Although they had just come out of the water, Ollie felt his mouth run dry the moment he heard Evelyn ask about his near run-in with Death. I’m supposed to be over this by now. It had been nearly exactly a year ago when his birthday had fallen on the same day as the Blood Moon. The moon dyed in his favourite colour and him being clueless as always, Ollie hadn’t thought of it as anything more than a cool picture for his Instagram story. But that night ended with not only the moon stained red; Ollie’s party had turned into a literal bloodbath. Though it was no fault of his own, he still blamed himself for creating the opportunity for so many lives to be taken… and for not being to save them all.
“…I, uh… almost died. Yup. That… that definitely happened. Yes.” Ollie managed to confirm through just barely put-together sentences. Was he sweating or was this just the water dripping? “It’s nothing worth mentioning. Just supernatural stuff. Vampires, werewolves, demons, a Blood Moon, using my powers so much it nearly killed me and still not being able to fucking save everyone because I was such a fucking idiot — y’know, the usual.” Without even realising it, he had started speaking faster, breathing shallower, clutching Evelyn’s hand painfully tighter. His eyes darted around as if looking for a literal change of subject, preferably one that didn’t make it feel like his rib cage was a prison for his lungs.
In his peripherals, he caught a sparkle on his hand — his engagement ring. The rainbow-coloured gems along the band glimmered in the moonlight. More than happy to redirect his anxiety-induced adrenaline, he excitedly showed her his left hand. “Did I say I was engaged?! I got engaged. Look at the ring!” Following his own instructions, he silently stared at the ring and finally stopped talking. Somehow, the sight of the ring had calmed him down. It felt like he could breathe again. “…Then,” he took a deep breath, “a few months ago, my parents were killed by a vampire.” He concluded rather matter-of-factly. “I spent some time tying up my parents’ loose ends before coming back. Been chillin’ ever since.” Surprisingly, there was no resentment in his voice. But he had just sounded so tired. “Hmm… did I miss anything?”
Nothing worth mentioning? Evelyn shook her head at his words. The story sounded quite fantastical, and yet she could tell that even getting out the few words to tell her about it pained him. Ollie squeezed her hand so tightly she wanted to flinch from the pain, but she forced her face to stay neutral. Hearing his breathless voice as he spoke broke her heart. It haunted him to this day, the same way the deaths of her family haunted her every minute of every day. She wished she could take the pain away for him... she knew how much it could change you. Currently, Evelyn was a ghost of her former self. She would hate to see Ollie lose that beautiful spark of joy that drew others to him.
And then, once more, it was her turn to experience pain. He flashed his ring in front of her eyes, the multi-colored jewels sparkling under the light of the moon. She took his hand, running her thumb along the band, rotating it around his ring finger. Her own finger suddenly seemed extremely bare, and she found herself fantasizing what it would feel like to have a ring of her own. Looking up, Evelyn gave Ollie a smile, hoping to hide the sadness that had filled her heart. “Ollie, I’m so happy for you... you’re positively glowing. It’s wonderful.” She released his hand, intertwining her fingers together in her lap.
A breeze blew through and goosebumps began to form on her skin, the night air suddenly feeling very chilly. And then he broke the news about his parents, and Evelyn’s heart sunk even further, if that was even possible. “Oh, Ollie...” she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close into an embrace. “I’m so sorry... I know how that feels. I know there’s no words I can say to make it better... but I’m here for you. I know I let you down before, and I’m sorry for that too. But I’ll be here for you from now on... no more disappearing. I promise.” The words poured from her mouth before she even had time to think about them. It had been literal ages since Evelyn had promised to be there for anyone. It meant she couldn’t leave, couldn’t run when things got difficult. Perhaps it was time for her to change, be better... find herself again. Pulling away, she looked into his eyes. “Want to go find somewhere warmer? I’m starting to freeze.”
