i got myself thinking about why the integration implied at the end of the series would literally be signing elliot’s death sentence …
integration is , on its base level , when two ( or more ) alters merge to create one new one , usually with aspects of both involved . a full system integration is sometimes the end goal of systems ; where all pieces of the original person bind together into one person , no longer a system . this is not always the method of recovery that is best for systems , though ! in a lot of cases , around half if not more , are focused on making the system function well within themselves , and helping these alters function in their roles for the good of the system as a whole .
elliot fuckin’ alderson should NOT be in the integration method of recovery .
( not yet , if EVER )
he has a long ways to go until he is mentally capable of handling not only the stressors of the environment he’s in without the safety net of his alters , but he’s only just recently un-repressed some seriously heavy memories that he should be working with mr robot to slowly work through . he knows that yes , edward did some really bad shit - but by integrating , since mr robot knows the specific memories , elliot would be subject to knowing EVERYTHING about what happened to him , and those are not memories that should be taken in all at once , let alone memories he can deal with at a very fragile time of his life like that .
the ending is very satisfying when it comes to the narrative aspect of the show , but elliot would not be able to cope as an integrated system . he has not tackled his persecutor in magda ; she’s still blaming him for the abuse he suffered as a child . he has not reconciled with peacekeeper ; he is still living in a fantasy world and definitely not prepared to deal with the realities of the lifestyle mastermind has created . he has not outgrown his need for mr robot’s support ; he desperately needs that positive father figure in his life while he works through the fact that his own father figure was a monster . and again , he should not be left dealing with all of his memories on his own .
the best course of action , in my personal opinion , is for the system to work on communication between the parts ; by creating a system that feels less like a power struggle and more like a team , elliot as a whole would be MUCH more well - adjusted . this could also help him temper that loneliness he always feels ; he could always have someone to trust or talk to within himself .
anyways , i have a lot of feelings about this , and i’ll definitely be writing more on why my elliot’s system is not and likely will never be integrated - being a system is not a sign of being broken and it shouldn’t need to be “ fixed ” . it’s a defense mechanism , it’s a way of survival , and in certain circumstances for certain people , it is a way to thrive in situations where you normally couldn’t .
