I hate that particular group of people who, when they find out you’re exmormon, start going, “HAHA yeah, Mormonism is so stupid! Jesus came to America? More scriptures? How dumb do people have to be to believe that stuff haha?!”
Me. I believed it.
And lots of people I care about still believe it.
It’s a high control religion, it’s manipulative, and if you’d been born into it and all your friends and your family and most of the adults in your life believed it—yeah, you’d probably believe it too, at least for a good while.
And adult converts aren’t stupid either. A lot of them have recently suffered a serious loss, are isolated, struggling, or in some other way vulnerable to a religion that makes them feel loved and gives them lots of shiny promises about their future.
It’s not about stupid.
my favorite headcanon about church leaders is that they just don’t know women can masturbate and that’s the reason they don’t give the “masturbate and die” lesson to the young women like they do to the young men
I HAVE. SOME THOUGHTS. about how mormons are constantly made fun of
ITS INTENTIONAL !!!! THE CULTURE OF MAKING FUN OF MORMONS IS INTENTIONAL AND CREATED BY MORMONS !!!!
explanation: the banning of random substances such as coffee and tea (which are very common things to drink), the ridiculous outlines for what is and isn't appropriate to wear which usually makes kids feel ashamed of their bodies and also makes them feel out of place !
All of this is extremely intentional imo. It enforces the us vs them logic. And by purposely making ur members out of place in their own communities and native cultures (explanation about this in a second) u are alienating them and further seperating them from ppl outside the cult
Since ur being made fun of u get more defensive and grip even more tightly to Mormonism !!!
Going back to the native communities !!! A lot of Mormonism is very white. And Mormonism does NOT like things that aren't white. U are actively encouraged to not practice parts of ur culture that aren't "Mormon appropriate" which created a bit division in between u and ur own culture and people. which further isolates u. and drives u further into the cult
(for ex/ the middle eastern tradition of çay (drinking tea) while chatting after meals. U always stay for çay after a meal ! Except me. I never did. Because I wasn't allowed to. And everyone thought it was so weird. Cuz it was. 😐)
(another ex/ being made fun of for not knowing pop culture references because I wasn't allowed to follow pop culture which further and further alienated me from everyone my age which drove me into the arms of the mormon youth who I could relate to)

Why did it ever matter how many times my ears were pierced?
Why was my skirt length so important?
Why were my bare shoulders so shameful that 8-year-old me had to wear a white T-shirt under every spaghetti strap dress in order to be “modest”?
Why was my little girl stomach so sinful that I had to wear an uncomfortable one piece swimsuit?
Why were even temporary tattoos so bad, I had to throw away the Star Wars and Disney Princess ones I got in the little valentines kids passed out at school?
What made these things so important to God? Or rather, to the old men who claimed to speak for Him?
After seeing the cult’s response to gay marriage being legalized back in 2015, this singer named Tyler Glenn left the mormon church and produced a whole album about his experience called Excommunication (which is honestly really good, like even ignoring the heavy ex cult stuff. You should check it out.) And in one of the music videos literally did some of the super-secret-handshake-to-get-into-heaven rituals that you only learn in the temple and if you ever tell an outsider you’re basically a servant of the devil.
He worked those into the choreography, essentially showed them to the entire world, which. Fucking respect, bro.
(The song’s also a fucking banger. Trash by Tyler Glenn)
i love seeing exmormons find non oppressive religions that suit them. Wether it's finding comfort in judaism or norse gods it's so nice to see exmos finding a religion that makes them feel good. This goes for atheists too ofc! exmos who reject all religion especially organized religion and don't believe in a god or any gods anymore are so valid as well
i guess what I'm trying to say is i love seeing exmos have the freedom to make their own religious choices no matter what those choices are. To be able to make these choices outside of the influence of the cult they grew up in. All the power to you guys. ily all

In some feelings...
My cousin is on a mission. She sends group emails nearly weekly updating all of us and usually I don't read them because they make me feel gross. This last email though... there wasn't much to it but the content genuinely sickens and saddens me.
She is now actively teaching church members how to recruit and keep people in church. She is calling people who aren't open to learning about mormonism "hard-hearted" to their faces as a "joke". She is talking at school campuses "disproving" the secular "lies" about mormonism. I'm not surprised or even disappointed. I'm just sad. I have known this girl since she was born and seeing her brainwash herself further and indoctrinate others in real time hurts.
