#the inward looking self care me before everything mindset is such a plague#to the extent that it’s seen as morally right and correct to put yourself first#the whole ‘omg do I have to listen to my friend/be there for them that’s so boring/tiring’ thing is a micro version of this#but this is what that looks like magnified to a global scale#and a LOT of this stems from the increasingly nuclear ways in which western society dictates that we live our lives#it’s actually NOT toxic or abusive to put someone else’s needs first IN CONTEXT . GIVEN THE SITUATION.#gah. many fundamental critiques of individualism as a way of living and the glorification of it due to the prevalence of western narratives#-> in the media which is what this boils down to#however all the fucking theory aside. be uncomfortable. that’s fine in fact if you’re not. also i wanna talk about how self-care was popularized in the US by the black panther party during the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s. self-care was explicitly political, it was about marginalized people (specifically black people) protecting themselves and taking care of themselves WHILE championing civil rights

from its origins, self care has been about having longevity in the movement while REMAINING in movement. it was never supposed to be such an individualist practice. to see it used to justify looking away from genocide and mass violations of palestinian civil rights is just egregious
