Anyway, finally got around to popping open a tin of the 2025 version of Cornell and Diehl's From Beyond
I like old coffee gadgets
Trying out Dreams of Kadath for the first time this morning.
I cut my thumb with my pocket knife cutting this plug in to cubes. Hopefully I haven't bound my soul to an eldritch horror
I finally decided to jump on the small batch limited edition blend bandwagon. I picked up a couple of tins of of C&D's From Beyond. I also picked up Dreams of Kadath and this year's The Haunting.
I'll get around to trying them after getting through the backlog of tobaccos a friend gifted me and some other blends I got jarred up and ready to smoke. What's keeping me from opening these tins now? I'm out of mason jars and need to empty some before opening up any tins. #FirstWorldPiperProblems
I’m legally required to post this every Halloween
Byzantium has changed?
This is a post that's been rolling around in my head for a while, but I just haven't had time to post much of anything because work keeps me too busy to post about hobbies :(
I have been a fan of Cornell and Diehl's blend Byzantium for almost as long as I've been posting a pipe. For the majority of that time, I'd say, it's been a pretty consistent blend in terms of flavor, smell, moisture content, and whatnot. Starting about a year and a half ago, I noticed the blend in bulk has been arriving much drier than it used to (it used to be pretty moist, imo). Also, the dark fruity plummy aroma I'm used to has been subdued while a Latakia smokiness has been much stronger.
My first thought was "oh, since I'm buying bulk, maybe I just got what was left at the bottom of the bag/box/container bulk coffee is stored in, which is why it's drier and smells a tad bit different." I've gotten one or two more bulk orders of Byzantium since then, and the results are similar.
So, I decided to do a taste test between my older Byzantium, the newer and drier Byzantium, and a proper tinned version. I'd compare the two "different" bulks to the tinned version. I did have a long set of notes saved in my phone as I was smoking, but I decided to mostly ignore them now that I'm writing.
The older, moister Byzantium tastes and smells basically identically to the review I made a few posts back.
The newer, drier Byzantium smells more of Latakia: leathery and smoky. Plumminess is much more subdued. The moisture content was basically perfect to smoke. While smoking, I could taste the plumminess (I'm assuming from the perique) and a bit of sour woodiness (which I assume is the orientals). Once while smoking, I relit my pipe, and the plumminess seemed to be stronger, which lasted the rest of the bowl. It's similar enough for me to believe it's Byzantium rather than receiving a similar but different blend accidentally.
The tinned version, which I used as a control variable, was slightly moister than the drier version of the bulk. Smelled basically the same. I let it dry out a tad, loaded up my pipe, and tried it. Basically identical to the newer, drier bulk. So, that answered my question about Byzantium: it seems to have changed a bit. I'm sure the reason (assuming it has changed, and I'm not being a weirdo) is supply of blending ingredients changes over time. It's definitely close enough that I'm not gonna complain. Maybe I'll buy tins instead of bulk, because I found it to be somewhere in the middle in terms of flavor (though definitely closer to the drier bulk).
Ok, obsessive rambling about my favorite blend is over. I plan to post more about pipe smoking and some other hobbies and interests soon! Stick around! Or dont. I can't tell you what to do. I'm not your real dad.
So, ive come across a tobacco from 4Noggins called Harvest Moon. It's a blend of cube cut burley, virginias, and latakia. I know the website doesn't mention it, but there has to be a very mild topping of some sort like honey or caramel. I'm so convinced of it that I only smoke it in my aromatic pipe, a Morgan Bones Lumberman.
Whether or not it's an aromatic, that's what i'm calling it. And it's a very good one, too.
Picked up a few tins of pipe tobacco recently. Most are blends i haven't tried, and i hope I enjoy then. Even if I dont, I'll appreciate them for what they are.
Ive had Bayou Morning in plain ribbon cut before (iirc). I might have had Bayou Night before loooonnnngggg ago?
Byzantium is one I'm familiar with, but I've only had it in bulk, never tinned. The last couple or so orders of bulk have seemed different: drier and the latakia seemed more prominent. I dunno if being drier had an effect or if the blend has legitimately changed. Being different is fine. Sources change, some tobaccos become unobtainable, and whatnot. Im not sure what I'm gaining by getting a tin vs bulk (if the blend is changed, the blend in the tin will be changed, too), but it's good to experiment.
The rest is new to me. I'll get around to trying them, eventually. I've got a handful of jars and tins opened that I want to work through first
It is your responsibility as an adult to be safe to be a safe space for children. It is your responsibility to be kind and patient and helpful. I don’t care how scared you are of them, how much you hate them, or what your job is. When a child is present and needs help it is your duty to be what you wish the world was.
Being a decent person doesn’t require someone to be brave or compassionate, it requires you to be fucking decent. It is your responsibility to be the kind of person that you wish the world was full of. It is your responsibility to protect the vulnerable and be helpful. Do it awkwardly, do it scared, but fucking do it.
Smoking some Cornell and Diehl Habana Daydream tonight in my Bones churchwarden. Iirc, it was listed as "The Wizard" or something like that on the website and not called a churchwarden. But I feel like it's long enough to be called a churchwarden.
Habana Daydream is a great blend featuring cigar tobacco. It's one of my favorite blends.
Smoking some Haunted Bookshop in a Morgan Bones Liverpool.
It took me a looooong time to even consider buying a Bones. Apparently I didn't know what I was missing out on. They're good pipes at a good price. And the Haunted Bookshop is some good stuff, too
A Review of Cornell and Diehl's Byzantium
Back when I first got in to pipe smoking (summer of 2021, iirc), I started smoking with a corncob and a bag of Backwoods Red pipe tobacco. Probably like a lot of new pipe smokers, I smoked way too fast and way too hot, and I burned the hell out of my tongue. I smoked through the whole bag of Backwoods Red, getting horrible tongue bite essentially every time. Then, I tried a bag of Redwoods Blue. Blue was supposedly a mellower and smoother blend, which I assumed meant it would be easier on my tongue. It's hard to remember that far back, but I don't think switching colors helped me all that much.
During that time, I did a bit of Googling on my phone and my computer about how to negate the tongue bite problem. Surely this wasn't a common problem? Because who the hell would smoke a pipe if it caused so much damage to their mouth?! Well, searching on Google gave me the solution: obviously the Virginias and/or the burley was the problem. "Well, I guess I better start buying blends without that crap in it," I decided.
So, a bit of Googling and searching on PipesAndCigars.com provided me with a list of blends with little or none of the tobaccos I was convinced was making pipe smoking miserable. I bought a handful of 1oz samples of some bulk blends and maybe some tins (I dont remember exactly what I bought waaaayyyy back then, and I'm not searching through 4ish years of P&C order history to figure it out :D ).
One of the blends in this first order was a 1oz baggie of Cornell and Diehl's Byzantium, a blend with NO Virginia and burley. I enjoyed it enough to buy more and look for more blends like it, which I learned were blends labelled as English and Balkan blends. Since then, I've tried more blends than I can remember, but Byzantium has been at the top of the list of my favorite blends since the beginning stages of my pipe smoking journey.
Now that I've bored everyone with an overly long introduction out of the way, I guess it's time for the review. This specific review is a review of Byzantium that has been sealed away in a jar since October 4th, 2022, so it's got about 2.5ish years of age on it on the day I'm making this review. Ageing tobacco is a discussion for another post, and I'm not going to bore anyone with the pros and cons of such a thing (and pipe smokers who've been smoking for any length of time probably have their own opinions on it, anyway, so there's no need to throw my own in to the mix).
The tin (jar? :D) note is quite strong. Just getting my nose anywhere near the opened jar is met with a strong musty pruny or plummy scent. Hiding underneath is a bit of leatheriness and smokiness. It definitely smells overwhelming, but I feel like it's a much more approachable blend than you'd guess just from smelling it.
For this review, I smoked it out of a Ranz Freehand pipe that I bought recently at the Muletown Pipe Show in Columbia, Tennessee. Once lit, I get earthy, and smokey notes. A bit of sourness comes across, too. Mingling with the flavors of the latakia and orientals is the same dark fruity flavor that's prominent in the tin note, a fairly noticeable pruny kind of flavor, which I assume is the allegedly sizable dose of Perique.
A bit further in to the bowl, the Perique seems to fade to a more spicy, peppery flavor. About this point in the smoke, I feel like the flavor was more savory than the beginning? But this might just be me trying too hard for things to write down than an actual flavor phenomenon.
Byzantium, in my opinion, is a smooth and blend that's strong in flavor. With about 2.5 years of age on it, I feel like it's much mellower and smoother than it is fresh. Fresh, if my memory serves me correctly, it has a bit more harshness and is a bit rougher around the edges. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to consider if it's a blend that's new to you. If you're not a fan of it fresh, put it in a mason jar and let it hang out a bit. Try it again in a few months and then in a few more until it's gone. Maybe you'll find out you like it better once it mellows out a bit. Or maybe you wont. Either way, you've learned this is a tobacco worth keeping around or not. And if you really just hate it, send me a DM and I'll pay the shipping cost so you can send it to me :D .
I feel like there's not a lot of complexity in the flavors of Byzantium. Yeah, the flavors are strong, but you can taste them easily and know what ingredients are causing the flavors. All in all, it's a strong in flavor but smooth blend that I can't ever imagine not having in my meager tobacco cellar. If you're a fan of English or Balkan blends, it's definitely worth pitting an oz or two in your next online order (or in person order if you're fortunate enough to live near a good pipe and cigar shop)

I'm Back!
For the 0 of you that missed me since my first (and only post) about a year ago, I've finally returned from my blogging hibernation! I expected to post all the exciting stuff I wanted to get around to doing here, but I haven't done anything exciting except maybe tinker around with a new camera, if you wanna call that exciting. I hope to be more active here, but don't expect too much from me. I'll do my best to post more, but I'm not making any promises. :)
I figured I'd make my boring return by talking about a boring yet relaxing past time of mine: pipe smoking. "Why pipe smoking?" is a legitimate question, especially when there's quicker and easier ways to get a nic fix? That's a legitimate question to ask anyone that chooses to smoke a pipe in 2025.
So, why smoke a pipe? That's a question every pipe smoker will have their own personal answer for. For me, it's a form of relaxation, it's meditative, and it gives me time to think about the things I'd prefer to think about.
I work in a factory, which is a monotonous job requiring me to install the same part on a vehicle 50 or 100ish times a day (depending on which production line I end up on on any given day). It's hot inside every day of the summer -- and every other day of the year, too. And I work with people that are just stressful to be around much of the time: some are hard to deal with personality-wise, some take their job waaaaaaayyyyy too seriously, and some are just plain dumb. After 8-10 hours of working every day, it's nice to come home, sit on the porch, fill up a pipe with whatever blend I feel like smoking, and sit for the hour or so it takes to puff through a bowl.
Often, I'm not just sitting and smoking. I'll have a Coke Zero to drink and a book or tablet with me. I can read whatever book I'm working through, watch some YouTube videos, listen to Spotify, or write out the next part of a D&D campaign when I'm fortunate enough to have a group to play with (which is less and less often now that I'm becoming an old man :D ).
There's a bit of technique to smoking a pipe, which makes it much more enjoyable once you figure it out. You have to have a blend or blends you enjoy, which is its own adventure in discovering -- and the same goes for finding pipes you enjoy to smoke. But there's also an adventure in learning to fill the pipe, pack it just right so that the tobacco isn't packed too tightly or too loosely, and puffing so that you don't burn the tobacco too hot, which will burn the hell out of your tongue. Once you get the process worked out, it's a nice and relaxing bit of personal time where you can decompress before going to bed and getting up the next day to do it all over again.
Yeah, I know this isn't an exciting post, but maybe this'll get the cogs and wheels in my brain turning so that I can post more exciting stuff. Like, maybe next time I'll remember to bring my phone outside with me so I can take a picture of my pipe instead of only bringing out my tablet, which has a potato-quality camera that I don't really like to use. Also, the tablet is kinda bulky and weird, making it hard to even use the mediocre camera it does have.
