tips n tricks for drawin’ mouths

no clue if anyone actually wants to see this, but i’m here to share, so i’ll so what i must.  here’s a few compiled tips and tricks that i’ve learned to use for drawing mouths over the years.

Lesson 1: LINES of VARYING THICKNESS communicate DEPTH

the thicker the line, the deeper the feature will look. you want a full lower lip? thicken the line of definition. do you want a deep crease between the upper and lower lips?  thicken that line towards the ends and the center.

oops looks like i can’t diss whoever that was.  sorry buddy.  i rescind my ‘fuck you’. 

so yes, you can use shapes if you want.  i don’t. 

see, i got really into drawing lips when i started watching jojo.  araki has some good refs. (i was gonna include some of my favorites but i don’t have the skill).

anyways, i just basically memorized the shapes and recreated them.  that’s how drawing works for me, but there are tricks to it.

*almost always.  i’m not critiquing art styles here.  you draw how you want.  this is just how i’ve learned to do it, and what i find to look the best.

I know you probably get these asks a lot, but I've really been trying to try drawing comic pages. I really admire how free and flowing your style is! I've seen your little tutorials and tips and idk what's wrong but I just can't seem to wrap my head around panel composition? Like I do wonderful painting comps, but I can't seem to break out. Do you have any resources or help to get started?
