Infinite is definitely strong but he can't take everyone down, so why did it take this long for everyone to knock the Eggman empire over? I mean they took down Neo Metal Sonic, they had taken down Eggman's forces time after time again, what changed?
My headcanon is that Sonic Forces was simply one blunder after another. Everyone was conveniently separated and no one was in the right place at the right time.
Team Dark? Somewhere on the other side of the globe, didn't hear about Infinite's take over until GUN got dismantled. They also notably weren't together for most of the time.
The Chaotix? Out on some mission before getting surprise attacked by Infinite. They manage to get to safety and join the resistance, but they were nearly crushed that one time.
Cream and Vanilla? You better believe if Infinite tried to jump Cream he would get soloed by a child. Unfortunately, Cream and Vanilla had taken a vacation (maybe different continent, off planet, even in the sol dimension we really never seen them) and coincidentally came back after Forces ended.
Silver? He wakes up in the future, finds out his powers are gone, the world is nearly wiped out and has to go back in time to fix the past. He manages to learn how to fly again but picking up objects is difficult and he doesn't have much time to relearn.
He manages to make his way back into past and warns Knuckles. Mind you, it was probably a better idea to tell Shadow, Rouge, or Tails, the strategic people to lead a resistance. Silver could have found Amy and the others, but they were probably out somewhere else before Infinite would have surprise attack them.
That said, Knuckles, Amy, and Tails (even Silver) could have tried their luck in jumping him (even to avenge Sonic) why not?
Eggman did the strategic thing by dismantling GUN. Maybe GUN wouldn't have been the best thing to take down the Eggman empire, but they could have at least protected the civilians, instead it was left to the resistance to try and save as many people as possible. Which, mind you, they probably sucked at. Amy and Knuckles probably did the best they can, they probably weren't good at it but they did what they can.
Then here comes my funnier editions: none of them were in good positions, neither the resistance nor the Eggman army.
Infinite was only given information on where Sonic was, and not Shadow, deciding to first take out Sonic then spend nearly the next several months looking for Shadow. Sure he cause destruction and pain but he was focused on finding this other hedgehog. That being said, he projected all his insecurities on Sonic just to beat him up.
Knuckles, Amy, and Silver had to transport civilians out of the warzone while avoiding Eggman forces (and Infinite) so they gather the remaining people into a truck with Espio and Charmy in front seat. Mind you, Espio and Charmy didn't show up at the first Team Sonic Racing, probably because they couldn't drive. The only reason they survived the nightmarish driving was because they didn't immediately crash and die and Infinite struggled at aiming at a moving target.
Infinite trains Sonic (ex: tries to torture) with his phantom ruby powers to get him to break. It doesn't, Sonic just learns to get better at surviving, and it eases the boredom that would have broken him in.
Infinite nearly demolishes headquarters, but he miscalculates the wrong place and blows up an empty building, buying enough time for the resistance to escape.
Infinite tries to go after Angel Island, he can't find the darn island and when he does, it floats away from them.
(some of the civilians manage to board angel island and stay there for the duration of the forces war before heading back home once the dust is settled.)
Omega probably did a solid on Infinite, so Infinite dismantled him. Tails was just to devastated about everything that he couldn't even fix things. (dang this just got sad.)
