The genre of Christmas music from Beatles tribute bands is far deeper than I would have expected--three bands that I know of so far. Sam Lloyd (Ted the lawyer from "Scrubs") is in this band, singing the "Up on the Housetop" section.
A BONUS TUNE! It's pretty outside my normal realm, but after SNL last night, I couldn't not post it.
Sigh. I had this on 45 when I was a kid, but I let it go in a housecleaning purge because I wasn't that into Star Wars. One of my big regrets (along with not skipping rehearsal to see Max Von Sydow at the Michigan Theatre).
I have no idea how the French lyrics would fit the tune, and this instrumental doesn't help. But if there were lyrics, the "Oui, oui" and "Non, non" wouldn't stand out so much--and the song would be the poorer for it.
Walk Off The Earth--another group I flippin' adore. And they actually make this song groove, which is way rare and unusual. I mean, given that it's about a drummer and all. And I'm LOVING the different personalities with the dogs.
Pro tip! Ray Charles, the arranger and leader of the Ray Charles Singers, is NOT the guy you're probably picturing right now. This guy is still with us (at 95 years old) and way the hell less funky. This song seems to have dropped off the radar entirely, and I think we're the poorer for it.
Generally speaking, I think artists do themselves a disservice when they drag down the tempo... but I think it kind of works here. Kind of. And it also kind of sounds like they can't quite cut the parts at full speed.
So, apparently, Joy. Joy joy joy joy joy joy joy joy joy. Next to the Glad Singers, Ren & Stimpy sound like seasonal depression. Make no mistake: joy.
