Which Place Is More Sexist: The Middle East Or Latin America?
A semi-naked woman in a sequined Carnival costume. A veiled woman with only her eyes showing in a niqab. Two stereotypes of two vastly different regions — Latin America and the Middle East.
On the surface, these two images couldn’t be more diametrically opposed. What could the two have in common, right? What a woman wears — or what she doesn’t wear, in Brazil’s case — is often interpreted as a sign of her emancipation. The veil, for many, is a symbol of female oppression; the right to wear a bikini, one of liberation.
As a woman and a foreigner who lived in Baghdad and Cairo and worked throughout the Middle East for years, I always felt the need to dress modestly and respectfully. Frankly, my recent move back to Latin America was initially a relief. Brazil is the land where less is more — and it was wonderful to put on whatever I wanted.
But underneath the sartorial differences, the Middle East and Latin America’s most famously immodest country both impose their own burdens on women in the way they are treated and perceived.
And that’s the thing about Brazil: It has a female president, and women are well-represented in the work force. This isn’t Saudi Arabia, where women cannot drive, or Afghanistan under the Taliban, where women could not study.
And yet it is one of the most dangerous countries to be female in.
Statistics show that about every two hours a woman is murdered in Brazil, a country with the seventh highest rate of violence against women in the world.

There are all kinds of ways to subjugate women. Some are more insidious than others.
Texas death row inmate Ray Jasper is scheduled to be put to death on March 19. He has written us a letter that, he acknowledges, "could be my final statement on earth." It is well worth your time.
I rarely know quite what to say when I'm asked why I believe there's still racism in this country. That's why this letter is important. I had a tough moment when I got partway through it and almost stopped reading. I realized I was about to go scroll through Facebook instead of finishing this man's last words to humanity before his execution tomorrow. What does that say about my attention span and the insulation of a computer screen?
Not good things, I'm afraid.
CPS School Closings: A Miscalculated Step?

When Chicago Public Schools announced on March 21st, 2013 that they would be closing 54 under-utilized and under-performing elementary schools around the city, parents at Lyman Trumbull Elementary School in Andersonville were outraged that their school was slated for closure.
There are many arguments against the closings: potential overcrowding, severe disruption of students’ education, and the dangers of children crossing gang lines to attend school. According to the Chicago Teacher’s Union, 90 percent of the schools slated to be closed have a majority black population, prompting allegations of racism in the school closing choices. But at Trumbull Elementary, located at 5200 N. Ashland Ave., parents and faculty are particularly angry that the utilization formulas used to determine which schools are closed do not allow enough room for their Special Education classes.

Bombs on Marathon Monday
As a Boston native and a human being, I am horrified by the events in the city today. I immediately called both of my parents and my best friend, who attends a college very close to Copley Square. I stayed glued to both Boston.com updates and ABC news updates- desperately wanting to know why, why, why?
In the cultural climate of this country, it feels almost natural to assume terrorism, as many lawmakers are. Even the chief of the BPD said that he couldn't comment but that the crowd could come to their own conclusions based on events.
In this Washington Post article, Max Fisher talks about how in the Muslim world, the same assumption springs to mind, but with the following thought being "Please don't let it be a Muslim". It's a fascinating call for recognition of the humanity and decency of the vast, vast majority of Muslims. After all, this could just as easily be a CRAZY Bostonian looking for retribution for some imagined slight.

In Focus: Holi 2013: The Festival of Colors
This week Hindus around the world celebrated Holi, the Festival of Colors. Holi is a popular springtime celebration observed on the last full moon of the lunar month. Participants traditionally throw bright, vibrant powders at friends and strangers alike as they celebrate the arrival of spring, commemorate Krishna’s pranks, and allow each other a momentary freedom — a chance to drop their inhibitions and simply play and dance. Gathered here are images of this year’s Holi festival from across India.

While researching Kelefa Sanneh’s article about Dapper Dan, which ran in The New Yorker’s recent Style Issue, we looked at the work of many photographers who covered the eighties hip-hop scene. One of them, Janette Beckman, recently returned from Caracas, where she photographed the hip-hop community at a school that teaches a new kind of break dance and music called Tuki, which mixes street styles, pop culture, house, and techno.
Tuki is taught at Tiuna el Fuerte, a cultural center built from old shipping containers and covered in graffiti, in the El Valle barrio. There is a recording studio, an underground performance space, and hip-hop and break-dancing workshops. It’s funded by the Chávez government, and is run by the rap artists Apache, a.k.a. Cultur MC, and Piky.
