Muslim girls will literally be born to ultra religious parents and a mom and sisters who all wear hijabs and still have the audacity to say they “chose” to wear the hijab.... bitch stfu and sit down nobody ever came and asked you if you wanted to wear it when you were 13. The funniest/best way to flip it on them is just asking what would happen if they “chose” to stop wearing it.
It is not your job to raise your siblings. If your parent uses you as a baby sitter while they go out night after night, without filling you in, you have every right to feel neglected. Being the older or more well equipped sibling shouldn’t make you a place holder for a vacant parent. You’re worth more than that, and it’s not your responsibility.
Atheism is a process. You dont have a magical moment or a sudden change of heart. The world doesn’t stop spinning, the puzzle piece doesn’t magically fit into place, you can’t pinpoint a moment of paradigm shift.
Its nights of praying and wondering if someone is out there even listening and that shocks you because there used to be no doubt about it before.
Its sometimes months of praying for a sign, its reading research and scriptures to see if maybe you’re wrong and misguided as your scripture and your parents told you.
Even when you identify as an atheist for months a lingering doubt may be present in your mind from your upbringing. A near death experience may make you fear you’re off to hell because you really were wrong.
But then one of those days is a very ordinary day you realise all that seems foolish. Death doesn’t seem so daunting anymore and you can’t seem to remember when you discarded your belief in “the perils of the grave”. One of those days you sit in a hospital lobby praying for a loved one and you realise you know deep inside no one out there is listening.
Its a process and you dont know when the wheels turned, when the wind shifted. It just did and you’re a whole new person because of it. After that, after that point of realisation, return is truly impossible.

The mosque that was once a pub
My local mosque was once a beautiful, busy pub. Pints were had, pork scratchings were eaten and memories were made. It is now a bleak, miserable building - full of seriousness, despair and grief. Many times I have sat on the dirty carpeted floor and been forced to listen to a fat religious crackpot on the tv screen tell me how to live and tell me what my values should be. So many times, I have scoffed at the audacity of the crackpot and tried so hard to block out the wails of screaming children, loud whispers of gossiping mothers and the loud booming voice of the religious crackpot over the speakers. Countless times my mother has glared at me when I have refused to beat my chest like an animal at the end of the religious lecture. The trauma of going to the mosque is too much to bear especially in the month of Muharram. It's not a place of contemplation, it's not a place where I have ever felt peace or happiness. I wish it was still a fucking pub.

idk how many of you used follow Salwa (tyara4evr), but she recently passed away. Some people are saying it’s because of a heart attack, but her friends said that she committed suicide. I don’t think she will gain any media attention in the ME because it’s suicide and khaleeji countries will always care about their image over everything.
She went through so much, especially when her family found out about her views on religion, and she wrote a bit about it on her blog. I found these pictures from twitter, it’s written by her friend and is more about how much she suffered from her family’s abuse.
I knew Salwa for a couple of years, she had at least two suicide attempts that I know of.

Her brother did beat her, and her mother was constantly in the way of her getting professional psychological help. She was constantly surrounded by toxic people. She didn’t own a phone, she wasn’t allowed to leave the house by herself, she was constantly under the suspicion of her mother and disgusting brother. Her goal was to leave the country and start anew…she loved to draw and express herself through art and she was so good at gaming. Her only constant companion was her cat olafur. She was forcefully separated from someone she loved with the help of the police. The government isn’t helping women, it’s only covering up the abuse that their families subject them to. Please don’t forget her :’(
an interesting thing I have thought of a lot, a rebuttal to those who defend the prophet marrying a child (or, at best, a 17 year old) with the excuse that it was normal for his time - many things were normal for his time. Drinking alcohol, for example, was hugely popular but the prophet made it sinful. he could manage that but could not get rid of child marriage, even took part in it himself. Is there any other defence that could be given to him?
A while ago I was told that the marriage was okay because back in the day girls matured faster and got menopause sooner but I’m having a hard time believing that. 17 wouldn’t be that much better either considering mo would have been old enough to be her dad.
But you’re right, he could’ve just made child marriage a sin but he didn’t do that. And since he’s supposed to be the example of a perfect muslim, people will use his marriage as a defense to their creepy marriage too.
When people tell stories about how their parents beat them, it’s always interesting to see their face change because they expected me to say “me too lol” but I instead say “I’m really sorry. You didn’t deserve that” Last time a co worker who also has West Indian parents was telling me in a joking way how he remembers being beaten with a belt because lied about his report card. As he was laughing it off and saying he deserved it, I just said “wow that’s awful hun. You didn’t deserve that.” And his whole face changed. Like it hadn’t occurred to him that it’s messed up that a part of remembering his childhood is remembering how badly it hurt to be beaten so badly at such a young age. Another time I had a friend, non West Indian parents, who talked about how she made a mess on a dress that her parents got her. It was really expensive apparently and she spilled red juice on it. She talked about how she was ordered to take the dress of and was beaten with a belt too without any clothes on. And she was laughing and said “I was a bad ass kid lol” and I said “no hun you were just a kid”. And she looked at me and immediately stopped laughing and just sat there like “yea…I was just a kid. I don’t know why they did that to me” My mom was raised in a household where she was beaten so badly….I just don’t understand how she is so loving now growing up in a home where she got so little love. They called it discipline, but once she became a social worker she began to see that it was abuse. That she grew up terrified of her parents, although they thought it was respect that my mom felt. It was fear. We have to get comfortable challenging what is often seen as cultural norms. We have to be a generation of people who are not ashamed to say “I would never beat my child”.
Why does it even matter, dear mother, whether or not I dress like a woman if I still have to follow the Islamic dress code which requires me to hide my womanly features?
