He’s back.

Uh… hi there.

It’s been several years since I’ve been truly active on this platform, and I’ve gotten wrapped up in reading old interactions. I forgot I was a bit of a writer back then.

My name is Jay, and I was (I suppose still am) the creator of Mortimer. At a time where I was at my lowest, needed a sense of community, needed support, you all were here. You supported me. I thank you for that.

An update to my story, the creator’s story: I now work full-time as a piano technician- building, fixing, and tuning pianos for the entertainment industry and private clients. Who would’ve known that my love for pianos written throughout this story of Mort would come to fruition in my real life. I’ve even had the pleasure of restoring a beautiful black piano in the center of a ballroom. Mortimer would be ecstatic.

I may come back here. I miss writing; I miss the people I met here. I haven’t really been the biggest fan of Rick and Morty for a while, but this really has a life of its own.

Mortimer, for better or for worse, mirrors me. Creating all that I did for him really built myself up in a time where I was so below the ground. It’s crazy to think about.

That all to say- I hope to come back here. And for now; it’s been nostalgic. Cheers.

“I gotta get out of here... gotta find a place to hide.”

Panting. Sweating. Footsteps, fast-paced ones.

He looks as if he hasn’t seen a lick of sleep in years, eyes darting from side to side in terror. They’re closing in, he can feel it. Couldn’t he ever get a break???

He starts to sway, coughing as he sprints in one direction, any direction away from them. As long as it’s away from them.

“Please, I’ve given you all I have. There isn’t anything I have left. Please.”

He doesn’t look back. Can’t look back. If he does...

He’s done for.

“Summer... I need help... please.”

Summer hears his voice and her shoulders instantly become tense beneath her thick coat. The past few interactions they’d had were cordial, but unpleasant to say the least.

But the tone of his voice makes her turn around quickly, and his words make her brow knit together in concern.

“Mortimer? What is it?” She takes a few slow steps towards him. Summer’s thinner than she was the last time he saw her, leaner somehow.

He walks slowly out of his portal, pressing his hands to his side. His cheeks are sunken in and his eyes are cloudy and far off, hair sweeping over his forehead and eyes. He winces with every movement. His eyes dart around to scan the area, and they solumnly land on Summer.

“Something’s wrong with me. I-I took a blow to the side and it feels like it’s exploding; I didn’t know who else to go to…”

His eyes start to well up from pain, having to take a knee. He grasps his lower-right side harder.

Summer reaches out and catches him gently by the arm as he falls, lowering him slowly. Her eyes are wide with concern and fear, but she looks like she’s evaluating him too—a perfectly honed balance of emotion and dispassionate logistics. 

“All right,” she finally says in her cool, calm voice, though her eyes are wild with activity and thought. “You’re going to be all right.” Summer offers him a hand. “Can you come with me?”

She knows it’s a tough question for someone who barely trusts her, but he knows she can help.

He looks at her with distrusting eyes, but what other choice did he have? He reluctantly takes her hand, the other arm pressed firmly to his side. His breathing is shallow, sporadic; panic is starting to become visible on his face. His voice comes out guarded and clipped, yet weak.

“Just make this quick, I can’t stay in one place too long, you know that...”

Mortimer wonders how much of the recent events between the two she remembers, and he winces in hindsight. Their recent interactions hadn’t been pretty- not even civil.

His hand across his abdomen subconsciously loops into his front pocket where he kept his portal gun.

Just in case he needed to flee.

Are you hurt?

His face becomes stone, turning his head away. “Not at all.”

“Summer... I need help... please.”

Where’ve you been?

His eyes immediately shift to his surroundings, a look of panic ghosting his features. That look is soon taken over by pain, his eyes squeezing shut and his head shaking to clear the fog in his brain.

“I can’t talk about it right now.”

What a beautiful house. Do you live there?

He sighs lightly, the bags under his eyes prominent. His hand keeps squeezing his right side as he winces.

“Sorta. Haven’t been there in a while, but yeah. I’m borrowing it at the moment.”

12 - What’s the best memory of your father?

Mortimer looks at the sky deep in thought, resting his weight on one leg and crossing his arms. He coughs. “There’s not much I like to remember about my dad, but… he did care for us, in his own weird way. I remember he used to sneak me twinkies because my mom hated us kids being too hyper. Good times…”

“If I did obtain any physical features from my father, it would be my brown hair. Anything else in regards to “features” I pretend doesn’t exist. Next question?”
