Anita Ekberg by Milton H. Greene, 1951. Anita was newly arrived to the U.S. at this point, in the country to represent Sweden in the Miss Universe pageant. As one of the six runners-up, she was awarded a film contract with Universal Studios. Later stating that she was "spoiled by the studio system", she accepted her weekly paycheck but often skipped her studio acting, dancing and elocution classes to go horseback riding in the Hollywood Hills instead, prompting Universal to declare her "hopeless" and drop her contract six months later. She eventually found success in Hollywood in the films Artists and Models (1955) and War and Peace (1956), going on to become an international sensation following her iconic performance in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita in 1960, playing a version of herself in the character of Sylvia Rank, a glamorous, statuesque, willful Swedish-American actress visiting Rome.
