Joji- “In Tongues” Review

In tongues by Soundcloud RnB singer and somewhat fucked up Internet cult leader, George Miller is an EP with a stark contrast to his previous songs released under “Joji”. On this EP Miller’s primary subject matter is one of gut-wrenching heartbreak and these songs are a reflection of this. The EP’s lead single “Will He” taps into the idea that while this person he sings of has moved onto someone new he still cares for her and only wants her best interests at heart.

Technically, this EP falls somewhat flat and anti-climatic to that of previous singles such as “I don’t wanna waste my time”. It’s a simple EP with blaring snare drums accompanied by harmonic daunting vocals from Miller and while these vocals work best on tracks like “worldstar money (interlude)” often at times it got a bit repetitive and almost whiney.

By the end of this EP I’m left feeling like I’ve just had a large roast dinner yet still have plenty of room for ice cream. For a 17-minute project you can tell Joji spent lots of time perfecting certain melodies and vocal styles. Yet the repeated use of “trap like” drums and “sadboi” vocals makes this short project feel too limited and similar. Overall, I like this EP, the low-fi guitars on “Pills” “Bitter Fuck” are a welcomed differentaiation to the rest of the EP. I’d give the project a 75% approval rating based off my personal opinion.
