"How did we get here?"

Ezra blinked behind his mask, the chill of snow seeping into his back. 

How had they got there?

It was unlike Ezra to be caught by surprise but his memory felt extremely foggy and the sluggishness in his limbs suggested drugging. Clumsily hefting his body upright he turned to look at Kyrize, the snow clinging to the Aurin's fuzzy ears.

"My m-m-emory is not cooper-per-ating at this time, but we appear to be-e-e in Whitevale..." He grumbled, his voice modulator stuttering a bit due to the poor functionality of his numb mouth.

Searching through his coat, Ezra conjured up his datachron. To Ezra's dismay however, no amount of tapping or shaking could bring the device back to life. "At times such as these... I desire The Eternity."

Loyalty can make or break your character(s) depending on who they decide to lay down their lives for. Who or what is your character loyal towards, and why? Their faction (Dominion/Exile)? Themselves? Their friends? Their boss? What would they do if they lost respect for that person/ideal?

With the recent loss of The Eternity, Ezra loyalty lies only with himself currently.

Ezra is someone who needs to always be protecting something or someone. As such, once he finds something to protect, his loyalties shift to that particular thing.

This attitude stems from the fact that Ezra is not afraid of dying and would welcome the release from his emotionless life. Without anyone to protect, he must default to protecting himself.

By focusing on protecting himself, Ezra essentially guarantees himself a longer life of decay and apathy.

"I will not lose this ship!" - Ezra, moments before losing the ship.

"I always said that the ship was the only thing I had. Watching it destroyed before my eyes confirmed that statement. I am alone, with nothing.

I commend the others for trying to band together and showing their loyalty but I cannot stay with them. I failed in my duty as Quartermaster and therefore no longer deserve that role.

It is my fault anyway. I brought those Eldan artifacts on board, containing the Caretaker AI. I set the events in motion that would lead to the eradication of an orphanage and the destruction of my ship. I have never been so ashamed.

I thought, hoped even, that I could protect my home this time, that I would have the power to defeat any threat to it.

I was wrong and now I must find my own path..."

Kyrize recalled what he felt when he had come across Jagger following the man’s return, as well as the suspicion thrown at him from the Captain. He scowled through his recollections, then looked away from Ezra and pinned his ears tight against his hair. “Yeah, by shooting an unnarmed Aurin,” he countered with a growl.

"He didn’t have to die because of what he did, and not without hearing his side of the story, but they didn’t bother with it. They shot first." His tail continued lashing uneasily behind him as he spoke, the scowl deepening. "Or maybe I’ve seen too many of my kin killed on Arboria and I’m overreacting because of my emotions."

He sucked in a breath and looked around the hallway, squaring his shoulders in silent thought. The scowl gave way to a pensive frown, and his ears remained pinned. “You talk about ‘removing a threat’ but Abacus was a living creature..I guess I just don’t go around killing people as easily as the crew of the Eternity does. Like mercenaries.”

"Your people talk about Arboria like tragedy is unique to you and other cultures should suppress themselves to suit you. I am tired of hearing it. Stop dwelling on it, stop using it as an excuse for everything you do. This is Nexus, and it is very often kill or be killed, neither I or the Captain are interested in what reasons Abacus had for what he did."

Ezra remained as impassive as ever, “But, if I had to guess, he justified it because Silas is a Cassian and all Cassians are evil, right? That is how most Aurin perceive the Dominion, correct?”

For the first time, Ezra’s face looked angry, but it was likely just acting to force his point. “You would make a perfect mindless soldier with that mentality, easy to manipulate and control. I am no puppet master so I won’t exploit that, but others would.”

His face softened somewhat, “None of us are saints Kyrize, least of all myself, but The Eternity is all I and the Captain have, do not hate us for defending it with lethal force.”

Kyrize stared at Ezra in silence and maintained his scowl as he mulled over the man’s words. His upper lip curled derisively and he shook his head in disappointment. “You think all the Aurin do that, dwell on Arboria and trample on the feelings of others?”

He expelled a dry chuckle and thumped his tail on the floor next to his boot. “And I don’t see how I would make a ‘good, mindless soldier’ because I’m questioning the decisions of my officers and their mindless, reactive need to murder.”

"After Jagger and I settled our differences I saw him as someone I needed to protect to make up for what I did. We became friends, even. Good friends. He’s the one I confide in—maybe I am confusing you more, huh, Exile?" He growled, glancing back at Ezra from the wall.

"I have my reasons not to support the kill or be killed mentality you people keep spitting, as if that justifies killing a little termite because one side of the conflict was favoured more than the other.”

"How Abacus justifies what he did, we won’t know, now. It’s too late to thread together a real story," he finished his tirade with a sigh and looked away to reflect upon his thoughts.

“I was naive.”

"It’s a common trend, to lament the loss of Arboria as a way of validating themselves in addition to possibly invalidating others. It is not an all encompassing fact but it is a trend that I find tiresome and weak.”

Ezra huffed seeing Kyrize’s agitation increase, “You have a strange way of questioning our decisions; avoiding me entirely destroys any hope of conversation and leaves you questioning little more than the demons in your own head.” Ezra’s dreads clinked again as he moved off the wall and stretched his neck.

"I am not an Exile, referring to me as such will quickly earn my animosity and our communication will cease here. I would rather we remained at least civil towards each other, since it seems we do not see eye to eye on certain matters." He placed his gaze on Kyrize and let out a dry, mechanical breath.

"Take this as you will, but you already know that my interests lie solely with The Eternity. That is the side upon which I stand and it always will be so long as The Eternity continues to fly. You are a part of The Eternity and therefore someone I am prepared lay down what is left of my life to protect," He offered his hand as a peace offering, "I won’t apologize for the decisions I make protecting my home. Were I in Ranjana or the Captain’s position, I would have taken the shot as well."

Kyrize flicked one ear towards the Mordesh as a sign that he was paying attention while his eyes wandered. Despite his pinned ears and lashing tail, his expression drained itself of anger and exchanged it for resignation.

"I needed and took the time to calm down and think over things, Ezra," he explained, adding, "and sorry for calling you an Exile." Gold eyes returned to the Mordesh, and studied him and the extended hand in thought.

He furrowed his brows in puzzlement at the gesture and reached out to take the hand. Was it a handshake? He wasn’t sure. “Well…I understand why they did it, but I’ll never agree or accept what happened.”

A thought came back to him, and he frowned as he looked up at Ezra’s face. “I still have to talk to the Captain about it. He pretended he knew nothing about it when I told him I had heard Abacus was dead. I want to know why he lied.”

Ezra gently squeezed the Aurin’s hand and let go, the friendly gesture a contrast to his ever dour features. "I cannot speak for the Captain on why he would lie… deceptiveness is not a trait I share with him…"

His fingers reached for the ring hanging from his neck and he paused in his thoughts. “His extended absence concerns me, to the point I suspect something has happened… but that is for me to deal with, not the crew.”

Ezra returned his attention to Kyrize, “While we are still communicating, is there anything else that should be brought to my attention? I am willing to listen and provide my honest thoughts if necessary.”

Kyrize nodded and took on an expression of relief at Ezra’s statement that spoke of his skeptical view of the crew. He looked away again and lowered his ears as the Mordesh continued, exhaling through his nose.

"Maybe he’s just on a really long mission, or personal business?" He suggested, trying to reclaim an air of positivity.

The tip of his tail lifted from the ground and swung lazily behind him in thought before he shook his head. “Nothing Eternity bus—oh! I met Sindra already. It was at an Aurin gathering, and by accident, but I you won’t have to escort me.”

Ezra huffed in thought before taking on a more curious expression, "Do you consider her trustworthy, or is too early to make a judgement?"

He caught his breath for a moment and grunted, "Though I suppose it is shameless for me to ask that, when I am unsure if you consider me trustworthy."

Kyrize recalled what he felt when he had come across Jagger following the man’s return, as well as the suspicion thrown at him from the Captain. He scowled through his recollections, then looked away from Ezra and pinned his ears tight against his hair. “Yeah, by shooting an unnarmed Aurin,” he countered with a growl.

"He didn’t have to die because of what he did, and not without hearing his side of the story, but they didn’t bother with it. They shot first." His tail continued lashing uneasily behind him as he spoke, the scowl deepening. "Or maybe I’ve seen too many of my kin killed on Arboria and I’m overreacting because of my emotions."

He sucked in a breath and looked around the hallway, squaring his shoulders in silent thought. The scowl gave way to a pensive frown, and his ears remained pinned. “You talk about ‘removing a threat’ but Abacus was a living creature..I guess I just don’t go around killing people as easily as the crew of the Eternity does. Like mercenaries.”

Ezra loomed over Kyrize, his face a scowling statue of permanent disdain. He found a wall to prop himself against and kept his blank silver eyes on the Aurin.

"Trust," He grunted mechanically, "That theoretical concept where others could come to believe in you."

Ezra scratched at his face, scraping away dead green flakes. “That you would assist them in a time of need.” 

He closed his eyes for a moment, opening them again after a careful breath. “You have been fleetingly present on the ship and perhaps, if I may say, avoiding me, even when we do cross paths. Even now, your eyes are searching for escape.”

With cold delivery he narrowed his eyes at Kyrize. “How do you expect me to trust that?”

Kyrize relaxed when the Mordesh stepped away and watched him until he settled comfortably against the wall. His eyes returned to the PDA, flicking over the screen thoughtfully, before he slipped it back into the pocket of his jacket.

He looked back at Ezra with a bland smile, though the tips of his ears were drooping and his tail low. “WELL, Ezra,” he began with his usual chipperness, “I’ve been busy finding my way around Nexus.”

His hands slipped into his pockets and he rocked back on his heels in a restless habit picked up recently. “Meeting other Aurin, hunting, working on my skyplot, learning things…”

The last words were spoken in a quieter, hesitant tone, but he carried on, gaze elsewhere, “especially about trust, you know. Who you trust depends entirely on you, doesn’t it?”

Ezra’s dreads clinked against the wall as he turned his head to gaze off far ahead. “Can’t say I agree. Trust comes with many mutually beneficial boons, but requires both parties make effort to show they are worth the investment of faith,” his hand moved to the ring hanging around his neck, “I would like to think I am trustworthy, but perhaps I am fooling myself.”

His gaze moved back to Kyrize, “Finding your way around Nexus. How very vague and deceptively innocent,” His scowl deepens as he continues, “But an innocent doesn’t seek escape from me at every encounter. What are you hiding?”

Kyrize stopped rocking and set his feet flat on the floor, with his hands remaining in his pockets. The corners of his mouth relaxed out of their false smile, and he sighed. A direct question he didn’t know how to escape.

"A lack of faith, I guess," he answered vaguely as his ears fell. Gold eyes returned to Ezra, and he lowered his brows. "I found out what happened to Abacus."

"You did, hmm?" Ezra murmured, almost uncaring, "I suppose you resent, hate, perhaps fear, Ranjana and the Captain for that?"

Ezra huffed to himself, “It was my understanding that Abacus confessed to the kidnapping and torture of Silas,” he kept a careful eye on Kyrize trying to read his reaction, “And as a result, Ranjana took it upon herself to remove that threat to The Eternity.”

Folding his arms Ezra continued, “I am not sure if you expected us to forgive and forget such a disgusting act of racially charged brutality so permit me to feel a little confused by your behaviour.”

Ezra’s scowl deepened, “Or have you been given a different version of events?”

Kyrize kept his eyes on the Mordesh as he explained what he already knew, ears flattening even more against his head. He did have more of the story - it was far more complicated - but he hesitated to spill the beans.

"The Cassian wasn’t murdered. Killing Abacus was too extreme! I thought the Exiles had laws. Why is there a court in Thayd if no one is going to use it!? What gives them the right to make that choice? To kill someone,” he growled, tail lashing and thumping behind him as he riled up. “It wasn’t even in self-defence!”

Ezra's brow raised, "Perhaps you should see it from our perspective? What gave him the right to kidnap and torture Silas?" 

He shook his head, appalled he had to explain this. "Who do you really think the courts would side with, the turncoat Cassian and a crew of pseudo-mercenaries, or the bartending Aurin?" Ezra huffed, "I might add that if Abacus had not confessed, he would never have been caught, we had no proof."

Ezra pointed at Kyrize, "So knowing that, what would you have done in our place? I'm interested to hear what you have to say on the matter since you seem fully prepared to isolate yourself from the crew because of it."

Ezra loomed over Kyrize, his face a scowling statue of permanent disdain. He found a wall to prop himself against and kept his blank silver eyes on the Aurin.

"Trust," He grunted mechanically, "That theoretical concept where others could come to believe in you."

Ezra scratched at his face, scraping away dead green flakes. “That you would assist them in a time of need.” 

He closed his eyes for a moment, opening them again after a careful breath. “You have been fleetingly present on the ship and perhaps, if I may say, avoiding me, even when we do cross paths. Even now, your eyes are searching for escape.”

With cold delivery he narrowed his eyes at Kyrize. “How do you expect me to trust that?”

Kyrize relaxed when the Mordesh stepped away and watched him until he settled comfortably against the wall. His eyes returned to the PDA, flicking over the screen thoughtfully, before he slipped it back into the pocket of his jacket.

He looked back at Ezra with a bland smile, though the tips of his ears were drooping and his tail low. “WELL, Ezra,” he began with his usual chipperness, “I’ve been busy finding my way around Nexus.”

His hands slipped into his pockets and he rocked back on his heels in a restless habit picked up recently. “Meeting other Aurin, hunting, working on my skyplot, learning things…”

The last words were spoken in a quieter, hesitant tone, but he carried on, gaze elsewhere, “especially about trust, you know. Who you trust depends entirely on you, doesn’t it?”

Ezra’s dreads clinked against the wall as he turned his head to gaze off far ahead. “Can’t say I agree. Trust comes with many mutually beneficial boons, but requires both parties make effort to show they are worth the investment of faith,” his hand moved to the ring hanging around his neck, “I would like to think I am trustworthy, but perhaps I am fooling myself.”

His gaze moved back to Kyrize, “Finding your way around Nexus. How very vague and deceptively innocent,” His scowl deepens as he continues, “But an innocent doesn’t seek escape from me at every encounter. What are you hiding?”

Kyrize stopped rocking and set his feet flat on the floor, with his hands remaining in his pockets. The corners of his mouth relaxed out of their false smile, and he sighed. A direct question he didn’t know how to escape.

"A lack of faith, I guess," he answered vaguely as his ears fell. Gold eyes returned to Ezra, and he lowered his brows. "I found out what happened to Abacus."

"You did, hmm?" Ezra murmured, almost uncaring, "I suppose you resent, hate, perhaps fear, Ranjana and the Captain for that?"

Ezra huffed to himself, "It was my understanding that Abacus confessed to the kidnapping and torture of Silas," he kept a careful eye on Kyrize trying to read his reaction, "And as a result, Ranjana took it upon herself to remove that threat to The Eternity."

Folding his arms Ezra continued, "I am not sure if you expected us to forgive and forget such a disgusting act of racially charged brutality so permit me to feel a little confused by your behaviour."

Ezra's scowl deepened, "Or have you been given a different version of events?"

Names are a pretty significant part of your character(s). What made you choose the name you did for your character(s)? Was there research involved? Did you just mash letters together until you came up with something that sounded cool?

Hm. Ezra Lance...

I actually came up with it before I realized the Mordesh naming conventions, however I stuck with it because... well, primarily because I don't think 'Ezra' isn't too far-fetched a name to have and... okay, time to go proper long-winded on this one.

HOW I GO ABOUT NAMING MY CHARACTERS.

STEP 1: PICK A RACE.

STEP 2: MASH LETTERS TOGETHER AND/OR RESEARCH NAMING CONVENTIONS

STEP 3: MAKE A CHARACTER AROUND THAT NAME!

Now, looking at my three-step guide to naming my mind-children, I must look utterly insane.

Fact is I take my names super seriously and I know for 100% fact, names are a huge factor in the personality of a character. Don't ask me for the science just roll with it.

'Ezra Lance' sums up a lot of what Ezra is to me, but I can break it down into just two examples of his character.

'Ezra' is a short, two syllable name, two vowels, two consonants. Straight to the point and rigid, much like Ezra.

'Lance' is a weapon. Need I say more? He's dangerous and more or less a tool to be utilized at the Captain's whim.

I could go deeper but you get the idea.
