Reflection

Twelve weeks of class ended. The first workshop of the university is a little nervous, because many students from different countries often communicate inconvenient, I often do not understand what the teacher said, so very nervous, very afraid to keep up with the content of the teacher, but the classmates are very friendly, whether it is Chinese classmate or not. Everyone from the different countries helped me to explain what the teacher said and what we asked to do to keep pace with me. Happily, after weeks of workshops, I gradually communicate with each other and know what the teacher is talking about. This course teaches me the most and the most important is team spirit. When we do typeface, everyone has different idea and finally we do the best one together. I remember the first exhibition, and our group made an automatic exhibition and put it on the glass door. I felt very interesting. The ideas of the students were very good. At the end of this semester I also learned how to do a simple zine, although my last zine is a simple style, not very interesting, but I like it. Finally, thank you for Andy and Karen. See you next semester.

Rationale and Reflection

Before starting my Ask Me Anything project, I never thought that I could interview some famous people someday. I was so worried that I would not receive any reply when Andy told us we should send an e-mail to all the five person we wrote down on the paper. But surprisingly, I soon received the first reply from my list and also he is my first artist on the list.

ZHONG XIA YOU is famous Chinese humanity and art blogger with one hundred thousand followers on Sina Weibo (Chinese version of Instagram). Her artworks have been noted for its stylized cinematic quality. The reason why I chose her as my interviewee is that I can see the great sorrow in her paintings, although most of them are about the relationships between human and universe. In addition, I just started painting on my laptop and I found that it is difficult for a beginner to actually create something. Hence, by doing this interview, I was hoping to have a deep understanding of her artworks and in the meantime to learn some skills that could be helpful for people who want to start painting.

When it comes to the layout work. I decided to use the square as the shape of the book because I wanted the publication to look more like an art book. Besides, My interviewer’s works are also suitable for presenting in squares.

I also used simple lines to visualize the content of the text. By combining minimalism with my understanding of his works, I have created works to explore the relationship between people and universe. Everyone is like a lonesome planet in the infinite universe, lonely but so full of splender.

The biggest problem I encountered is that I don’t know how which way to bind the book.At first I wanted to made it into a form of turning pages ( a handy book with page number and index. But after I print out my prototype. I found that the paper I choose is to hard( 350gsm ) and made it almost impossible to fold. ( I tried to fold but the edge will get nasty). All my art works and layout were done in Illustrator (because I completely know nothing about Indesign) and it gets a little bit tricky when I decided to change them. So l came up with the ideal of using rings to bine the pages and it look really polished when l finally combine them.

I have to say it feels really good when i got the final version. My interviewee posted it online and received a lot of positive comments. l started from noting to a polished small publication. It is hard but ,still, worth it.

Good zine!!!🤪

This is my first exposure to communication design, compared with other subjects; this subject has given me a lot of hands-on opportunities. Many of these twelve weeks are about typefaces, use water, paper, ribbon, clay, and personal belongings to make up the typeface. The first topic is about designing questions. My question is "where can you find inspiration". I used branches and other plant models to make up it. The reason why I used plant models to make up is because I wanted to answer questions from the questions, find answers from nature, and plants represent nature. This subject is about interview designers five questions, I choose to ask my Chinese design teacher - Ansen Cai. My five questions are "Where does your inspiration come from?" "For designers, what can be compromised and what can't be compromised?" "In the future, how to choose, what should we do?" "How to improve your design ability?" "What do you think of the design?" I am very grateful that she can answer my question in her busy schedule. Under her authorization, she gave me her first design work and some of her usual paintings, which made me, use zine. I use the minimalist style to complete the zine. The main colors are blue, black and white, using simple geometric shapes as background. What I hope to highlight is the interview questions and answers. At the end of the homework, through the 12 weeks of workshop, compared to the learned InDesign, collage, layout, and so on, I felt that the team work was ultimately the spirit of teamwork, and I liked the team to work together to accomplish a task, the different ideas and the feeling of mutual cooperation. I hope I can study harder and get more promotion next semester.

Patrick Watson / Love songs for Robots

A lil throwback to when we were discussing the ballet of the avant-garde in our lectures, i came across Patrick Watsons music video of Love Songs for Robots. Watson was my extremely hard to reach artist for the Interview task and if you havent heard is music, maybe give it a listen! He has a very unique soft voice. If you love Partick Watson we can immediately be best friends

SYNOPSIS

Love Songs For Robots is our attempt to create the sort of film Martians might make for humans, if those Martians had only observed us from afar. The piece is inspired by the sculpture and ballet of the avant-garde artist Oskar Schlemmer, with choreography and dance by Mistaya Hemingway (La La La Human Steps).

Good idea for the letter

In this lecture, l am very interested in the eyewriter. Eyewriter is a low - cost eye tracker. Originally designed for the crippled graffiti artist TEMPT，the eyewriter system uses inexpensive cameras and open-source computer vision software to track the wearer's eye movements. I think it's a good invention in the word. In the tutorial, Andy and Karen taught us how to use the Indesign to make the zine.

This week Andy and Karen brought some material to do the model of zine. There are lots of good zine from my classmate, my zine is very easy and boring, after this class l will improve my zine.

This week's workshop is very interesting. We created the collage from "A-Z", Steve and l made the small book like last class. It given me some inspirations to do the zine. I really like the collage "E". The graceful lines of the two models make up the“E”, l think it's abstract, but not really.

In this week's workshop, we learned how to make the easy book. Fold one time, mark the number of pages, fold again, put together the paper of the companion, then the number of pages, repeat, and finally cut a edge with the scissors, and after a discount, a simple book is completed. I don't know how many times a piece of paper can be folded, but I know it's hard to break it again and again, but is it an interesting thing?

In week six work shop. We did the typeface, from A to Z. The first time our group used the green squares. In the beginning, I envy the corner table with a circular piece of paper, because circular piece of paper can make up the square, but the squares can not make up the circular. It is different to do the typeface. However, my companions are very clever, they do the abstract typeface, it a simple style. The question about that is the letter sometimes is difficult to know what is it. Fortunately, the second time we can use the yellow rectangle to add the first square letter. It easier to know the letter than first time. The green is cold color, the yellow is the warm color, and it looks very nice with it. Finally, we use the red rectangle to do the final work. I like our group's work, look forward to the next good cooperation.

In week 6, the morning lecture about the evolution of the words. I am very interested about kaomoji. 顔(kao)=face, 文字(moji)=character(s)). Sometimes, people used it on online chat. There are some easy kaomoji which l always use. :-) smile :-( unhappy :-D happy :-O surprise ♂（￣▽￣）/ nice boy ♀（￣▽￣）/ nice girl ╮（╯◇╰）╭ kiss ╭（′▽‵）╭（′▽‵）╭（′▽‵）╯ GO! （#￣▽￣#）shy \（￣︶￣）/ hug │ ██ ├╮ │ latte ├╯ │ ██ │ ╰───╯latte The photo below it means someone very angry and push the table down 😂😂😂

In week 4 tutorial, we are divided into two groups to complete the two tasks, indoor work and outside work. My group do the indoor work first. We ues the coloured ribbon，string, nails, tape to make up a sentence, we can not ues the scissors to cut apart. It is difficult to do that. Finally, l am not finsh the whole sentence. The terrible thing is, look at it at a glance, and don't recognize the word clearly. The whole sentence is"my box with five dozen liquor jugs". Another outside work is use the brush to write the sentence under the sunshine. Before this, l think this is the easy work to do, just write, but l was wrong. The sun will dry up the sun faster, so we work together, one person write the words, one person deepen the words, one person take photos and one keep off the sunlight. A good team work.

In this workshop, we do a exhibition about "Hello my question is...". Three groups have three different kinds of ideas. One group use the tables to do the showcase, put the desktop up. Our group use the lifting glass door to show the work. Another grow do the outside exhibition, l am very wonder how people can make the poster on the outside wall ☻ That is a very interesting class.
