#right, so before james ruined this little moment with hisĀ āhalf-manā barb (which was delivered more comically than spitefully), i was really riveted by the dynamic at play here #how james purposefully lay down on the bed, almost beckoning to godfrey #how he basically offered his hand to him, because if you watch the scene carefully itās james who truly initiates this interaction #itās fascinating how james uses tenderness to appeal to godfrey but at the critical moment, he distances himself so as not to be drawn inĀ #and he closes his eyes to allow godfrey the privacy of this fragile connection

One thing in Tom Hardyās Taboo premiere episode has really stuck with me. Ā I know some have issues with his casting and I am not going to tell you how to feel about that. Ā I donāt believe any art in this world is without issues, but you can make up your own mind.
However, I think the creative team has included some nice parts in the writing concerning the racial climate of the period. Ā And this is why (aside from the obvious fact that James K Delaney is clearly not here to support his countryās racist, colonist, and imperialist speech or action. I donāt think a racist group of people would write that story. Ā Itās very clear who the evil ones are):
In the scene where James shares a night cap brandy with his butler Brace (an unheard of thing back then; master and servant sharing a drink) and the old man mentions his mothers name as āAnnaā ā- you can see the narrowed look in James eyes immediately. Ā Tom Hardy scowl at itās best.
And then he IMMEDIATELY CORRECTS the servant regarding his motherās ACTUAL name. Ā Ā And I apologize, I know itās an āsā sound but I cannot fully remember. Ā But this is IMPORTANT!! Ā Ā NO she was NOT from Naples! Ā NO her name is NOT Anna. Ā She was from Nootka Sound. Ā Her name is _____!
James essentially gives his mother her identity back by saying such things aloud. Ā By not allowing the lie to continue. Ā I tell you right now ā James is not here to play, and he will have none of your assimilation/keeping secrets buried because youāre a racist asshat bullshit. Ā
I agree, I was actually impressed that he respected her in that way.
Beautiful insight. Loved that scene and happy to see the natives of the pacific coast represented.
As jane-yellowrock said, James says his motherās name is Salish. One of the Taboo synopses explained that his mother was a Salish woman (of the Coast Salish peoples) included in his fatherās purchase of Nootka Sound. I thought James saying āher name is Salishā served as a kind of shorthand to inform Brace that he knows his motherās real history (and thus his fatherās). You make a great point that by naming her actual background he gives her back her identity. I think doing this also serves to reclaim her culture as a part of himself. So heās acknowledging his own identity as well?

Taboo interview for The New York Times ~
Tom Hardy Is at Home as Hero and Villain in āTabooā
āI donāt fit into a box,ā the actor Tom Hardy said. āItās not a statement of childish immaturity; I donāt.ā
It was easy to believe him. As stars go, Mr. Hardy is less containable than most. On a recent wintry afternoon at the Ritz-Carlton hotel overlooking Central Park, Mr. Hardyās tattooed biceps only just lodged inside his tight black T-shirt and his legs spilled over the arm of the puffy gold chair where he sat sometimes spooning up chicken soup, sometimes sucking on an e-cigarette. His quick, confounding mind leapt from one association to another at turbocharged speed.
Best known for characters like Bane in āThe Dark Knight Rises,ā John Fitzgerald in āThe Revenant,ā Bill Sikes and Heathcliff in the television adaptations of āOliver Twistā and āWuthering Heights,ā and the title role in āMad Max: Fury Road,ā Mr. Hardy has a particular line on villains who might be heroes, heroes who might be villains and several masked men.
Now heās originating a category-defying role of his own in āTaboo,ā an adventure tale he put together with the producer and director Ridley Scott; the screenwriter Steven Knight; and his own father, the writer Chips Hardy. (It begins on Jan. 10 on FX.) Mr. Hardy plays James Keziah Delaney, a man long thought dead, who returns to England from Africa in 1814 with a sack of diamonds and a plan to exact revenge on the British East India Company.
Mr. Hardy spoke about his influences for the show; his beard; and why he wonāt gallop on horseback. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

You and your father began developing āTabooā nine years ago?
Iād just played Bill Sikes in āOliver Twist.ā I thought, wouldnāt it be nice to have a Bill Sikes who was well-spoken? Maybe he could be like Heathcliff. With a little bit of Hannibal Lecter, a little bit of Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps also some Oedipus. And then maybe a little bit of Jack the Ripper. And imagine he was a restitution agent and ex-army and had come back and was now irredeemable in society. And my dad said, āTom, this is an awful lot to put into one character,ā and he sent me out of the room. About a year later, he came back to me with a treatment heād written.
How does the East India Company get involved?
Well, they were around at the time. We were looking for something that reflected global corporatization ā J. P. Morgan, Monsanto sort of territory. Some historians are quite upset that we tried to vilify a great establishment.
Tell me about James Delaney.
We wanted to kind of create a modern story, some new writing, which felt like it had come from a book that hadnāt been found 100 years ago and then see what we could do without any dragons or C.G.I. James Delaney is an explorer, a Machiavellian sort of type. He should run the gamut from heinous to noble. Heās gone so far through barbarousness and savagery that heās come out the other end.
How did you prepare for the role?
I really think about acting in two different parts. Thereās convincing and not convincing acting. Convincing acting is about hustle and the flow of narrative of what do I want and what am I going to do in order to get it, and the energy transition between two actors or more. And then thereās camouflage, the creation of silhouette and disguise, whether you use putty nose or whether youāre slightly subtler.
So what did you do for Delany?
Nothing. Iād spent nine years talking about him. I did maybe 5 percent acting on the show, most of it was running around, working with heads of department, marketing. I didnāt have time to do any acting. The hat helps and the scars.
And his really bad haircut.
In that time, people used to have their hair in a certain way that emulated the statues from the Roman days, the Greek days. His hair looks like a horse has chewed it. It just looks bad. So for me itās defiance.
Did you learn to ride for āTabooā?
My horse was called Rusty. Anybody could ride him. Heās brilliant. I learned very minimal riding. Not galloping.
Really? You do so many of your own stunts.
I fell off a horse when I was a kid.
You have several shirtless scenes. Was it a trick to cover up your own tattoos?
It took about two hours. We had to cover over my tattoos and apply the Ashanti tattoos as well. We called it Naked Monday. I was getting naked in the Thames, walking around the Thames in various parks 30 miles from London, banking as many shots as we could possibly use for dream sequences and stuff like that. Not enough of it has made the final cut compared to how cold it was. January in London was cold.
This is in some ways a revenge story. Do you think of yourself as a vengeful person?
I donāt forget things. But no, not really. Nothing, thankfully, has ever happened to me which would cause me to exact or to wish to exact a revenge.
You have such a pretty face āā
So do you.
Well, Iām not always on film hiding it behind a mask or under a hat.
I think as a youngster, when I started acting, there was a pressure to be or look a certain way ā a six-pack, straight teeth, tan. Thatās just not going to be a constant that I could ever maintain. Iām a bit wonky. Even if I had a pretty face, I couldnāt capitalize on that. Thatās not where my heart is.
I do like a beard as well. Not that my whole life comes down to beards and tattoos, but there is a certain level of yeah, Iāve got something you want, so Iām going to deface it. Or maybe Iām incredibly vulnerable, so if I look like this maybe youāll leave me alone. Perhaps that, too.
