Dom’s more than happy to get himself a proper hug from his little girl. He knows there’s more going on but he’s going to be an idiot live by “ignorance is bliss”. He can pretend that conversation in the church was simply a blip. Pretend that everything’s normal and this how he was always planning to spend her bithday. None of it’s ideal — but Dom’s decided he’s going to have to make do.

"Yeah, a walk sounds good," and Dom puts a hand on Evie’s shoulder, tipping his head towards the door as he moves her shoulder along with him. Keep her close and keep a comforting grip on her because he doesn’t want to lose her and she seems all the more real when he’s got a hold on her,"Anywhere you wanna go? This place seems pretty big, lotsa shops and shit to go through."

"I don't mind." She says it with all honesty. She will go anywhere as long as she is with him. At this moment in time she's just happy that he's talking to her and being normal even though she knows things aren't right. Today is her birthday and she is going to enjoy it with her dad, she deserves that much at least. So she forgets what's troubling her for now and goes of with her dad, happy to pretend j for a little bit.

"Back at that mall," he replies. A smug smile now as she’s picking up the bits and pieces. Trying them on and he couldn’t really tell if she wasn’t overly pleased — she’s looking happy as and that’s all he needs.

He’s got this. He’s pretty sure he’s got this. Dom finishes off the Mars bar quickly. Watching as Evie sets the bag of purple goodies aside. Any worry dissapears entirely for the moment. Seeing just Evie right now. No Angel. No sadness. Just the happy little girl he loves.

"Never a problem for my girl," Dom says with a grin. Deciding right now that he could give her a hug now. He holds an arm out for her, hand waving her forwards, "but I won’t believe ya till ya give your old man a big hug. Come ‘ere.”

She knows that this isn't the conversation that they should be having, but she can't bring herself to bring up anything more serious right now. This is good, her dad is happy and so is she. She still misses Charlie and Kimi but right now it's easier, it doesn't hurt so much. When her dad asks for a hug she gives him a proper one, a real one.

After a little while she moves back and makes sure that everything is in her bag, then she turns her full attention to her dad. She's been sitting there, content to stay there for the rest of the day but now she feels the need to do something, to get out. She tilts her head and gestures to the door. "Do you want to do something? Go on a walk maybe?"

Dom nods, shoving his hands into his jeans pockets at Evie’s surprise. She’s far more amazed than he expected and the surprise itself has Dom smiling. Fleeting and far more innocent a smile than Dom seems capable of. 

"S’all right," he says as he ducks his head, thinking that right now he can see more of his babygirl in that moment of surprise. Even the thanks feels a little more natural, less like that "Angel" he was so afraid that they would’ve taken over his girl completely.

The hug’s a surprise. He doesn’t even really have time to take his hands from his pockets. One hand is out to lightly pat her back but they both quickly return to the same awkward distance between the two of them. Dom only nods. Watching Evie search through the back and waiting to see what her reaction will be. Seeing if she finds anything interesting. Instead she’s gone straight for the Mars bar and happily offering half of it too him.

Dom smiles again now. More genuine. Seeing his babygirl. The sweet little thing he’d spent almost a year searching for. Fighting through anything in his way and it seems worth it. He can pretend the Angel’s not a problem. For now. For now he’ll jsut take the Mars and take a bite.

"Thanks babygirl," and he’s warmed up, smiling,"You wanna see what else you like in there?"

Her peace offering seems to do the trick, her dad seems much happier, his smile much easier. It makes her smile more genuine too, makes her feel like she's home again. She's missed this, she's missed him. Not having him before was okay, being alone was scary but it was always that way, she knew no different. Now being without him is lonely, she doesn't feel right. She eats with him and smiles too.

She goes about investing the contents of her bag. When she finds a pretty hair clip she slides it into the front of her hair, then she does the same with some bracelets and a necklace. When she's done she is covered from head to to with purple and grinning from ear to ear. "When did you get all this?"

She sets her loot aside, keeping her purple apparel on for the time being. It's not stuff she would pick up herself, most of it she won't wear regularly but it's still the best birthday gift ever because her dad got it and thought about it even though things like birthdays aren't important anymore. The warm feeling quelles the sadness that she has been feeling for so long, it helps her to forget it for just a little while. "Thanks, dad."

Dom sets the bag down in front of Evie. That forced smile still present and he knows what he should say in response to the thanks but he can’t make himself go on with some chipper, vapid reply because he should. A father should be going on how it’s no problem. ”Anything for his babygirl.” but they’d feel like a lie. Dom’s still not entirely sure how much of his daughter is sat in front of him. How much of Evie is watching him with wide eyes and a small voice.

At least, her voice sounds normal. Normal-ish. There’s more emotion to her as well. Dom can see the obvious fear and hesitation in her. Not exactly the emotions he wanted to be stirring in Evie but fuck, it’s something better than the dead vacant look she had back in the church.

He doesn’t want this. Not at all. His jaw tenses and he gives up with a grin that shows his teeth. Closed lips with a slight tip upwards will have to do for now.

"Go on then,have a look," he says, it’s difficult to keep up any fake cheer so the words come out more like a demand. A small wave of his hand looking more forceful than he intended it to be.

"Hope you like them," he tacks on. Almost wanting to fill the awkward silence between them but at the same time wanting to stay firm. Just in case it’s not Evie there, despite that once he starts he begins to ramble slightly,"there’s a Mars bar in there. Probably should eat it soon, going outta date and all that shit. Couldn’t exactly get a cake or anything so yeah. "

She eyes the bag with curiosity, unsure of what she's supposed to do with it. She has to wait for her dad to tell her before she dares to look inside. It's all purple, little bits and bobs with Claire's labels attached to them. "You got all of this for me?" She asks like she can't believe it. Here she was thinking he wouldn't even show and he's put so much effort into making her happy, even if he is being cold with her.

"Thank you." She feels awkward to begin with but she goes with her gut and reaches out to hug him. It's not a particularly long hug but it's better than how they've been avoiding each other recently. She moves back to her bag and finds out the mars bar. She snaps it in half and unwraps it before handing half to her dad with a smile more genuine than she has been capable of for a long while. "Here."

Originally, Dom had wanted to wake Evie up early on her birthday. Hand her the sack of purple gifts he’d collected from the mall and a Mars bar he’d been saving for something special. He couldn’t exactly get her a cake so the chocolate bar would have to do.

The original plan didn’t take into account the “Angel”. Although that fucking thing wasn’t going to ruin today. He was determined it wouldn’t.

Dom had been actively avoiding Evie — though he’d never admit to it - so it’s closer to the late afternoon when he finds his girl. With bruised knuckles and his forehead purpling slightly, he probably wouldn’t be the best sight for the birthday girl anyway. Unfortunately, Evie’s not bringing him the same joy she had when he’d looked over to her mere weeks ago.

With the sack of purple crap and the mars bar chucked in amongst the tacky things from Claire’s, Dom’s walking up toward’s the young girl. Her back’s to him so Dom doesn’t bother trying to put on a happy face. Not yet, at least.

He shouldn’t be so freaked out by this. Dom knows this or at teh very he keeps telling himself that. He was already father of the fuckin’ year given the fact he’d actively avoided her and now he was having trouble smiling. It wasn’t even the sore back giving him problems. By far the worst of his bruising but with a constant stream of poison circling through his veins he doesn’t even realise it’s there. No, he’s having trouble smiling because this was never what he imagined. He never thought that after a year and a bit of searching he’d only find Evie to feel her disappear. Disappear right in front of his own fucking eyes. 

Evie must’ve noticed him and she’s looking his way now. Dom puts on a smile -  a moment too late -  as he holds out the bin bag of birthday gifts.

As far as birthdays go this one hasn't been great. For one thing most of her friends are dead, for another her father has been as absent as he was when he wasn't here at all. He had seen the worst she has to offer and decided that maybe he doesn't actually want to be her dad, maybe one day she'll wake up and he'll have left her for good. That's what she's convinced herself of at least. Angel tries to soothe her, to tell her that it won't happen and that her dad loves her but the fear runs too deep for logic to take hold.

She's better though, even if she is starting to blame herself more and more for alienating her father. She's as close to normal as she's ever been, just a sad little girl once more, although she's not so little now. She has survived another year, although she really shouldn't have. What happened to Layla and Kimi had happened to her, she'd been bit too, but she lived. It's not fair but that's how it happened and there's nothing she can do about it now. All she can try to do is make it another year, try to make it to 15.

Now it's past midday and her dad has officially not shown up she's decided not to celebrate at all. Nobody has remembered and she doesn't feel like doing anything without her dad with her, there's no point. She will have a quiet day and hopefully things will be better tomorrow. But then the sound of familiar footsteps change everything.

When she turns to see her dad she can't help how wide her eyes get. She catches a look not usually reserved for her, a cold gaze that hurts more than it has any right to, and his face, it's all bruised. It's not right, it's not her dad, but then he smiles and she can see him again. She still looks just as terrified, it's still scary to see him approach her after so long but she does her best not to panic. It leads to her saying the first stupid thing that comes to mind. "Uh... thank you."

[Waverly had been taking time to herself to reevaluate thing’s. She didn’t seem to be getting any better when it came to the disconnect in her head, but at least now she wasn’t afraid of it. The small blonde just needed to block everyone who judged her out and move on. As Waverly started to go about her daily activities she noticed a familiar face and walked over to her. Perhaps it would be the right time to socialize again. ] Hi Evie [ Waverly replied with a smile]

Hi, Waverly. [She offers the blonde the closest thing to a smile that she can manage. She is a cheap imitation of her usual cheery self but it is the best she can offer. Hopefully Waverly won't mind too much] How are you?

Good. [Jack says with a small nod, and he means it. It’s not exactly the answer he was hoping for, but he thinks it’s the best that can be expected, and Evie is resilient. Her suggestion has a grin tugging at the corners of his lips, and he doesn’t hesitate to nod in agreement.] Yeah, let’s do it. Hang on. [He dashes over to where he’d been leaving his things and trades out the rest of his chocolate for the baseball Scott had left him. For a brief moment he wonders if he and that little kid are still alive, but it’s not something he wants to dwell on right now so he just picks up his baseball bat and heads back over to Evie with a wide smile, tossing the ball lightly in her direction and then holding open the entrance to the theater.] C’mon. You ever played before?

[Evie waits for Jack, setting her chocolate next to the rest of her food and sitting quietly while he goes to grab everything. She catches the ball when it is thrown to her and heads towards the exit. She hasn't felt up to this kind of thing lately but this seems like fun. Maybe it might actually cheer her up] Only at school and stuff.

[Her question takes him a bit by surprise, and Jack hesitates for a moment before he lifts his shoulders in a light shrug.] Yeah. I’m okay. Or - I don’t know. Normal, at least. [Jack answers honestly. He isn’t sure any of them can ever really be okay again, and with Evie he doesn’t feel like he has to try and prove anything. His expression changes to one of concern as he returns the question, because he knows she’d been friends with both Kimi and Charlie.] How ‘bout you?

I'll be okay. [She is getting there, it's a slow process but she is healing. She's herself now at least, although things with her dad are strained. She's scared to talk to him and she thinks he's scared to talk to her too, which is a shame so close to her birthday. She had been looking forward to spending the day with him Thursday for the first time, they didn't have to do anything special but she wanted them to be together. Now she's not sure they'll even exchange words. That's upsetting her more than anything else right now and she's trying not to think about it] Y'know, it's pretty big here. Maybe we could play catch or something, like we said before.

[If Evie’s been acting weird, Jack hasn’t noticed, maybe because he’s avoided her a bit since her terrifying dad showed up. But even so, acting weird is expected after the two girls they’d just lost, and when she takes the chocolate with a sort of blank expression Jack just offers another small smile.] No problem. It’s probably sorta stale, but chocolate’s still chocolate, right? [He takes a small bite of his own chunk, chewing it thoughtfully for a moment before he shrugs and nods, deeming it acceptable. It’s stale, for sure, but it’s more than he’s had in ages.]

Yeah. [She nods and takes a small bite of her chocolate when he does. It is stale but it's nice. She has forgotten about her meal, now focusing on Jack instead, feeling steadily more like herself as she sits with him] You okay?

[jack-isaacs]

[Jack’s feeling about as good as he normally feels, which isn’t saying much these days but it’s something he’s gotten used to. But there’s still the added gloom of losing the girls hanging over him, and he’s reminded of it when he sees Evie looking a far cry from her normal, cheery self. Jack hesitates a moment before he makes his way over to her.] Hey, Evie. [He sticks his hands in his pockets and pauses. He’s never been good at dealing with people who are upset, but when he sees the food she’s picking at he manages a grin and pulls out the small treasure he’d found toward the back of the theatre, breaking the Hershey’s bar in half and offering her the larger of the two pieces.] Here. Happy early Halloween.

[Evie looks up at Jack with wide eyes, a little stunned to see him approach. Even her dad has been avoiding her, people have been unnerved by her recently, even when drowning in her own sadness she could tell. But she is herself again now, so she shouldn't make them so nervous. She takes the chocolate without even registering what it is until it's in her hand. She blinks in surprise and makes no move to eat it] Thank you.

[To an outside perspective it might look like Evie has been getting worse, but in reality she's been becoming more and more like herself. Angel only intervenes to make sure that she does all of the necessary things, like keeping herself tidy and ensuring that she doesn't stop eating. She is forcing her to eat at the moment, although Evie only picks at the food unenthusiastically. She has lost a bit of weight but it's barely noticable, the same goes for the dark circles just barely visable beneath her eyes. Things haven't been great but they're improving, slowly but surely things are getting better and Evie is becoming herself once more]

No more dreaming of the dead, as if death itself was undone

[Dom goes silent at the words. Tenses his jaw as he’s stuck for what to say or not to say. It’s more than little unsettling to see his babygirl refer to herself like that. Dom stands up.] I’ll be waiting at the back. Find me when you wanna head back. [Dom doesn’t wait for her to accept or decline because he knows she’ll find him. At least that’s what he hopes she’ll do. He hasn’t doubt himself over the past year or so, he sure as hell won’t start now.]

[She sighs and lets him go. Clearly this conversation is going nowhere, keeping him will just cause upset. She will stay close but avoid him as much as possible until Evie can talk to him herself. That will be best for everyone]

I make sure she eats. I look after her! [He says back quickly. Defensively. Dom still cannot - or perhaps won’t - get his head around this.] Why the hell would she want this?

Because before you Evie had to make her own family and those two girls who were ripped to shreds were the best part of it. [Her words are harsh but true. For a long time they had been the greatest thing that she had in this world. When he showed up he became the most precious thing but they were no less important, she still loved them with all of her heart. Now they are gone she is broken]

[Dom would almost laugh at the sudden change in her tone if it didn’t freak him the fuck out. Dom moves further back.] There’s more to livin’ than stuffin’ ya face and sleepin’  Angel. [He says the word with obvious disdain.] Why are you keepin’ her shut up in her own fuckin’ body?

You would rather watch your child starve? She can't afford to lose weight. [Things such as anger are beyond her but she is getting as close to that feeling as she can get. But she reminds herself that the man is scared and quick to act, it is natural for him to feel this way so she can't get too mad at him] This is what she wants and this is what is best for her.

[Dom quirks a brow at the tone, maybe he’s have said something if this was really Evie, but he has to let it slide.] Takin’ over and being all … [Dom waves a hand in her face unable to properly articulate his discomfort.] … freaky as — is helping?

Yes. [Her tone is firm and her look is sure. This is no longer the face of a young sweet girl, but that of a higher being. The more the father freaks out the further Evie gets and the more difficult it is to coax her back] I am ensuring that your child is fed and well rested. Those are important things, are they not?
