my name is evory and i'm a chemical engineering major who dabbles in legislative advocacy
this blog is here to be a fun way to help me stay on top of things. so a lot of studying, professional development, and general chores. all the chill vibes
always open to study buddies :D
i also do art stuff sometimes on my main blog @evorycromnom
but expect a lot more casual happenings from this one
Haven't been as productive as I want to be, so perhaps being sick is the punishment. Anyways, guess who has one bang energy drink and a desperate need to do well in all of these classes?
I'm gonna give you the game plan just in case I crash really bad from it:
Now - 6pm: Finish up Research Paper. I'm like 75% done with it, but I also need to find more sources and quotes which is going to take up a good bit of time. I'll find time to circle back to it if need be.
7pm - 12am: Work on the Take-Home Midterm. My differential equations professor is really chill and I can ask him questions about the exam if I can get a good amount of it done tonight. I really need to perfect this exam, so I gotta lock in for this.
1am - 4am: Study for physics. I'm almost done reviewing chapter 25, so all I need to go is go over chapter 26 and 27 a bajillion times, especially chapter 26.
Then work at 8am so leave for the bus at 7:20.
After my exam at 5:30pm, I'll submit my research paper before midnight, then continue working on the midterm.
If I can get through that, I'll mostly be set. Then go to student gov/delegate elections since I'm trying to pass off my delegate role for next year. And I can get home by 5:30ish, then I need to start working on my commission sheet because I'm a vendor at an art market next weekend.
And then I'll find some time to squeeze in doing the weekly assignments for each class.
Does this sound like an okay plan? I'm not gonna get a full night of sleep for like two days lol
It should be fineeee
Anyways I should get back to work. If you don't hear from me for like a week, it's def because I got 100s on everything and am celebrating. Remember me fondly.
Well well well, I'm back and I got all my results back for the hot mess of those few days. Still a bit sick, but getting through it.
More more!
Firstly, the research paper
Not bad at all I think! Apparently I was only marked off for the footnotes not being exactly as my professor wanted it. I'm more than fine with a 98 on a paper I finished very very last minute.
I was only kinda worried for this paper since I needed to add a few more sources to the final draft and I kinda just put stuff down in the document and hoped it made sense.
Next, physics exam.
Honestly might be one of my worst exam scores in my two years of college so far. Each question was 10-20 points and I unfortunately got a 20-point question wrong.
It was a question on finding the capacitance of a sphere inside a conducting ring I believe, and I used the formula for parallel-plate capacitance instead of deriving the spherical capacitance formula using C=Q/V and substituting the change of voltage for the electric field formula.
But ALSO the spherical capacitance formula was ALREADY on the newer formula sheet the professor gives out, but we're not expected to use that one because it's usually for the exam after this one. And I just kept my formula sheet because I had written notes on that. So I'm a bit salty about that, but eh not much to do about it.
Also it knocked my grade down from 111 to a 105 so I realllyy can't complain lol
I think out of all my classes, I'm pretty alright with this one getting the lowest score from my mix of being sick, having work, prepping for the art market, prepping for elections, the whole shebang.
AND FINALLY (not really) the dreaded differentials take-home exam!
I'm really really happy about this. I realized last minute that I accidentally used Laplace transform on a question that I think wasn't asking for it?? They just used the notation of L[y(x)] which tripped me up. But I don't completely know what I got wrong since my professor hasn't passed the graded exams back yet.
Anyways, I was just hoping and praying for an 80 since that would mean all I had to do was flawless the rest of the quarter to keep my A. Not the best scenario, but still do-able. I've been in that place before, y'know?
This plus my professor finally graded some other stuff (really gets me nervous when he doesn't grade some things and they're left in canvas as zeroes) and my grade went from an 87.87 to a 95.64!!!
So right now I'm working on the last take-home midterm due on Monday and then we have an oral final where he picks three random questions from a packet we're given and we have to explain how to solve it.
I'm not ready at all, but we get through it, y'know?
Extra extra! Art market???
I didn't take many pictures of my booth, so these two are the best I got, sorry lol. I'll probably elaborate more on how this went on my main art account, but generally I think it went pretty good! My old booth partner dipped on me last minute and he was supposed to bring the canopy weights, which stressed me out pretty badly but I got it figured out. My new booth partner was awesome and I love them and I'm going to show my gratitude by drawing their cat.
Overall, I'm so glad I survived that week. Just gotta survive finals now and I have so many plans for the summer! A lot of studying and a lot of making art in the near future :D

Things got really busy for a while and I crashed out hard, but I live.
Anyways, differential equations has been fun. Back when I started studying in the tutoring for precalculus, I used to be curious as to why all the STEM students seemed to just live there. One of them would venture out to get everyone food and they'd all study together for hours. I get it now. After one particularly confusing lecture, a good fifth of my class went straight to the tutoring center and worked together for three hours. Good bonding experience.
At least physics is going well. Love my physics professor. Told him about a predicament I was having with my lab group in which no one else would help with the lab report until two hours before it was due and he was so chill about it.
Me: "It's just- they don't put anything in the document I made until the next Thursday, and- the quality of the work isn't... as- uh...."
Prof: "So what I'm hearing is that they do the work last minute, and it's lame-o."
Best professor I've had.
More rambles belowwww
History of Western Art: Baroque
Passage from JJ Winckelmann about Apollo of Belvedere:
Love this so much. I thought reading about someone talking about art would be boring, but I really love how much this guy felt about this one sculpture. Went on about it for at least 3 pages. Hearing the passion in people's words makes the world worth living in I think.
Also, I heard some stuff about the professor not being the best which I didn't really realize until I looked at the mean. I haven't had too much trouble with her yet aside from the lack of study materials she gives us, but I'm hoping I can get through this class without any problems
High School Prom (as a Dual Enrollment Student)
I'm probably going to make another post going into this a bit more, but I attended my high school prom ✨for the experience✨ and it was really weird. It felt like I stepped back in time and everyone's the same as when I left two years ago, and the only thing that's different is that I hate myself less?? It's so wild.
But other than that for now, it was pretty lame. Stood in line waiting to get in for an hour and recognized NOBODY. Who's trying to be prom king or queen?? Who are these people?? I thought I would have some idea since they're in my batch, but idk.
Also side note, but I stood in line in one of my queerest outfits and all the other guys showed up in the traditional prom suits and I felt wayyy out of place. I got so comfortable with my college being a queer-friendly place that maybe I should've toned it down a bit
Forgot to update for yesterday, so I added the assignments for that day here. Been a good bit busy with work and all that, but I did manage to get a few small assignments done so far.
Had to skip my differential equations class to go to an appointment which isn't ideal, but the professor posts a lot of the material online, so I'm not too worried.
Unfortunately wasn't able to get much done today as I had to figure out a time to donate blood (surplus of red blood cells over here) and fix stuff with my ID.
I'm probably going to stay up a bit later to get more things done. Unfortunately, I have a late night lecture + labs tomorrow, and then another early class and quiz on Friday, so I may or may not be cooked. We'll see.
I really should binge those toxic study motivation videos more. Sometimes I find myself just wanting to toss everything aside to draw or paint or somehow find the money to make marble sculptures.
psst. not exactly study related, but wanna see a drawing i'm still working on?
I think it's looking pretty nifty so far :)
Was gonna wait to post it on my main, but it's going to be a while until I have the time to actually work on it some more.
First day of spring quarter! Unfortunately did not get a lot of assignments done, nor a lot of my spring break goals, so we're not starting the quarter on too good a note.
But work went pretty alright today. No big disasters other than the higher-up that was supposed to order some things just. not doing that. No shade to her though, she's been busy busy. Hopefully I'll be done with my student organization brochure by tomorrow so I can start handing it out. I already sent the draft to my other officers and I'm looking for the go-ahead to send it to everyone else.
On another note, my art history class is looking a tad bit wild though. 2 discussion posts, 2 analysis assignments, and 2 quizzes all due Saturday. Bro it is the first week, can we chill?? I know it probably doesn't sound that bad, but it's an online class and I kinda took it so I'd be less busy stuck in classes all the time. Backfired a bit I guess lol
My classes for this quarter btw:
History of Western Art: Baroque
Elements of Differential Equations
Engineering Physics II: Electricity & Magnetism
one of these things is not like the others lol
Ran into someone from my high school on campus. Torn between inviting them into campus organizations and just not interacting with them at all. There's a reason I left hs two years early lol, people there weren't the best.
Eh, I'll invite them. College is a place for change after all.
ALSO LOOK AT ALL THE STUFF I GOTTA DO THIS WEEK
I'm being dramatic. A lot of them are just introduction things lol
But still.
Also you can tell I have the same physics professor from last quarter because of how many emojis he puts in the titles of his assignments lol
Oh yeah, I finished* setting up my Notion workspace for this quarter. Unfortunately, only my differential equations class has all the assignments for the quarter listed, meaning that I'll have to add more assignments throughout the quarter, but it's mostly fine.
This usually takes up to 20ish minutes to do, but it does really help me in the long run, so I don't mind settling down and taking the time to copy paste everything in.
Hi hello! I'm back. I stopped posting daily for a bit since the conferences I were in had pretty long days and I wasn't really doing anything productive outside of them.
If I'm being completely honest, I'm kinda exhausted lol. The back-to-back conferences were a lot and I got sick at the end of the second conference which really derailed my plans.
Still had to go to work when I got back though since I'm the chair and I knew we would not be able to start the quarter on the right track if I wasn't able to oversee everything. And apparently gas prices are too high now, so I was told by my mother to take the bus then walk home in the rain. Not the best thing for a sniffly gross pile of flesh.
And even today when I wanted to just do chores and get stuff for my student association done, I had to redo a good bit of my coworker's work because the format was a bit hard to understand.
I'm kinda a mess, but right now I just need to get enough done to survive Monday and Tuesday since my next big chunk of free time is Wednesday. Hopefully I'll be able to get the brochure done by then and then sent out to all the member campuses across the state by our meeting on Friday.
Not the best way to start a quarter, but I'll get through it!
Unfortunately did not get that 111/100 nor the highest score on that test. I wish a nice crisp glass of pineapple soda to whoever did though.
BUT. Apparently that score of 111 doesn't belong to my rival as he told me he got a 102.
So. On paper we both got our asses handed to us by some unknown third party, but technicallyyy in our unofficial-but-kinda-official competition, I won right?
Went to the capitol today and talked to one of my senator's staff members. It was a good bit nerve-racking since I couldn't read how they felt about the issues we presented until right at the end where they shared the senator's current priorities and what they thought might not pass.
Also my first time in a rally! Voice is kinda shot, but it was fun! God I think I love chants now lmaooo. Got me all fired up! Y'all I'm so ready to start a rally of my own next legislative session.
And in between events, I got some work done on my Japanese curriculum. I decided that I don't want to treat it like a real class, but more so a hobby I am strict on doing every day.
Here's a bit of what I have so far. So there are subjects with various lessons in them. I referenced some actual Japanese class topics for those. Then, referencing my Japanese class, I just came up with some activities that would be fun to do while trying to learn in specific subjects.
In terms of structure, I think to keep myself engaged, I might just allow myself to pick whatever subject I want for the week or so.
Journaling for the day. Highlighting new words/words I barely remember so I can go back to them later.
Not my best ending with calc III, but I think everything else went well. Didn't expect over a hundred in physics, especially with how rough the quarter started. I think I got blessed with pretty good professors this time around.
🖥️ Computer Science
7/10 class. Lectures were longer than they needed to be, so I ended up doing student org work during that class. Projects were fun though. Professor was an easy grader. A tad bit boring, accentuated by the length, though getting into functions the latter half of the quarter was interesting. One partner project at the end of the class which was fine I suppose.
📯 Calculus III
Didn't know what the hell was going on half the time lmaoo. Professor was a bit all over the place too. Love him though, kept it real. We had three exams in this class. I did okay-ish on the first exam with a 94, then got 100 on the second exam, then bombed the last exam with a 82. That week after the final I was like 'No way this is what finally fucks up my GPA', so I'm really relieved about this score lmaooo
⚛️ Engineering Physics I
Loved this class! One of my favorite classes I've taken so far, rivaling only my American Literature class where I got to write about Whitman's Leaves of Grass. I've never been a fan of applying math in the real world, but I also hadn't realized how cool it would be. Like we're all aware of how the world will work (ie cannonball moves in a parabola), but being able to relate math to it was so fun. The professor was also so chill. Loved the vibe he brought to late night classes and (later night) labs.
More! More!
🏃🏻 The Hustle & Bustle
I was a bit more busy this quarter than in fall, think! I got involved with my campus' honor society, organized people for the legislative session, began giving reports at the student senate meetings, prepped for the DC trip, and was promoted to chair of my team at work.
❓ What to Change
Next quarter, I want to organize my notes a bit more, since I've been putting off paying for the Goodnotes upgrade even though it's like $12 a year.
I also want to get a binder if any of my classes have paper notes. I usually use my iPad to take notes, so the paper handouts I got just piled up in my folder.
Also! I need to work in break-days for finals. Studying for days on end with only a few hours as a break was rough. I was tired every morning, but still had to get up. I was tired every night but still had to study. I viewed every moment I wasn't studying or working as a waste of time which was a terrible mindset I think. I burned out fast, and I can't let that happen again.
🎒 Closing Statements
Overall a good quarter, academic-wise. I was a bit worried about the Calculus III + Engineering Physics I matchup, so I'm glad I got through it. It still sucked as a early morning class + late night class though. Fuckkkk. But it's fine, I got through it.
More conference! If I'm being honest, I originally wasn't a fan of chants. I know they're important, but I kinda thought they were a bit cheesy. This one changed my mind though. Definitely going to use it's call-and-response for the rallies I'm planning to do.
We planned a good bit of lobbying today. I need to write up my testimonial for the meeting with my senator's staff. I'll be talking about the SAVE Act and why it kinda really sucks, aiming to address a problem that doesn't exist. It's a direct attack on young voters and it needs to die. Funnily enough (not very funny but whatever), it's currently being debated and will most likely continue to be debated when I get to the capitol. Go talk to your senators y'all, especially those of you who think your legislators might vote for it to pass.
Moving on for now! There was a gala and I sorely mistook the dress code. Moments before disaster pic up there. People said it looked nice, but I felt like the lone queer guy who walked into the wrong convention. Please don't look too close lol
And I woke up a bit late so didn't get time to journal unfortunately, but tomorrow the last day of my first conference of the trip, so hopefully I'll have time on the train to actually study and get student org things down
I don't believe I've been on a train before, so I'm very excited.
For lobbying, I'm not too worried about it since my senator seems to be very open about supporting our causes. I'm more so worried about some other states.
Personally, I feel like the most important day of lobbying I did was when I spoke to a district senator that directly opposed what I was fighting for. I will always resent myself for not pushing further, as I feel like I'm too used to agreeing with people.
I need to get myself together. It never feels like there's enough people willing to do this with me, like I could be calling out the first part of that chant in a pitch black room waiting for the response, not knowing if it'll ever come.
Conference again. A bit of a long day, but we got let out early and had dinner with another student organization. Then we walked around the city for a good bit. And while the advisors took a taxi back, me and a friend rented one of those bikes that are just placed around and took that back. I have never been on the back of an electric bike and it was terrifying, especially when we rode in the bike lane.
Did some Japanese practice, though not a lot of studying. I'll have to go back to consuming more vocabs soon.
Also! One of the workshops at the conference was very motivating, so I made a new notes document and excel sheet to track attendance for my student org to see who we need to contact to send a representative. There's a lot of ways I want to improve what we have, and I only have so much time.
Goals for tomorrow:
Light Japanese studying (adjectives & sentence structure)
Finish student organization meeting notes
Talk to the marketing contact to help create a poster
Get started on the student organization brochure
Send an email to the other state's student organization
Find my headphones :''(((((
More Japanese journaling with awful grammar and the like. It's been really fun though.
I've also been thinking about my student org a bit more. There's so much I need to do before the year ends. I need people to continue to fight for change even when I'm gone. I need assurance that they'll keep trying to bring back funding for my program. Because it'll be a warm day in hell for my legislature if my baby brother doesn't get to have the same opportunities I've had with my tuition-paying program.
Planting the tree so someone else can rest in the shade and all that.
Since I am on the governing council, I got to go to a lovely 2 hour meeting that turned into a 3 hour discussion. Was dumb and forgot to bring my laptop, so I'll have to consolidate my paper notes for next meeting. I think it was the most productive meeting we've had. Props to the guy next to me who just motioned to temporarily suspend a portion of Robert's Rules for that meeting since it was honestly just weighing us down.
I usually don't like talking in those meetings until I have a full solution for whatever problem we're facing, but I really need to get over that if I want people to at least consider a solution.
Anyways, this morning I woke up kinda late. Tried to get some journaling in Japanese done for that morning, but I got distracted on trying to fix my mistakes from what I wrote on the plane yesterday since I couldn't open any dictionary.
If you know Japanese, feel free to laugh or give advice if you'd be so kind. My handwriting and grammar are probably atrocious lmao. I was trying to see how much I remembered from when I was actively studying, so it probably reads like a caveman grunting out words without a semblance of coherent sentence structures.
Also taxied to Union Station and walked around. My picture on the right is kinda bad, but that is a Fox News building. That realization was like a jolt to the stomach lol. Like if I walked in there, it'd be bad news bears. Never had a place like that back home that would be so against my existence. Interesting experience.
And I networked quite a bit today!! Usually I kick myself after conferences for not networking enough, so I tried to do better this time around.
Actually got to sit down for a one-to-one chat with one student leader to talk about delegations and how to bring campuses to the nationwide org by bringing action from the org to the campuses.
I also introduced myself to an advisor from another state's student org which is very similar to mine! I'm hoping they can get me in contact with the leadership team of the org themselves so we can talk about our experiences and how we can help each other.
Tomorrow, my goal is to talk with some campuses that aren't a member of the big nationwide organization and ask what they would want from it.
Spring break is two weeks long for us this year! Unfortunately, I'll be at conferences for a whole week of that and at work for two more days. I'm glad I get to go, but a long break would've been nice lol
BUT! I won't let that stop me from getting things done this break.
Goals:
Read ahead for my spring quarter engineering physics class
Make some notes for my differential equations class next quarter
Make the brochure for my student organization so campuses can share it with their students
Talk with the rest of the student organization's leadership team to have a poster for the org made and distributed on campuses around the state by the start of next quarter
Draft the itinerary for the workshops I plan to do for the student organization
Get at least five digital drawings finished and ready for the art market I applied to vendor at
Get back into learning Japanese & make my own curriculum for spring quarter
Flew out to DC! No overlays which was nice. Basically spent half the day traveling and then ate dinner (lunch?) before attending a mixer with other students from various organizations and states. It would be pretty cool if not the most awkwardest thing I've ever tried to do. Like I just stood there for a good amount of time, not knowing too many people, not wanting to butt into other conversations. It was a strange experience.
Also got some exam scores back and it's alright news! I'll share them out when all my quarter grades are finalized.
While on the plane, I tried to do some journaling in Japanese just to practice and ah. I've forgotten so many words. I can't wait to officially integrate Japanese back into my schedule next quarter. Hold me accountable so I stick to it!
That's pretty much it today. Kinda tired. Misplaced my headphones which is not the best thing to happen day one. Hopefully I find it because my sister would whoop my ass if I don't, and also going a whole week without being able to curl up in a corner and de-stress sounds like hell.
Kinda did terrible on the calculus final ngl. Since it was an asynchronous online exam, I got a bit nervous and wanted to get it over with, so I cut my studying short to just take it early. Not my finest moment, so I'll note it for the future. I should have ten or so extra credit points that'll be added to the exam, so hopefully that can carry my grade.
Not the best note to end the quarter with, so I wallowed a bit before getting ready for my flight.
Really upset over that exam. 100% my fault though. I spent more time studying for physics on the excuse that it was a harder class, when really I just found the content more fun and I liked the challenge of competing with that other guy in my class.
My calc grade with that final (before the professor goes in to manually look over the exam) is currently sitting at a 90, which isn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but I also really don't want this to be the class I lose my 4.0, and just because I was frivolous with how to delegate my study time.
