Exit Music // Self-Para
Every inch of Everett's being had been exposed since she had heard of her fathers death. She had finally shown someone, shown Lukas, who she really was, from the inside out. Goodbyes had been said, as inconspicuous as they were, and now she was faced with the end. It was like a long, drawn out day that she had been waiting her entire life for. But all good things had to come to an end. And the time had come.
Despite Dr. Tyde's promise that she would be under suicide watch, as far as she could tell, there were no nurses in sight. Not a single one. And the one posted at her door wasn't even there when she returned. As the door to her room closed behind her, she stared at the slowly dimming light, illuminating every inch of pristine white in a bath of diluted glow. Gentle blue was beginning to reflect the nights wishes, as the sun disappeared and she found herself drawn to the window. Her fingers pressed against the pane of glass, eyes staring out at the last sunrise she would ever see. Turning away from it after a few minutes of silence, she faced once again the room that she had called her own for so long.
Soon, there would be someone else living here. Another patient, hoping for a way out. She hoped they wouldn't find the same solution that she did.
The surfaces were empty now, all of her stuff packed into a neat little box. She had done the work for everyone else. Fingertips ran across the empty desk, feeling the cool wood beneath the pads of her fingers. How many memories resided in this room? How many nights had she lay awake, thinking of thousands of things. Thinking of Jason and Lukas and Dustin... Thinking of home and Zeke and her father and her mother... Things that now seemed distant. Like they had just been small threads in the delicate weaving fabric that was her life. A fabric that was slowly ripping, down to it's last, unbroken loop.
The box was placed on her bed, a note laid beside it perfectly. There wasn't much inside the box. A few books, a journal that she had scribbled some bullshit in and doodled stickmen she had created during group therapy sessions... Beside those, she had stuck her razor. No need in hiding it now. A half-full pack of smokes, a box of matches and a few random keys that she had found lying around.
This is what she had been reduced to. The entirety of her life was now packed into a small, perfectly square cardboard box. It sounded like something out of a Radiohead song. The thought made her smile, a sad little smile, before she picked it up, along with the note and moved them to her desk.
Next, she found herself in front of the mirror, eyes staring back at the ghostly white dead girl that she found in the reflection. She had to admit, she looked like shit. Bags under her eyes and sunken in cheeks, dull and lifeless eyes, limp hair. Just as dead on the outside as she felt on the inside. Her fingers had grown bonier than before, knuckles sticking out and turning white as she unturned the bottle of pills in her hand. They weren't hers. She had grabbed them a long time ago, to deal with headaches without having to ask the nurses for painkillers. But the bottle was still practically full.
Not for long.
One by one she lined them up in a neat little line, staring down at the powder white circles. Soon, the bottle was empty and she set it on the sink counter, taking one last look at herself. The only comfort she had, in knowing that her body would soon rot beneath the Earth, was that it was better for everyone. For Jason and Lukas and Derrick and everyone else here. She was a burden.
Lifting the first, she popped it in her mouth, eyes closing.
"One for Lukas..." Her voice was tired, distant and dying in the silence of the bathroom. Another pill and again she spoke to herself, the few last words she would ever form. "And one for Jason..."
And so it preceded. She would swallow a pill and name a name, ignoring her own reflection, somewhat afraid of the expression she wore. It was torn between serenity and inexplicable pain. Forty one pills later and she felt sick, full of water and the names had stopped many pills ago. Clutching the side of the sink, she listened to her shallow breathing. Tears were beginning to form, streaming down her cheeks like rivers, droplets greeting the sink with quiet sounds.
Slowly, she stumbled back into her room, falling onto her bed. The room was beginning to spin, everything fading in and out. And the pain... Her stomach was working to make sense of the sudden overdose that was beginning to kill her. Her head was throbbing and the water she had drank threatened to make her puke up all her efforts. But it stayed down. And minutes later she had managed to roll onto her back, hair fanning out along her pillow, framing her head like a scene from a horror movie. Feeling was beginning to leave. The pain was still there but she welcomed it and let her eyes close.
The darkness.
It was all she could focus on, all she could grasp with her sub-conscious and she wouldn't have it any other way. There was a suspension of numbing silence, where she wasn't sure if she had fallen asleep or if she had actually died but then... The faintest smell of ocean water caused her eyes to open. Here she was. She had made it. A glance to her side and yes... Lukas was with her too, hand outstretched, waiting for her to take it. The sand beneath her feet felt like heaven and she felt weightless as her fingers clasped with Lukas's, allowing herself to be pulled into the gentle wake that lapped at their feet.
She was free. And she had kept her promise - she knew that she would visit that island with him. She had known it all along. For her mother used to say that heaven was whatever you wanted it to be.
And more than anything, Everett wanted her heaven to be exactly that.
Parallel | Everett and Jason
“Why won’t you just say goodbye?” Jason muttered, a want of bitterness hidden beneath his voice, but only his tiredness seeping through. His neck could barely hold his head up any longer with how tired he was just then, eyes droopy from crying. He sighed and looked at her, wishing his eyes could stop producing tears, even if they never left his lids.
Jason didn’t know what he had left to do. He wanted to say goodbye to her, but any variation didn’t feel right. And he didn’t want to. He wanted her to leave, because Lukas was better off without her. When she left, he had started to do better, he was composing himself, he was looking on the bright side, but now, that she was leaving again, he was worse than ever. Jason didn’t know what to do. He wasn’t even looking at himself, not in that moment. He needed to be strong for Lukas and for her. Someone, and it was generally Lukas, had to be strong and helpful, the one shoulder to lean on.
"Because I don't know how." It was the first response to come to mind. The only response she had to give. And as her eyes focused on him, instead of the white of the floor, she felt that still unfamiliar feeling of exposure. This was her. No pretenses or lies or pretending. And only Lukas had seen this side of her, not too long ago. Perhaps this was how she said goodbye. Baring her soul for a brief moment, with the comfort of knowing that she would never have to do it again.
"Everything I think of saying doesn't seem right. It just... doesn't fit." She could see how tired he was. Tired, sad and fed up. With her, mostly, but with everything in general. She took happiness in knowing that soon enough, Lukas and Jason could move on from her. Maybe they could find happiness together, without her lingering presence. And there was something final in the way that she gave him a half-smile, eyes closing once more for a few seconds before she moved closer, wrapping her arms around him. She had hugged him before, of course. But this was more than that. It was the end.
Parallel | Everett and Jason
Jason’s mouth stayed shut and his eyes closed. He felt like vomiting at her touch, or rather, when she’d left it to be gone. He gulped, looking at her and letting his breathing release from his lips, staggered. He didn’t know what to say to her. He had a million things running through his head, telling him to say to her. Things he could throw in her face, he could beg her not to stay. He could say, get Lukas, and they could burn everything in this place. It needed to be burned.
His eyes felt so tired, so done with everything. The scabs on his arms were still bandaged, still possibly bleeding from his encounter with Allison. He wished, so terribly, that he had gone through with it, that he had cut deep enough and that Lukas wouldn’t have found him. He regretted it each day, especially days like this. It felt like, to him, that she was leaving for so much longer, that she was keeping something from her. But he didn’t know what to say and he didn’t, he couldn’t, call her a liar just before she left.
“I…” he stopped before he could start. He felt so tired of saying “I”, he felt like it wasn’t anything that could start anything he wanted to say, so he closed his mouth and fell silent once again. How could he say anything to her? Was he to say he loved her? Would it be true even if he could muster the words? It would be true, he was certain of that. But he wasn’t sure that saying it was the right thing.
What could she say to him? There wasn't much. Unlike with Lukas, Everett was still closed off. There was still something holding everything back from him. But she could feel it slipping. The two people in the world who got to see the true her, would be the two people in the world who ever saw the last of her. Inhaling for a moment, she let her eyes close, lids sliding over empty eyes as her thoughts tried to sort themselves out. There had been many things that she wanted to say to him before she got here. Goodbye, thank you, I'm sorry, I love you. But none of them seemed right anymore.
And by his lack of conversation, she assumed that he didn't know what to say either.
"You're quiet, too. Sad and quiet. Quiet and sad..." Perhaps she sounded crazier than normal as of now, considering it seemed like she were rambling on about nothing. But in reality, she felt more clearheaded than ever before. Things were working out. She no longer felt desperate to escape, because now, she knew her exit plan. Her body felt empty now, like she were just floating, drifting from place to place, until finally, she could be alone. She had said her goodbyes to Lukas. Now she just had to say goodbye to Jason.
Obsession ~ Skillet
Your touch, your ways Leave me dumb without reason
Your love, my cage My prison so pleasing I spend my days Tangled in thoughts of you Stuck in this place Resigned to be your fool I thirst no longer Drenching my soul Pour out like water You’re my only infatuation Don’t leave me stranded In my obsession My purpose, my possession Live and die in my obsession My obsession Oh Come down to me Don’t ever say that it’s over I kiss your feet Worship the air you breathe Your love, my gift You go and I will follow My dream, my wish Don’t leave me here so helpless I thirst no longer Drenching my soul Pour out like water You’re my only infatuation Don’t leave me stranded In my obsession My purpose, my possession Live and die in my obsession My obsession Am I a lunatic? I’m going crazy For just a word from For just a touch from you And I’m exploding like chemicals I’m going crazy, can’t get enough
Walking with Spiders // Everett and Lukas
Love; a four letter word that had the power to destroy lives. Love; a feeling so detrimental it could bring even the strongest of people to their knees. No’one was safe from this volatile emotion; Lukas included. Everett had proved this to him.
The girl now lay curled into his person; shuddering sobs falling out in shattered cries saturated by the sorrow that had been festering for so long. Lukas let his fingers run over the trail of rippled vertebrae; finger tips massaging the skin in circles as she sobbed into his shirt, each cry was a shard of glass; a shard of glass that plunged into the fleshy outer of his heart. “shh…” he soothed as he placed a gentle kiss atop her forehead, free hand coming up to stroke the side of her face that was stiff from the remnants of tears.
Everett had wriggled her way in; catching him before it was to late, saving the organ of his that had almost withered from misuse. It was because of her he was getting better, her strength and her willpower a driving force for himself to portray the same level of stamina. She held his feelings captive in a heart shaped box that she had crafted from the material of his soul; owning what remained of that precious organ. The love he felt for the girl who was sobbing before him was painful; a crippling feeling that held his heart in a vice. A vice that threatened to tighten at any given moment.
“I love you too” he whispered into her hair; the phrase said without waver. Love was a torturous journey; equip with all sorts of challenging obstacles and hurdles. Full of pain, drenched in venom and anguish but it was also beautiful. Posinously beautiful. Something Lukas had learnt. His own darkness had moulded with Everett’s own to create a light powered by an ironic source. It was a negative and a negative summed together to create something positive; a positive that had helped both teens to no end.
But now she was here, broken and bruised shuddering in his arms. No level of sympathy would help pathe over these cracks; not this time. The cracks were too deep to cement over this time, her poor broken soul threatening to split in half.
But Lukas did remember; that night they had spent curled up in the courtyard. How they had watched as the sky flooded with blood and roses and watched as the final flames of afternoon licked at the sunset sky and was promptly replaced by a cool sheet of indigo. He remembered how buds of light had stained the raven wings of nocturne; tiny shards of silver light. Light that had reflected in the tunneling darkness of her eyes. Those eyes- those populous pools of void colour so deep and so empty that Lukas yearned to fill them with the spark of his own. How they had mused over white beaches and turquoise shores; verdant forests and long bitter sweet nights of the most beautiful love making.
But she was giving up. He could hear it. In the gentle ebbed undercurrent of her voice.
“No Everett…you can’t do this beautiful. I am going to do it someday. You know why? because we’re going to do it together me and you…me and my baby okay? Okay..you’re not giving up…no..you can’t.” Lukas was border line tears now, his arms scooping her up so she was collapsed into the hollow of his chest, his arms cradling her as he rocked her tiny frame back and forth; letting the sobs saturate the silence as tracks of silvery sadness ran down his own cheeks. “Please..I love you.” he whispered, hands stroking the silk soft fall over her hair.
Feeling him soothe her, Everett could sense it. She could feel that pesky spark of hope, fogging her mind and caressing her thoughts, sliding down her spine like a shiver of unwelcome unfamiliarity. Often, she had sought comfort from Lukas. But she had never been as open as she was now. Everything was laid out, in neat little stacks. Her feelings, her heart, her last shred of happiness. It was all in this moment. And she knew it had to end. There wasn't a second option for her this time. The hope was shoved aside, forgotten, discarded. It wasn't welcome here. This was her time to say goodbye, not to feel like she could live another day. Because she couldn't. Wouldn't.
I love you too. Those words only brought more tears, a tighter grip on the one who was trying so desperately to keep her together. Was this selfish? To subject him to her pain, knowing that she wouldn't be alive come morning? Perhaps. But she had made worse decisions than this. She felt like a drug addict, searching for her last hit. A last high, that would give her just enough strength to finish what she had started. In essence, that's all she was anymore. An addict. Addicted to this feeling of gut-wrenching, nerve numbing obsession. No one could have loved her better than Lukas.
Others had tried. Her parents, Zeke, Jason. But she had shut them out. And, up until today, she had shut Lukas out too. Now, however, she was baring her soul on the table, pure and genuine emotion for him to see. There was no fear, this time, of rejection and as she felt herself being pulled into his chest, completely enveloped by his arms and his hands in her hair, she let herself be.
His words of encouragement fell flat on her ears. She appreciated them, savoured them, but in the same breath, she knew that this day would have come eventually. Everett would never be able to open up to someone like this, to love them completely and without falter, and live to see the next sunrise. Perhaps she had known this, all along. Perhaps that was why she had never accepted it, always ran away from the first sign of affection. Because she knew that the weight of the insurmountable passion and love would break her, more than any other abuse could have.
Love would kill her.
Pulling away, only slightly, she stared up at him, feeling small. Here he was, just as broken as she, but yet, he was still breathing. Physically, she was breathing as well. But mentally, she had checked out. Laid herself in the ground, just waiting for her body to catch up to her impending death. Thin fingers unwound themselves from him, moving to splay across his jawline, staring straight at him. She wondered what he could see in her eyes. Wondered if he could see what she saw - her own body motionless and cold and stiff with the after effects of death. Wondered if he could see how this dead version of her was smiling, finally, a serene little smile that told more stories than thousands of books could ever tell.
But she didn't wonder long. Because soon her eyes would close and she would press their lips together, eyebrows pulling down as the bittersweet nature of this kiss fully hit her. There it was. Her final hit, coursing through her veins, pumping straight to her heart. The action said more than she could - silencing him with her lips, silencing his attempt to inspire something in her. It finalized what she hadn't told him yet.
"I can see it now, you know. Us. On a beach, completely alone, just the sound of the ocean. It's kind of like static and neither of us really notice it. And sometimes the sun is up, when I think about it and I actually feel warm... Sometimes it's night time and I can swear that I feel the cool sand beneath my feet..." Her voice was like a whisper, far away and words falling from her mouth like poison. It intoxicated even her, making herself feel dizzy with the thought. He might take what she said as a promise - a promise that she would try and they would get out of here and move on and live together and be happy.
But it wasn't a promise. It was her strange, delusional way of telling him what she was planning. Because she would go there, to that beach, to that place, but it wouldn't be in the future. It would be with countless numbers of little white pills, as she faded away into nothingness.
She kissed him again, just because she could, the only sound she could hear was her own heartbeat, unknowingly beating closer to it's last beat.

Parallel | Everett and Jason
Jason’s head lifted slowly from the table to see Everett, the very girl that was consuming his thoughts. She always looked worse each time he saw her, but she looked so hopeless this time. He didn’t understand why. She could get out, live with her father. He knew she hated him and living there, but until she could get on her own two feet, she was fine. She was getting out.
He sighed, then looked at her, his fingers very slowly moving against his own leg. He wanted to wrap them around her, to say goodbye and just kiss her, bury himself into her and let them just mould together, but none of that seemed right. Touching her didn’t seem right, as if he would taint the girl who was getting out, the one who was somewhat fine. He stared at her, his eyes still filled with tears and his brow pulled together so furiously for being sad.
And then Jason spoke and it was rough, cracked, dry, and breaking. It didn’t sound like him. “If we light the stairs up, you can’t go,” he suggested hopelessly to her. He felt small, insignificant. And like a child. He shouldn’t have been this way about a girl, a girl that never paid enough to care about him like she should have. He felt so lost, like something new was coming along. There was never clarity between the both of them and he wanted it so badly, especially now.
Inhaling once, deep and clear, she felt her lungs fill with air before she gave him a sad kind of smile, that spoke more words than she could ever speak. She wondered if he would realize what she was planning on doing. On how she was glad that the lady didn't come today, just so she could say goodbye, in her own little ways to everyone. Take a selfish moment to submerge herself in the last few people that she actually had lived for. But she doubted it. Everyone thought that she could never do something so... tragic. So close to her mother. But all bets were off, with the news that her father had committed suicide as well. Of course, the sixteen year old had no indication that the information given to her had been a complete fabrication but...
"Then the whole place would burn down." Her smile had gone now, but it lingered on in her eyes. Not really the kind of smile where you were happy about something, but more so, you had nothing else to give someone. Seeing him cry threatened to bring her own tears, but she managed to keep them away as she moved closer, hands cupping his face as she simply stared.
"You look so sad." An obvious statement. A blunt one, too. But she had no need anymore to care about what she was saying. If she wanted to say something to Jason, now was the time. To offer him some kind of explanation, some kind of indication of how she really felt towards him. She didn't understand it herself, but she owed him this much. Her thumbs stroked his cheeks for only a few seconds before her hands fell back to her sides, jaw clenching as her mind worked to figure out what to say.
Parallel | Everett and Jason
Jason sat in the perfect white chair in the perfect white room, the Rec room. His mind raced and he wished, more than anything, that there was someone there, someone playing a horrible film repeated over and over, but he sat int he room alone. The lights were bright and he sat, his feet curled up in the chair and his arms closing them close to his chest. He sat in the same, exact spot that he and Everett had sat near the beginning of their friendship. He didn’t know what he was doing, remembering her maybe, or hurting through it all.
He finally let his limbs fall, limp like they had been help up by nothing. He sighed out, his lips parting to let out a single, small breath and his head fell, controlled, thudding lightly against the table. He wished he could close his eyes and every problem he had stirring through his could vanish. He wished it would all go away, like or never come like sounds in this room. His breathing could be heard from miles away and the eerie silence made him feel comforted. It was what he needed, to bask in his own pain that could only stay inside him. In a room of silence, he didn’t have to talk, he didn’t have to think, he didn’t have to look at anyone. And he could wallow in whatever feelings he wanted, whether it be the want to squeeze someone’s throat so tight that they never fought back or whether it be to cry so hard that he could never breathe. Both seemed viable at that moment.
He wasn’t sure of every feeling was from her, from Everett leaving him. But had he deserved her in the first place? He never had her, he noticed that, but she would never forget him in the real world. He hoped she did. Jason could see her renting an apartment, fifteen stories up. She would go to a big city so she was never alone and she would get a cat. And she could get a job, one that she didn’t enjoy, but she would get a decent pay and she would deal with it. He could see her soul being sucked out with every new product she bought. And he could see her, one day, coming home from work and jumping out of the fifteenth story window. And then he could see black. She wasn’t ready.
Jason let his eyes open and they were filled with tears. They dripped horizontally across his face and onto the table and he didn’t bother to wipe them. He felt wrong, detached. His limbs didn’t belong to him to wipe his tears from. He was so numb. Was this his meds again? Did they change them? Did the meds change him? He swallowed, then closed his eyes again, hoping it would keep the tears at bay. They clouded, forced him to open his eyes, and then dripped onto the table. He didn’t want to deal with them, so he moved his head, only the opposite way, the way that would have made him have his head turned away from her where they had sad long ago. She was leaving and he looked back, unable to keep away his head from seeing where the girl had been before.
The funny thing about suicide, is that the more time that passed, since one made their decision, the easier it became. Somehow, she could understand how her mother must have felt, days before it happened. At the time, she hadn't been able to understand why her mother would give her these longing smiles. Lingering stares, full of sadness. But now... Now, it all made sense. The people you love make it hard to leave. But for Everett, the people she loved, only made it easier.
Jason and Lukas. Lukas and Jason. It had been this constant, never-ending cycle of back and forth and up and down and no one ever getting any answers, just confusion. She loved Lukas. She loved Jason. But for someone who never really loved anyone, her love was wearing thin, expended on the both of them at the same time. And when she would think about them leaving, she was always with them. But now... with Tyde's words in her ears... she realized that they would be leaving alone. They would be happy, eventually. Both of them could have a life and do something.
Not her.
She was a lost cause. A burnt out teenager of society. And she sure as hell looked the part. Lately, since her visit with Lukas and the news yesterday, she had just kind of wandered. Floated around like she had already died and this corpse taking gentle steps was just her ghost, prematurely haunting the halls of Belvedere. The place where she had lost her last shred of innocence to her best friend was suddenly in front of her. But for once, she didn't feel sick. She felt nothingness. And it was comforting, to know that soon, that was all she would ever feel.
She kept walking. To where? She didn't know. But as the sight of Jason came into focus, she felt her eyebrows pull downwards, a tired kind of sadness bleeding into her features. She didn't know what to say, to someone that she knew would never forgive her for what was to come. To someone that she loved, in the most confusing way she could. So she said nothing. Just walked closer, staring down at him, breathing evenly and barely making a sound.
That lady isn't here yet.
I’m never going to anyway.
Don't say that. You will soon.
That lady isn't here yet.
I could kill her. And she’d never really come.
... Don't be stupid. They'll send others. And then you'll never get out of here.
