CHARA INTRO: next up, dylan hwang. he's a 27yr old yuseong bay native, though his heart's not entirely here & he's only recently come back. he's the manager of ojo records and a "rockstar" (used loosely) on hiatus. you can view his stats here & his pinterest here if interested!

( ... ) she begins putting together the ingredients in a bowl and placing them on a hot griddle, waiting for the bubbles to form throughout the pancakes before flipping them. she begins stacking them on a plate before finding a few joints that she had rolled the night earlier, lighting one with the flame from her stove. surely if the pancakes weren't enough to wake dylan, the sweet aroma of her weed would.

admittedly, dylan had had his doubts about living with sunny. none of the doubts had anything to do with her, exactly, just with the idea of coexistence in general. he is, and has always been, a solitary creature in disguise as a people-person—or, as some of those who have known him would say, a commitment-phobe.

living with someone, especially living with family, carries with it an awful lot of commitment. but as he stirs from his deep slumber, he's grateful for the signs that he's not alone in this house; the sounds, the smells, the increasingly familiar routine of it all. recently, after years of not being able to say as much, he's been waking up ready to start his day.

when he gets out of bed, he steps directly into his slippers; still groggy and half-conscious, he's in the kitchen before he knows it—a predictable man, he follows his nose. "good morning," he greets sunny as he goes through the motions of getting a glass from the cupboard and filling it with the dregs of orange juice from the refrigerator. a predictable man, he puts the empty bottle back in the fridge.

"food smells good," he compliments, halfway asking her to tell him he can help himself; but before she can choose to take the bait or not, he's asking, "can i hit that?" with a vague gesture to the joint in her hand.

( ... ) he takes out a few inserts of capped comb and puts them on the pile to take into his mini workshop -- a shed that has been fixed up to have everything he needs. he cuts off a small piece of comb and hands it to dylan. "here," he says with a smile. "raw honey is good for you, wax and all." he takes a piece for himself, loving the benefits of having his very own hives of worker bees for this very reason -- fresh, raw honey is like a dream he thinks everyone should experience. "ok, let's go spin some honey. you ready?"

once upon a time, dylan would've flinched at the sight of a bee; but knowing yujun has changed dylan's perspective of the world in many ways. he's still not quite as comfortable and enthusiastic as yujun is, but he'd like to think that he's getting there, despite the way his heart rate increases when a bee buzzes slowly past his ear. he reminds himself that scarier things exist in the world (yujun's sister's girlfriend, for example) and it sort of works to make the bees seem less threatening.

"i'd never swat them," he assures, holding up three fingers as a vow. scout's honor, it suggests, though he's not sure if the meaning translates into korean, or if yujun would get it at all. "i really wouldn't, so don't get pissed at me for saying this," he prefaces quickly, "but i'm afraid that if i did, the rest would attack me. they seem to... i don't know, have a sense of camaraderie."

kind of like himself and yujun, he thinks, with the trust that he's putting into yujun now. he sticks close by his friend, almost seeming to uncharacteristically attempt to hide behind him. however, he has a feeling that if a bee struck, yujun would take the bee's side, not his.

"ready as i'll ever be," he responds, still half-chewing the piece of comb he'd been given. he has the respect to shield his mouth behind his hand until he's swallowed it, at least.

the humidity is suffocating. even with the windows open, the lack of any kind of breeze makes the air feel hot and stale as dylan is forced to wonder what the previous owner of this home had been thinking in her refusals to update it with the times. there's no ceiling fan in dylan's room and the small fan swiveling in the corner does little to generate airflow. truthfully, he feels apologetic towards kiha for making him suffer in this environment—but more than that, he feels angry towards his cousin for not finding a more modern elderly woman to inherit a house from.

he and kiha are sitting on the floor ("heat rises," had been his short, defensive explanation) with a jigsaw puzzle scattered between them. with the pieces put together, it'll look like a winter-themed scene of the peanuts gang. but with it only about 15% of the way completed, it looks more like a threat. "do you ever feel like no matter where you go, it's not where you're supposed to be?" he asks suddenly, abandoning the puzzle in favor of falling flat onto his back with a dull thud. the hardwood floor is cold to the touch; he savors the feeling. eyes closed, he continues, "i guess what i mean is... how are you adjusting to being back in the bay? does it feel weird? for me, it feels fuckin' weird."

baby's huddled under the covers. the apartment is cold this morning, which isn't unusual. the old building isn't as well insulated as some of the other newer condos in the area and the cold wind from the ocean tends to make it a few degrees chillier. she wears only a crop top and a pair of underwear, making the blankets a warm welcome. she's drifting in and out of sleep until she hears the water shut off and the sound of footsteps. "you know," she says sleepily, looking up at dylan. "if you're going to keep staying for awhile in the morning, the least you could do is make me breakfast."

he spends an egregious amount of time staring at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. stubble growing in, bags under his eyes, an expression that reads 'pathetic' no matter how hard he tries to change it. there's something about dylan that he's never been able to shake, never will shake, and it comes out the most when he's dragging his feet like this. still, he feigns shamelessness when he exits baby's bathroom and makes his way back to her bed. his attitude suggests that he belongs here while his mind whispers that he ought to let her catch a break from him.

still, he slips back under the covers with her. still without socks, still without shirt, still without having brushed his hair; if it weren't for his sweatpants and minty breath, one would be forced to question if he'd ever left at all.

"what do you want?" he asks her, willing to fulfill any requests. eventually, anyway. for now, he squirms until he finds a comfortable spot. he's on his side, elbow jammed into the mattress, hand propping his head up so he can look at her without obstructions. his other hand is on her bare hip, savoring the feeling. he realizes that he shouldn't be getting as comfortable here as he is, but he's always been the type of guy to take a mile when given an inch.

"i can make really good bowls of cereal, and tolerable french toast."
