herself. They hadnât intended to move, apparently, and they kept texting her weird directions she didnât understand, that led her nowhere near the group of people she was meant to spend the night with.Â
She didnât blame her, she was new in town and the new one of the group, she wasnât going to feel bad because they didnât took into consideration how she might feel when she got back from where the drinks were being handed out only to find that she didnât see any familiar places in the spot they were before she left.Â
She was still looking down at her phone when she heard a familiar voice and someone stood right beside her. It was a shock to see who it was when he lifted her gaze, how could it be possible that from all the places she could go back to, she had to be exactly where Khalid had headed to after High School? It had been years since the last time she had seen him, his hair was different and he was taller, but he was still the handsome guy she met in her early years as a teacher. Sheâd been younger and totally stupid, and almost had ended up in jail because of that.Â
âI donât think it was me you were trying to find.â She said, keeping her eyes on his face to keep track of his reactions, of the way he would act when he noticed she was here as well, in Lima. âI see youâre still trying to hit on everything that moves, arenât you? Some things just never change.â She told him with a bitter laugh.Â
