I disagree with everything that says that the ‘firsts’ are the worst part of grief. To me, it’s worse when the numbness of shock and denial has worn off, and you’re more aware of their absence. It’s worse when the reality sets in that they won’t be there for this or any other holiday. It’s worse when the unspoken time-limit on grief has passed, and the support of friends and family has dwindled. It’s worse when everyone expects you to be happy and to celebrate again.
