Just a little bucktommy/Buck does what's best for him/Tommy is the #1 Evan Buckley defender drabble for you on this Wednesday
[HOWIE HAN]: 1 New Message
Hey Tommy, sorry to bother you with this but any chance you've heard from Buck?
[HOWIE HAN]: 1 New Message
He told us he was still transferring and also taking a week off and now no one has heard from him in days.
Tommy looks at the text messages, coming in quick succession, and snorts harshly.
[TOMMY KINARD]
That sounds like a lot. Did you check his house?
Tommy knows they didn't check his house, because they have absolutely no clue what had been going on in Evan's life for at least a few weeks, probably closer to a month.
[HOWIE HAN]: 1 New Message
Uh. Well.
[HOWIE HAN]: 1 New Message
We kind of don't know where he moved to.
Tommy rolls his eyes, mutters "Jesus Christ, Chimney," under his breath.
[TOMMY KINARD]
You don't know where your own brother-in-law lives? Dude.
AU where Buck does transfer out of the 118 and reconnects with Tommy.
He doesn’t mean to cut contact with the 118, but they definitely don’t talk as much as they did. He and Maddie keep talking about having a standing family dinner, but with the new baby and schedules, it just doesn’t line up.
Then the Theo bomb hits and Buck really wants and means to introduce him to the 118, but also there’s just so much going on. It just doesn’t happen.
He does reach out to Athena because as much experience as he does have with kids, he is drowning just a little bit. So he has Athena, and May, and Ravi, and Harry. Which Buck then realizes, he really needs to find the time to tell Maddie, and the others. And he wanted to tell Maddie, he did, but he didn’t want to bother her while dealing with a new born.
Also, look, Theo is a handful. He’s adorable and easy to love, but he does keep Buck on his toes. He can’t count the amount of times he’s had a text drafted up to send to Maddie to get the ball rolling to introduce Theo, only to look up and find Theo standing on the table, coloring the walls, about to jump off the couch and belly flop on the floor. And, you know, he’d prefer that he get to introduce Theo over a meal or something, not because he had to call 9-1-1. So. He needs to have dinner with Maddie before this cat gets out of the bag and she finds out from someone that isn’t Buck.
Through all of this, Tommy has been his rock. Buck was worried he would go screaming for the hills. That a kid would break the fragile new beginning they had started. And there had been a brief moment where it seemed like that’s what was going to happen. But they talked through it, cleared the miscommunication up, and ever since, Tommy has been there. Seeing Tommy with a kid had only made Buck fall more in love with the man.
Tommy had received a similar name, à la Mr. Poop. He was upgraded to Poopy Head. But, he quickly won Theo over with helicopters, his movie collection, his knowledge of cars. Buck can’t blame the kid. Tommy’s pretty cool, and Buck is happy to see them get along.
So when Buck finally makes plans to meet with Maddie and tell her, Tommy immediately offers to watch Theo, before Buck can even ask. So, Tommy takes Theo out with him, while Buck heads out. Which, really just means Tommy takes Theo with him to do the weekly grocery run, that they usually all go on, when their shifts align.
While they do fun things like the zoo and hikes and the Griffith Observatory, they also try to keep things routine. Dr. Copeland and Theo’s therapist all agreed that keeping to a routine was important, through everything. And Sunday is their grocery day.
Everything is going okay-ish, until Tommy runs into someone from the 118. But they assume Theo is Tommy’s kid.
Chaos ensues as the 118 gossip train runs wild with Buck’s kid and Tommy’s kid and do they need to tell one or the other. Also, some weird feelings about Buck’s kid and none of them knowing.
Eventually, it all gets cleared up and they all slowly heal. For the most part. There’s still some tension and awkward moments. But, at the end of the day, Buck knows that he made the right decision for himself…. And his family. And he hopes that Bobby would be proud of him. Athena assures him he would be.

Shane wanted to tell him to fuck off, but Rozanov was kissing his throat, scraping his teeth over the sensitive skin, so instead he threw his head back against the wall like the eager slut he apparently was. — Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid, Chapter Seven

what Buck's storyline deserves / should have naturally led to through season 8 and season 9:
1) career progression that sees Buck transfer out of the 118 (even temporarily) working at other stations and training to be a captain or other role (end of season 8 through season 9 arc).
2) letting Buck properly explore his a) queerness (season 8) and b) grief (season 9) with new friends and relative events, introspection and self expression (and conversations with queer people, his partner Tommy, his friend Tommy and teammates).
3) friendship with Tommy that eventually leads to getting back together (season 9 arc).
4) proper wedding where nothing goes wrong (the show deserves one and so do they) and they live together and eventually have kids (season 10).
I don't know what the fuck mess this show has been collecting from the trashcan since season 8 but that's where it lives for me. I live in fic written by people who care about The Main Character Evan Buckley having a storyline that 1) makes sense and 2) is a satisfying journey for the viewer (engaging, angsty, fun, loving, forward momentum, dramatic, cliffhangery, poignant, mindful..) and 3) is what Buck's character deserves.
