this was my first time being a vendor at an art market! terrifying experience tbh, but very fun :D

art market rambles

My friend's college hosted an art market a few months back. Since it was mainly geared for college students to be vendors, each 10x10 space only cost $25 which I thought was a pretty good deal.

I had a few months to prepare for it, but a mix of co-leading a conference, work stuff, and my differential equations class specifically made me procrastinate getting ready for a while. Not my brightest moment, but we live and we learn I guess.

these prints arrived in the mail like five days before the art market

I think I had two midterms the same week of that art market so I was WAY behind in preparations. And the friend who I was supposed to share a vendor space with bailed last minute, so I was really panicking. Shout out to my sister who begrudgingly drove my annoying ass around the next city over at 7am to get everything set up.

And shout out to my other friend (@massivelynerdymint!!!) who asked to share a vendor space with me last minute and let me use their vendor displays! They were way more experienced in doing art markets than me, so they did strategic art market moves like yanking me out of the corner of our booth because I felt awkward and was about to bolt.

Turns out people looking at your art in real life is a very different feeling than people looking at your art online! Go figure!

Because you're there, y'know? You can't just exit the tab or pace around a bit. You gotta be there and look at people looking at your art. And with a lot of people there being ACTUAL vendors with cool set-ups, I felt way out of place lmaoooo

In all honesty I didn't expect to make much since I joined mostly just for the experience. But the first ten minutes go by and my initial goal of "I just want to break even" shifted to "Okay maybe let's just try to make a single sale lol hah...ha..."

Anyways it look a while to get used to lol, but I think I was getting the hang of saying "Hello! Anything catch your eye?" if someone lingered near my section.

My first sale was a lady who looked over my prints and responded to that question with "Your art style.." So that's gonna be a core memory for the next eighty or so years. (She ended up getting a Vincent print :))

And throughout the art market, there were a few people interested in how I made the prints. So I ended up going on spiels about trying to imitate oil paintings and which particular oil painter I had been studying and how I tried to include their style and it was really fun to get to explain all that and have someone listen to me yap lol

I also ended up making a few art trades! Got some beautiful photography as well as a demon character print. And I bought a gorgeous print of an underwater scene with peak composition.

Overall, it was a really fun experience. I got to vibe with some friends and learn how art markets work. I also broke even!

And the feeling of someone buying some of your art when there were ~150 other vendors is unmatched. Like out of everyone here, you want to spend your money here???

line art is hard lol. tried a bit to make it look weighted (?) but it's very much still sketchy

proud of how the helmet came out though. i meant to keep the shading mostly soft, but i couldn't help but add just a few brush strokes to carve out the lighting.

anyways this took forever so don't expect it often lol

off topic but i'm taking an art history class for the writing intensive credit, and it's been SO MUCH FUN SO FAR. the temptation to leave my betrothed (chemE) and elope with my childhood best friend (visual arts) haunts me everyday. old art is so much fun to look at. highly recommend. go look at old art. do it. do it.

had an art hangout with friends after being really busy for a while. never been the best at watercolor, especially for portraits but i wanted to try it out a bit more.

i think i like how these two came out :D

Finally FINALLY drew a pretty version of my Avior and Corvus what do we think gang :33c

I like to imagine that all demons have their constellation on their face, and even tho they can hide it most choose to leave it visible. Also Corvus gave himself extra freckles because he felt unbalance with his constellation only being on one eye- plus humans usually have them all over and he wants to fit in

@moronkyne's redacted art challenge once again. i just really liked the idea of making porter's skin gray like a corpse.

doodled some thumbnails since i wanted to focus more on color composition and shapes.

my porter design usually has long hair but i liked the look of uneven short hair which would help frame the face in a stark white. also tried to keep the hair rendering to a minimum for that same reason.

if you think you've deepen the shadows enough, no, no you have not. there is no end. no escape. only shadows you haven't deepened. swallow them whole.

was originally gonna go no shirt and more gold until i saw that cool outfit. debated a bit on how transparent to make the shirt.

he kinda ended up looking like an old scholar lol. and a bit younger than i originally intended.

never finished my last drawing of the cam series back in march and i don't think i will, so this is to make up for that.
