Man, Caleb came so far from Episode 12.

In episode 11, the Nein were paid just under 700 gold (and up front!) for their help with the Knights of Requital job. Ulog said the 513 from him was his life’s savings. In episode 9, Caleb had claimed to Jester that 50 gold was more than his parents had made in their lifetime. The Nein just earned lifetimes of gold for one job. And once Fjord catches him stealing the scroll case from the High Richter’s house, Caleb says:

“I’m taking this. This isn’t worth my time. I’m taking this!”

The whole point of the job is to get rid of two corrupt politicians in Zadash. Lord Sutan and the High Richter ruined the lives of innocents, took bribes from the wealthy for leniency and favors, expanded their own influence, and didn’t care about the common people. Anything to increase their own power. Everyone else is either a stepping stone or an obstacle.

“This isn’t worth my time.”

Caleb’s share, already in his pockets, is more than double what his parents had earned before he killed them, and this is not worth his time because he wants the mere possibility of power over anything else. He doesn’t even know what’s in the scroll case! At this point in the story, he does not care about fixing the empire. He’s willing to risk the plan failing—to let corrupt people remain in their seats—as long as he gets what he wants too. He’s just like Lord Sutan and the High Richter. He’s a selfish, corrupt, backstabbing piece of shit. The only change from his time as a Volstrucker is that Caleb is afraid of the Cerberus Assembly rather than loyal to it. No wonder Liam was worried what Matt would do with Caleb if he had decided to leave the party.

And later, in episode 141, we’re going to see a total reversal: Caleb not only refuses to kill Trent Ikithon, he prevents his friends and fellow victims from doing so as well, instead insisting on bringing the Assembly’s corruption to light in the Empire. The goal is to stop the corruption, regardless of what punishment Ikithon or any other Archmages will endure, and the only way to do it is to remove the veil of secrecy. It’s not about the power itself. It’s not even about Ikithon anymore. It’s about ending the collateral damage to common people who cannot oppose those in power.
