GIRL HELP IM LOST IN THE ARCHIVES
{ Roleplay starter — Anyone’s free to interact !! }
Fog drifts about the Archives. Not quite enough to catch one’s eye, just enough to allow unease to creep into your psyche just as it does the shelves of statements. A man stands amongst it, dressed far too casual for an academic institution, though the name tag claiming him to be "A. Fairclough" pinned to his worn-out jacket clearly states he does work here. A light chill ripples through the shelves as he heaves a heavy box off and to the floor, crouching to inspect the contents and audibly groaning when his suspicions of it- and likely the whole section it’s in -not being properly organized.
Busy or not, he is an Institute employee. When he glances up at the sound of someone invading his space wandering towards his area of the Archives, he offers a half-hearted wave.
“Mornin’. You need help looking for a statement, or…?”
Samaa's almost startled but keeps herself from jumping, she hadn't noticed the man, internally she chides herself for not paying enough attention, she should know better stuff like that gets people like her killed.
"Hi, yes, good morning," she replies, "I was trying to add another statement to the pile, but no matter what I try I get lost or something everytime I come here. At least it wasn't the yellow door this time." She let's out a semi-forced laugh thats probably supposed to relieve some tension.
The man smiles at her laugh, though it’s a tense smile. He stands and brushes off his knees as he speaks.
“Yeah, the door’s… the worst…”
It’s mumbled, though the tone sounds almost targeted like he’s speaking from experience. He shakes his head as if to discard the thought.
“Whatcha got there, then? I can help you get it to where it’s supposed to go.”
He tries to peer at the statement she holds. The fog licks at him when he moves, curling its wisps around his pants legs and rippling with his steps.
AJ! I hope you enjoyed your little… how do I phrase this? Vacation, let’s say, but it’s time to come home now.

Its been a while since Carol has visited the Magnus institute, but its somewhere she always seems to return to .Theres always something new to read or sometimes shes lucky enough to visit when there was something interesting to watch. But today her only goal was to see if any new statements might be helpful to her. she walks past reception and onto the stairs down to the archives without disruption. The lady at the front desk and the staff that walk past are the same as always, none of them register her or her passing them by, the advantages of her condition. Though something shes so used to now she doesn’t spend much time thinking on it. Its easy to feel separated from the world when no one ever acknowledges your part of it.
As she heads down the stairs into the archives, something feels different. She takes of and cleans her glasses on the edge of her jumper and looks again.. no that really was fog? Maybe there was something happening here today after all.
As she steps into the archives shes surprised to see someone she hasn’t seen before. Carol is confused a moment, she wasn’t great with remembering faces, but she’d though after her past visits she at least knew the archive staff. Though she did also visit generally outside working hours.
Carol gets closer , interested in this person she hasn’t see before. He seem different, like others shes seen before, the area around him seems colder.
What she wasn’t expecting, and made her jump slightly. Was when the man suddenly looked towards her , and talked to her.
She looks behind her in confusion. Did someone else come down the stairs after her. But she quickly realizes that no, it was just her and the man here, and he was in fact talking to her.
How was he? Was it the fog? It wasn’t the first time she’d been seen but it was rare enough to started her. Though she tries to regain her composure quickly as the man is probably expecting a reply. What had he asked? A statement right.. “ Oh no, I was just down here to see the more recently archived statements.”
This was ok right?, no way he knows everyone that works in the building. She can just pretend right.
AJ nods, scratching the back of his neck as he twists to look down the aisle of towering shelves, as if trying to remember where those newer statements would be. There’s a slight narrow to his eyes and a scrunch of his nose when he looks back, eyes dancing over the woman.
“Yeah, uh.. sorry, did the bossman say you could be down here, or-..?”
He’s still fidgeting with the bit of hair resting on the nape of his neck, mullet too short to really tug on the hair as he likes,
“I don’t recognize you from the archives, I mean. Uh.. if you need help finding the statements, I probably can. Organizing them’s my job, but I’ve barely gotten through, like, a quarter of the work that needs to be done. So they’re kind of. Everywhere. Sorry.”
Confidence, if you act like you belong, most people don’t question it.
“Oh, yeh I’ve got permission to be down here, don’t worry. but no I’m not archive staff. I’m Carol”
She offers a hand to shake, hoping for an introduction. Who is this man the fog seems to cling to? And is he looking at her funny or is she just not used to eye contact?
“I don’t want to interrupt your work, I wouldn’t want you getting in trouble for not finishing in time. I know my way around well enough, I’ll have a quick look and be on my way.”
He accepts the offered hand, his own an uncomfortable cold. Wisps of fog lick at his ankles.
“Aj.”
His response is simple. Strange.
“And, really, miss Carol, I insist. Bossman won’t mind as long as I’m not slackin’. Helpin’ someone isn’t slackin’.”
He grins, big and wide, tooth gap and missing premolar tooth making it seem almost boyish.
“Especially not if it stills gets me out of being alone back here. What was it you said you wanted? Newer statements?”
Carol just offers up a smile and tries not react to how cold his hand is.
Ok hes probably suspicious, and I have no idea if the “boss” he is referring to is the archivist or the guy that owns the building. But he doesn’t seem like he want to hurt her, or at least not yet. and running away and coming back later is always an option if this goes badly at some point.
“ well if you insist”
She pulls her jumper sleaves down a bit over her hands, feeling the chill in the air a bit more than she’s used to.
“ yeh just the newer ones, I’ve documented a lot of the older ones already“
Documented, sounds like a good ,I work here ,word.
“why are you down here alone anyway? Where is everyone?”
“Newer statements are a bit of a ways away, I got to them first. I’m just stuck organizing the old Archivist’s shitty system.”
AJ gestures for Carol to follow him as he starts off, hands then easing into his jacket pockets.
“Everyone else works more… well, closer up to the front, I guess. They usually work more with research and the whole people part of the job. Elias thought my talents,”
His hands flick out of the jacket pockets to mockingly wave around in a sort-of 'jazz hands' gesture,
“Were better spent away from the others. Needed someone with their full time dedicated to organizing, I guess.”
He eyes her,
“What about you? What do you do ‘round here?”
“ shame you spend most your time in the back by yourself, though I suppose at least its peaceful. So your “talents” are organizing?”
Carol follows, looking AJ over while walking just behind him. He seems normal at least visually. Fog and coldness seem pretty normal for this theme-ing of weird she supposes. Either he hasn’t noticed the fog or its normal to him. she should stop staring before he starts feeling it.
She looks at the shelves as they pass, noticing the changes since she was last here.
“ oh me? I’m researching a case. Haven’t had any breakthroughs yet, so I keep an eye on anything new in incase it helps”
AJ hums in response. He does feel her eyes on him, of course he does, but he in all honesty didn’t assume it was her. He scratches at the pinprick-y feeling on the back of his neck. The fog seems to drift wherever he wanders, cascading over the tiled floor like uncomfortably damp carpeting.
“Really? What’s the case? I might be able to help.”
Score. More reason to get off work. He’s nailing it today.
Visually, AJ is interesting, but not particularly appealing. Once vibrantly dyed mullet is now a dull rusty-orange, though his piercings still shine under the Archives’ lights. His dress is casual, which would be odd for an academic institution, but he’s never supposed to really interact with people outside of coworkers, so…
If the fog wasn’t so wet, Carol would think it was pretty. Little clouds. She did like it when it was foggy. When you could only see down a street before it covered everything. All white, like someone forgot to colour in the world.
“ oh , em. Well its about a person that slowly got forgotten by everyone. Or more like they stopped noticing them? its more detailed than that but that’s the basics. And I’m trying to figure out what they should do now? Though I haven’t found a case that seems similar enough to help yet.
I mean its not all bad I suppose. Most the people in these statements seem to end up dead, so I suppose that’s a silver lineing. ”

“I think I have just the thing for you, actually. Saw something like that recently.”
He abruptly changes course, switching his direction and eyeing the ceiling. It’s his own method to find his way around the archives; the ceiling tiles are reliable to him.
“It’s weird though, yeah. Kinda… gives you the heebie-jeebies. Like, thinking you might end up like that.”
He shrugs.
Carol is surprised by the sudden change of direction. Looks at her hands as he faces her. before passing. Don’t want caught staring . before following after again.
“wait really?! I’ve read so many statements and I haven’t seen anything helpful yet. not that its not informative just not in the right area”
She sees Aj is looking up as they walk, following there line of sight she wonders if he has the place mapped out by the old ceiling tiles somehow?
“well dead is pretty much the end of things so yeh. though the statements that have a clear source of the danger do probably have the best chances of getting away. At least you know what to get away from. Do you read the statements or just organize them usually?”

Carol just offers up a smile and tries not react to how cold his hand is.
Ok hes probably suspicious, and I have no idea if the “boss” he is referring to is the archivist or the guy that owns the building. But he doesn’t seem like he want to hurt her, or at least not yet. and running away and coming back later is always an option if this goes badly at some point.

“Were better spent away from the others. Needed someone with their full time dedicated to organizing, I guess.”

“What about you? What do you do ‘round here?”
“ shame you spend most your time in the back by yourself, though I suppose at least its peaceful. So your “talents” are organizing?”
Carol follows, looking AJ over while walking just behind him. He seems normal at least visually. Fog and coldness seem pretty normal for this theme-ing of weird she supposes. Either he hasn’t noticed the fog or its normal to him. she should stop staring before he starts feeling it.
She looks at the shelves as they pass, noticing the changes since she was last here.
“ oh me? I’m researching a case. Haven’t had any breakthroughs yet, so I keep an eye on anything new in incase it helps”
AJ hums in response. He does feel her eyes on him, of course he does, but he in all honesty didn’t assume it was her. He scratches at the pinprick-y feeling on the back of his neck. The fog seems to drift wherever he wanders, cascading over the tiled floor like uncomfortably damp carpeting.

Fog drifts about the Archives. Not quite enough to catch one’s eye, just enough to allow unease to creep into your psyche just as it does the shelves of statements. A man stands amongst it, dressed far too casual for an academic institution, though the name tag claiming him to be "A. Fairclough" pinned to his worn-out jacket clearly states he does work here. A light chill ripples through the shelves as he heaves a heavy box off and to the floor, crouching to inspect the contents and audibly groaning when his suspicions of it- and likely the whole section it’s in -not being properly organized.
Busy or not, he is an Institute employee. When he glances up at the sound of someone invading his space wandering towards his area of the Archives, he offers a half-hearted wave.
“Mornin’. You need help looking for a statement, or…?”
Its been a while since Carol has visited the Magnus institute, but its somewhere she always seems to return to .Theres always something new to read or sometimes shes lucky enough to visit when there was something interesting to watch. But today her only goal was to see if any new statements might be helpful to her. she walks past reception and onto the stairs down to the archives without disruption. The lady at the front desk and the staff that walk past are the same as always, none of them register her or her passing them by, the advantages of her condition. Though something shes so used to now she doesn’t spend much time thinking on it. Its easy to feel separated from the world when no one ever acknowledges your part of it.
As she heads down the stairs into the archives, something feels different. She takes of and cleans her glasses on the edge of her jumper and looks again.. no that really was fog? Maybe there was something happening here today after all.
As she steps into the archives shes surprised to see someone she hasn’t seen before. Carol is confused a moment, she wasn’t great with remembering faces, but she’d though after her past visits she at least knew the archive staff. Though she did also visit generally outside working hours.
Carol gets closer , interested in this person she hasn’t see before. He seem different, like others shes seen before, the area around him seems colder.
What she wasn’t expecting, and made her jump slightly. Was when the man suddenly looked towards her , and talked to her.
She looks behind her in confusion. Did someone else come down the stairs after her. But she quickly realizes that no, it was just her and the man here, and he was in fact talking to her.
How was he? Was it the fog? It wasn’t the first time she’d been seen but it was rare enough to started her. Though she tries to regain her composure quickly as the man is probably expecting a reply. What had he asked? A statement right.. “ Oh no, I was just down here to see the more recently archived statements.”
This was ok right?, no way he knows everyone that works in the building. She can just pretend right.

“Yeah, uh.. sorry, did the bossman say you could be down here, or-..?”
He’s still fidgeting with the bit of hair resting on the nape of his neck, mullet too short to really tug on the hair as he likes,
“I don’t recognize you from the archives, I mean. Uh.. if you need help finding the statements, I probably can. Organizing them’s my job, but I’ve barely gotten through, like, a quarter of the work that needs to be done. So they’re kind of. Everywhere. Sorry.”
Confidence, if you act like you belong, most people don’t question it.
“Oh, yeh I’ve got permission to be down here, don’t worry. but no I’m not archive staff. I’m Carol”

“I don’t want to interrupt your work, I wouldn’t want you getting in trouble for not finishing in time. I know my way around well enough, I’ll have a quick look and be on my way.”
He accepts the offered hand, his own an uncomfortable cold. Wisps of fog lick at his ankles.
