“You have to have really lived in the bullshit to be an expert at detecting it. But don’t tell Grace I said that or she’ll take that as a challenge and try to live in a dive club for a week or something and that’s not something I’d recommend to anyone.” Emilia gave a small smile as she thought about how relieved Faith would be to know that their talk worked and that things would be finally moving forward. Another one of her little miracles coming true. “Hey I’m the one still living with her and married to her, I’ve got to protect myself! I’ll make sure she knows. I think even knowing we spoke today will take a lot of weight off her. We did good in the end kiddo.”
Emilia laughed loudly at Eve’s reaction to her disclosing Faith’s performance outfit. “You asked for it! I told you you wouldn’t want to hear it!” Hopefully now that Eve got how gross it was to hear about her moms like that, maybe the probing about the stripping would stop. Well, it was Eve, so probably not. “See that’s what an uncool person would say sooo…” Emilia grinned cheekily and then rapidly shook her head at the offer. “Sushi sounds absolutely delightful, I’m really really looking forward to it honey.” The woman smiled sincerely as she moved to stand once the ringing of the open door hit her ears. “I did, and I got way more than I had hoped for. I love you so much Evie, I’m so proud to be able to tell people you’re my daughter.” Emilia would have gone in for a hug but understood that boundaries probably were still up for now. “Remember, don’t drink on the job!” She sing-songed as she made a move to exit the bar.
“Amen, mom. First thing we’ve agreed on in a long time,” Eve laughed, thinking of her younger sister, too determined for her own good. Although she didn’t always get along with Grace, Eve admired her sister’s willingness to put herself on the line for the good of humanity. She just hoped Grace wasn’t stupid enough to get herself shot in one of her rage-against-the-machine moments. “Okay. Thanks.” Eve may have warmed up to Emilia, but she was still very far away from Faith. Something in her still felt wary of her other mother, despite all of this.
Eve smiled, her Juul gripped between her teeth as she grabbed a beer for a new patron. As people began to file in, Eve felt a little too vulnerable expressing her love out loud with so many stony-faced businessmen and bikers around and chose to sign her goodbye. Although she had at first hated her mothers for forcing her to learn ASL - just another perfect facet of their perfect family - she appreciated it in moments like these, where it acted like a secret code. I love you too, she signed to her mother. See you on Thursday. As she watched her mother walk away, Eve felt both on edge and at peace simultaneously. She had never wanted to be a member of her family, but it did make her feel appreciated to know that she was wanted. Well, maybe she was turning over a new leaf. What harm was that?
