he shoves a handful of fries in his mouth as she threatens, smirking through his mouthful. evie was his sister in every way but blood, and even that seemed not worth mentioning for how close they were. so behaving like siblings came naturally and he enjoyed the role of annoying and protective big brother. “She’d like that, you know.” he spoke before he finished chewing and blushed sheepishly, his mom would not approve of his current manners but he’d never act like this in front of her…unless evie was there too. he remembered the way she used to smile when he and evie would bicker. “you wouldn’t” he pouted, lips dotted with salt as he grabbed a soda out of the fridge, offering her one.
the reason was unexpected, or at least more sentimental than he had expected. “aww, han — you love me.” he snickered as he pulled her into an involuntary bear hug. they didn’t spend as much time together as they used to but that seemed inevitable. they were adults now and even without military deployments and pop world tours the same would have happened. they weren’t street rats anymore but he knew in his heart they were still those kids when they were together like this. he released her and went back to eating. he laughed at her dismissal of the fortune and subsequent mauling of the cookie.
though he continues to eat she wanders toward the instruments, drawn to them like a moth to a flame. it was this exact reason he had them, because she was more herself when there was music, or the possibility for it. “I’ll keep it tuned as soon as you write a song about me.” he joked. “nah, i have no idea how to do it right, figured i’d leave it for the professional to caress back into tune.”
“i know she would,” she hums, grabbing her food from the bag, fully prepared to devour it. “i talk to her every week and have since i stopped going to your house so much. in all honesty,” she says, already knowing how it’ll turn out, “i’m pretty sure i like your mom more than i like you.” that alone was bullshit, she only liked one person in the world more than kai and that was her own mother. she isn’t even able to keep a straight face as she says it, hiding the smile behind the soda kai got for her. “try me.”
she groans at the hug without minding it too much at all. it isn’t a torture, hugging kai, but she’s unable to resist rolling her eyes at the sound of her name - her real name. kai was one of the few people with express permission to call her that, but it didn’t mean she liked it. the name sounds foreign now, she’d been evie so long, that it doesn’t quite fit her right anymore. “not anymore, i don’t,” she grumbles, overdramatic just for fun.
with a teasing grin thrown over her shoulder, evie tunes the guitar by ear. “who says i haven’t already?” it’s not well known that she had songs for everyone in her life but people speculate, as they always do. once the guitar is back up to speed, she sighs. “its really not that hard, kai, but it’s fine. more excuse for me to come over and make sure you’re treating it right.” she started strumming idly, letting her fingers take the lead.
