Circuit Scribe - a pen that draws functional electronic circuits instantly.
This is really awesome, like it will be easier to do electronic circuits but I still enjoy doing it on a circuit board and experimenting on it until you get it right. This is good in notebook though. =)))
This is really clever!
Baking is methodical: Every measurement is precise, so you need to concentrate on only the baking when youāre doing it - in turn, clearing your head.
Baking takes time: If you dedicate yourself to this activity, youāre setting time aside for yourself indirectly. Therefore creating a safe space where no-one can bother you. This is of course, when youāre like me and you kick everyone else out of the kitchen.
Baking is relaxing: When have you not appreciated the scent of fresh baked cookies in your living space? Really.
Baking is satisfying: Cookie dough? Check. Actual cookies? Check. Letās be real, sometimes you need to eat your feelings.
Baking is motivational: You canāt just sit and wallow in whatever youāre stressed about when youāre baking. You have 10 minute intervals to sit and contemplate life, the world and everything. (the answer will always be 42 - props if you get this reference)
Baking is satisfying (pt 2): For me, my coworkers adore it when Iām stressed. Not in the āhaha, Rhiannonās life is hard right nowā kind of sense, but more the āsweet, I got unexpected breakfast AND dessert in the same day.ā
Baking is deceiving: I think Iām an anomaly. I donāt really watch TV, I play video games (when Iām not baking/working) and Iām not a huge fan of cooking. Last night, I made macaroni and cheese, strawberry muffins and monster cookies. Tonight I made my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. It makes people think that Iām on speed, because no one else can āfind the time to bake.ā Itās really that I donāt really have a lot of hobbies. There, now you know.
Baking is productive: Baking gives you the ability to not only scientifically and mathematically massage your brain, but see a finished product. Hopefully you remembered to put both cups of flour in (speaking from experience here).
Baking is exercise: Okay, so maybe Iām a little biased here, but for me, I try really hard not to use my mixer when I donāt have to, and I remember even as a kid, when you get a good cookie dough going, it gets tough to mix after a while. Reaching for ingredients? Or the fact that youāre probably standing while youāre mixing all these ingredients. Point being: at least youāre not sitting doing nothing. See reason #5.
Baking is good: This blog has brought me a lot of joy, and whenever I feel like Iām less of a person, or like all the effort Iām putting into the things Iām doing is amounting to nothing, Iāll look to this blog for visible proof that Iāve grown and evolved over the past three years, and my followers here appreciate when I post new recipes for them to hate me for making and not giving to them personally. Sorry guys, you know Iād totally bake for all of you! ;)Ā
Bake it out guys.Ā <3 bakerhi

In 2013 women are passing men in the number of college graduates and make up at least 47% of the work force. Yet we still lag behind in STEM fields. Why? Ā Gender bias is real.Ā
There are three main parts to this issue
1. The misconception that boys are naturally better at math. This has been proven time and time again to be false. This mindset discourages girls from pursuing STEM related degrees. Simply telling girls that there is no difference in abilities can impact test scores. As does encouraging women to see math prowess not as an inherent trait, but as a skill that can be practiced and mastered.Ā
2. The culture in college STEM fields is a deterrent to women. The stereotype that STEM majors are obsessive reclusive men, is false. Active recruiting of women, planned social meetings, and women to women mentoring programs solve some of this issue.Ā
3. STEM careers are heavily male-dominated and not family friendly. Lack of insurance for post docs and lack of time off for maternal leave deters new trainees. Because of the lack of women in these fields there are less connections that new women can gain. Improving family leave, creating new networks for women, and changing the image of scientists can all help to change this trend.
YES. Yes yesyesyesyesyessssss. Required watching for anyone who gives a damn about the future of science.
This captures so many levels of the STEM gender bias issue, from elementary school to faculty hiring. Thereās lots of problems to solve, and it takes more than just telling young girls that they can do it. They need real, involvedĀ mentorship and practical role models. Julia captures the important first step here:
"We have to actively challenge the stereotypes weāve grown up with.ā
I would love to someday get to work on stuff like this..
Grilled mac and cheese wedges dunked in shots of tomato soup. Someone out there likes me.
Wireless devices go battery-free with ambient backscatter
Ambient BackscatterĀ transforms existing wireless signals into both a source of power and a communication medium. It enables two battery-free devices to communicate by backscattering existing wireless signals. Backscatter communication is orders of magnitude more power-efficient than traditional radio communication. Further, since it leverages the ambient RF signals that are already around us, it does not require a dedicated power infrastructure as in RFID.
The researchers tested the ambient backscatter technique with credit card-sized prototype devices placed within several feet of each other. For each device the researchers built antennas into ordinary circuit boards that flash an LED light when receiving a communication signal from another device.
Groups of the devices were tested in a variety of settings in the Seattle area, including inside an apartment building, on a street corner and on the top level of a parking garage. These locations ranged from less than half a mile away from a TV tower to about 6.5 miles away.
They found that the devices were able to communicate with each other, even the ones farthest from a TV tower. The receiving devices picked up a signal from their transmitting counterparts at a rate of 1 kilobit per second when up to 2.5 feet apart outdoors and 1.5 feet apart indoors. This is enough to send information such as a sensor reading, text messages and contact information.

I just adore this photo. They both look soooo comfy.
i think iāve hit my limit on how many different things iām going to do with this technique right now. i made a few cards to go with my gifts. i have to say i that even though iāve hit my limit for now i do really like them on paper.
{there are 2 canvases i havenāt posted yet because theyāre gifts for fellow tumblrs. one goes in the mail tomorrow, one is being given sunday.}Ā
