Feminism
"Feminism: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes" - Merriam-Webster Dictionary
This is a topic that people of the contemporary western culture seem to think is “old news” in that because the19th amendment happened, it solved all equality issues amongst men and women since 1920 (which was only less than 100 years ago, people). This is false. Feminism is also considered a “hot topic” over the last couple of years due to a “seemingly” “recent” “surge” in females gaining some sort of recognition such as Lena Dunham or the women of “Bridesmaids” or Wendy Davis or Beyoncé. But y’all, women have been around, just no one has seemed to care until this recent “fad” that women are suddenly cool and talented and can be successful. It’s not a recent thing, it’s been happening forever, yet still women are not paid equally as men, anything related to femininity is looked at as weak, and women are constantly undermined when it comes to things like science, math, technology, or logic (and the list goes on and on). So if you’re one of those people that have said or thought that feminism is old news, talked about too much, or even confused it with the act of hating men, you are wrong.
Today a girl my age told me (adamantly and somewhat proudly) that she was not a feminist. That is saying (proudly) that she does not support equality for herself. Being a feminist doesn’t mean being a “cRaZy” woman who doesn’t want to shave her armpits, but feminists are those who support equality among men and women and they support the right to choose to be whatever you want to be and not have to abide to societal gender norms but it’s also saying that if a woman does not want to shave her armpits, she does not have to, but if a woman does, she is certainly welcome to do so. It’s about not telling women or men what to do, how to do it, or when to do it. That’s it. That’s the bottom line. There’s nothing fancy or outlandish about it so to hear another female decide they don’t want to be associated with supporting equal opportunities and rights for themselves boggles my mind.
But it’s not just about women either. It is also about equality for men. It’s supporting men who feel compelled to express emotions or other “feminine” things (because we all know emotions are just for girls, right? **sarcasm**) and don’t want to be made fun of or deemed a “pussy,” which is calling a male a slurred name for a female body part because it’s supposedly equal to calling them weak because women are supposedly weaker than men (more sarcasm, guys). Feminism is not at all about hating men but it is equally as supportive for men as it is for women to be who they want to be and be treated equally for whatever they choose.
Maybe this seems like it’s been talked about a lot, but there are so many people who are still uninformed of what feminism actually is and it is completely opposite of any form of hatred towards any sex. It is supportive of all, as all are equal and none are above or below the other.
