                           "Not going to lie, you're taking this rather... calmly.   Not that I don't appreciate it, but you know, sort of used to things being thrown at me.

                                          Words, shoes, tableware."

          “Pretty practiced, actually.”

She rattled the ice gently in her drink, lifting a brow with her smirk.

                         ”I can make sure you’re still out 100 bucks, though.”

Now, she wasn’t a pro, but she’d had her first taste on the rare occasions when her father would take her along to the lodge. Since then, it was bars and rich kids’ basements, picking it up as easily as she did anything else. Wasn’t necessarily a useful skill: nice party trick, but she really only enjoyed it when boys were getting raucous and boastful. Putting them in their place was almost as fun as winning.

Both eyes narrowed when he missed, but it was likely she was just being paranoid. Was he trying to flirt and let her win? Well: she wouldn’t give him the opportunity.

Rounding to one of the longer sides, she lined up, sinking one ball before moving onto the next. She was aiming to strike just as he posed the question, causing a falter and a complete miss.

          “Scooby-Doo’s - fine.”

Yeah, her voice creaked slightly - it had been surprisingly easy to lose sight of her purpose and forget she was spying on him. Ask questions, give nothing. If he did make out she was his - “soulmate,” she didn’t want him to be able to track her down…still. A first name couldn’t hurt too badly.

          “Or Spencer.”

There was a shrug at the end, as if her name were up for discussion. Still roiling over her own faulty shot, she glanced over at him with a little more venom than intended.

                         ”I guess that makes you Old Man Jenkins?”

                       "And somehow, I am not surprised."

                        "Can you now?" Damon shrugged a shoulder, all fake humbleness. "I'll definitely let you try. Though, just to warn you, I am extremely competitive."

Well, that was interesting. Damon hadn't thought asking for a name would garner more than half-hearted attention as she played, and here he'd made her nervous. He smirked as he rounded the table, settling the cue between thumb and forefinger - and then completely stopped his playing, eyebrows raising.

                        "Old Man Jenkins? Tell me, does this face look 'old' to you?" He twirled a hand in the direction of his face, lips pulling into a frown. "Sure, I'm not really an ascot kind of guy, but I figured I at least earn a Fred, and maybe if I mess up my hair a bit I could be Shaggy." Damon took his shot, mouth quirking back into a small smile as the ball dropped into a corner pocket. He straightened and let out a tired sigh.

                          "However, thank my mother, my name is actually Damon. There are enough Fred's in the world and it doesn't need any more Shaggy's."

Tinny guitar began echoing from Damon's pocket. He took another shot, waited for the ball to hit the pocket and then pulled out his phone, grimacing.

                    "Excuse me, little brother is calling. Yes, oh brother mine?"

"Where are you?"

                     "The Grill, what, did you think I was just going to stand around in the square while the lovely little officers cleaned it up?"

A sigh from Stefan. He always sounded like a god damn bellow, sighing.

"We'll be there momentarily."

Damon turned back to Spencer, smile a little tight.

                       "Apologies, siblings," he emphasized with an eye roll, "if you have them, I'm sure you understand."

The fog rolled in, thick as a blanket through the park, turning the childish setting vaguely sinister. Damon grumbled, shoved his hands further into his coat pockets and continued on down the cobblestone path, waves crashing in the distance.

        “Let’s visit the coast! Stefan said. It’ll be fun, he said. Beaches, soothing waves, you’ll enjoy yourself! Yeah, not god damn likely. If I want a beach, I want a warm beach with people serving alcohol.”

Event planning?

Her nose wrinkled slightly, one brow hitching before she took the drink (non-clock hand) and nursed it slowly. She wasn’t even trying to hide her surprise, or anxiety (which she hoped came off as distaste) as she tried to make out the truth between what she’d seen and what she was hearing.

          “Helping the police?” It was obvious from her tone that she was amused more than serious. Lending a hand to the cops? As in, taking creative license to beat the shit out of anyone causing a public disturbance? ”Wow: they’re getting better. Definitely wouldn’t have pegged you for an undercover.”

She considered lying about the concert but decided a convenient truth would be better…especially since she was hot, sweaty, and her temple was crusting over. She shook her head, as casually as she could. “Not really: just enough to tell the story.”

It was disconcerting, the way he didn’t seem…put in his place by her demeanor. If anything, most people seemed to scatter from her, or cower, or at least find a reason not to spend leisurely time in her presence. But when he moved to the rack, she almost gaped, face sour to match the words under her breath.

          “Does it matter ?”

While she still wasn't exactly welcoming, she hadn't turned him away. Damon was counting that a small victory for his stunning personality. Or maybe just his tenacity.

        "Y'know, giv-" Damon paused and then scoffed, lip curling the slightest bit. "Undercover? Hardly. Gave them an eyewitness report - and a piece of my mind. They were already out in droves and they failed spectacularly at 'keeping the peace'." He finger-quoted the words and rolled his eyes.

So she hadn't been in the midst of the crowd? Damon's eyes flickered to the cut on her temple and then to her hands, but couldn't see her palms as she was still clutching her cue. Maybe on the fringe then, when the vamps had first decided to hell with keeping their secret. Regardless, she was still up to something and the mystery was intriguing enough to keep him entertained.

            "So lemme guess, you're totally," he stressed the word, lips twitching, "clueless when it comes to pool - but give you 10 minutes and I'll be out a hundred bucks."

Damon wanted to grin. The sass from her, though she didn't know he'd heard, was endearing. Too bad he hadn't bumped into her in the crowd of music goers. He took his shot, sinking a single ball and then missing the next on purpose.

"So, should I keep calling you Scooby-Doo or do you actually have a name?"

Morrigan sat atop the strew blanket in the sand, skirt twirl about her and sighed as she glanced to see the guy her brother had hired to lead us on the treasure hunt, for lack of a better term. She watched him fiddle with the phonograph at first. He perked her curiosity at first. Handsome? Maybe. Arrogant? without a doubt. She rolled her eyes and moved back to study her journal and large leather bound book. 

She looked up at his question, arching a brow. ” It’s quite interesting… although I am surprised you know of it, Mr. Salvatore.” She teased as she went back to her book, simply waiting for his dig back at her.

The first half  of his payment for the journey hadn't been half-bad, but Damon couldn't actually say he'd been enjoying himself, the sight of a quiet Miss Morrigan aside. Though, if he were being honest, he rarely enjoyed time spent with people not of his choosing.

Offended, he opened his mouth - and then hastily took another drink. He'd ruined a fair few of these jobs already, letting his anger color his decisions. He couldn't afford to ruin this one.

"I may be better known for fisticuffs - but believe me, I'm hardly a brainless vagrant. You and your brother do, after all, pay me for my knowledge of the area."

Jumpy was a good way to describe her current status, but she still tried to keep a stony face once she’d whipped around and seen exactly who was making their way over to her. Smoothly, she twisted her arm, keeping her clock facing her chest as she held onto the pool cue.

Trying evening? So did he know? With her other hand, she reached towards her head, feeling the small crust of blood there. Could be that, or maybe he’d seen her out there, or maybe it was the look on her face that certainly didn’t read “calm and collected.” She considered letting him know of her legal age, and that it didn’t reach the “required minimum,” but she doubted someone who used pallets as murder weapons would give much of a shit about that.

                       And, let’s be honest, neither did she.

          “Vodka. Soda.”

Christ, maybe he really was losing his touch. In the back of his head, Damon wanted to blame Stefan (though he wanted to blame Stefan for most things, just because he could), he'd spent too many months watching his brother be grossly in love with Elena Gilbert. All that saccharine sweetness was giving him an ulcer. 

Damon waited in silence, eyebrow quirked, half sure that the little brunette was going to tell him to shove it - or just ignore him completely, if he was reading that hint of antipathy right. But the feeling passed and she answered, though there was hardly a sense of enjoyment.

              "Mystic Falls, you know? I help out with event planning around here and everything went to shit tonight because some idiot thugs decided to make a nuisance of themselves." He fetched her drink, handed it over and then leaned his hip against the pool table.

"Tried to lend a hand to the cops, but there's only so much I can do. You didn't get caught in that madness outside, did you?"

Damon glanced at the pool cue in her hand, sauntering over to the rack on the wall. Stefan and Elena were going to want to go over the square with a fine tooth comb, he could relax and play a round of pool while he waited.

             "Have room for another player?" Damon asked, not bothering to wait for her answer as he selected a cue.

ooc; yoooo, just a quick notice for all you lovely new followers. i'm not much for canon roleplaying, at all, really. serious canon divergence, or canon re-write? i can do it, but i am very behind in canon. if you aren't a chara from early S4, pre The Originals episode, it's very likely that i have no idea who you are. i am almost exclusively an AU roleplayer, so apologies if that deters you!

Thank god he was taking a phone call, and she didn’t have to try to overhear a brooding conversation with the bartender or the still silence of him downing a drink. She couldn’t hear much from here, but she picked out a few words, entire face cinched as she racked up without much care and set up the cue ball. Ditching. Soulmate. Human?

                - was he expecting a horse?

It threw her off slightly, because by the time she realized she was staring, she also realized he had caught her glance and was sending her what she could only assume was his best material - it was, in all honesty, not a horrible grin. Or face.

No doubt she looked shocked and sick when she turned away quickly, the back of her neck burning at the thought of being made. Was she not being subtle enough? Or maybe her “~soulmate” followed the same sort of logic she did and didn’t really give a damn about societal conventions of destiny - spread your seed wherever you want.

That train of thought derailed as soon as her phone began buzzing again, and she dug into her pocket (perhaps a little too anxiously) before pressing it to her ear.

          “Hanna.”

Well, that was not the response his smile usually received. A smile in return, outright flirting and suggestive looks, and more than a handful of 'fuck you's - but a panicked grimace? 

If he hadn't been sure of himself - and of all things, Damon knew he was attractive to a fair amount of people - he might have thought he looked bad. He surreptitiously rubbed at his cheek, and seeing the smudge on his fingers, wondered if she had a particular aversion to dirt. Maybe he had gone a little overboard when tricking Liz.

Whatever.

He had more important things to worry about, like keeping Elena from making it her little do-gooder mission to help his soulmate 'see the good in him' or something equally feelsy.

"-reconnaissance, right now."

Or maybe he didn't. He waved his hand at the bartender, muttered a quick 'usual' and then settled in, hoping to hear more - but the voice on the other end of the line was high pitched and of the teenage variety. Whatever mission the young brunette was on didn't seem to be supernaturally oriented... Though that didn't mean he wasn't curious anyway. He meandered closer to the pool tables.

"Pick your poison, Scooby-doo, my treat. Looks like you've had a trying evening."
