Welcome to the 2025 Broken Tomarrymort Telephone!

We’ve made a few changes from the 2024 rules, so even if you participated last year please take a few moments to review the following.

All participants who have stated they are comfortable going first will be added to a randomiser. Once selected, they will be contacted to check the date range works for them.

Once the start date and first person have been confirmed, the rest of the participants will be randomised and assigned a date range that doesn't conflict with any of their unavailable dates. Everyone will be contacted to confirm the date range works for them. Once all the participants have been confirmed, the timeline will be posted.

The first participant will be given a secret prompt on the Sunday before the Telephone starts, and have until the following Sunday to complete their portion of the Telephone. This will continue on until all participants have submitted their portion and the Telephone is complete.

Please submit your prompt to Jenny or the Telephone Tumblr account’s DMs by 11:59 PM PT on the Sunday of your week, and your fic (as a Google Doc link, .doc file, etc. – some that will preserve formatting) or a link to your artwork to jenny/the Telephone Tumblr as soon as possible afterwards. Please name your file “exquisite telephone 25 [name]” and include the prompt you got at the beginning of your file. Prompts will be passed on to the next author/artist ASAP.

Submission guidelines:

Authors will write a roughly 1,000-word fic (less is fine; maximum word count is 5,000 words) interpreting the prompt they are given.

Artists will draw a single fanart scene with a small amount of dialogue/up to three scenes with no dialogue (or whatever you can comfortably draw in one week) interpreting the prompt they are given.

Writing or drawing explicit/NSFW content is a-okay! Writing or drawing less than the guidelines is fine!

Rules about prompts

The main rules:

This year, we’ve decided to format them like a Clue accusation (though they aren’t meant to be accusatory): [Character] in the [location] with [person or thing].

The prompt cannot have the same wording as the one you received. Try to change all three of the fill-in words/phrases; let us know if you’re having trouble!

The no-foolin’ rules:

Absolutely no NSFW content in the prompt. Nothing sexually explicit, violent, gory, etc.

Do not codify your preferences (including gender, race, top/bottom dynamics, etc.) in the prompt. Write/draw whichever character and story elements you prefer in your fic/art; we encourage it! But please do not include them in your prompt.

Also: If you have had negative interactions with the person before or after you in the Telephone order, please let us know. If, during the course of the Telephone, another participant behaves negatively towards you, let us know. If you wish to be moved elsewhere in the order, we will accommodate!

We want everyone to have a good experience with this fandom game – it’s meant to be a fun challenge. We will not tolerate anyone using the Telephone to bully or harass anyone else. Keep any fandom drama outside of this game.

Failure to adhere to these rules will lead to a warning and/or your removal from the Telephone and the Corpse server.

If at any point your availability changes or you're having difficulties with your part of the Telephone, please reach out to Jenny or me (Flaky).

If you have to withdraw, that’s completely fine – as long as you let us know as far in advance as possible (even if that’s midway through your week). Schedules change, life happens, we get it. Even if it’s a quick “I can’t do my Telephone week” – let us know and we’ll take care of it!

The basic concept is this: The starting person will write a roughly 1,000-word one-shot (more or less is fine) or draw a single fanart scene with a small amount of dialogue/up to three scenes with no dialogue based on a secret prompt. Once they're finished, they'll sum up their fic/artwork in a single sentence, which will be given to the next person in the chain. Each participant will have one week to complete their section of the Telephone.
