Summary: The Duke of Northumberlandâs coup against Mary Tudor failed and his son Robert has been thrown in the Tower for his role in helping his father. Over a year after his imprisonment, Queen Mary allows his wife Amy to visit him. Husband and wife reunite and find that they may no longer be the same people they once were when they first married.
And Amy cannot shake off the feeling that there might be a third person in this marriage.

To the comment in the notes: Elizabeth also didnât originally want to execute Mary. In fact she literally wanted to do anything else other than that. Executing Mary distressed her so much that she fell ill because she knew the precedent it would set. And I donât know why people get precious about the fact that Elizabeth didnât âtreat Mary nicelyâ - Mary had actively schemed to get Elizabethâs throne in the past and continued to do so despite the guise of âsisterhood.â Elizabeth had no reason to like or trust her. And I would argue that Mary Stuart was far more of a threat to Elizabeth than Jane Grey was to Mary I.
As for Elizabeth supposadly being cruel to her female relatives she almost always had a reason for it. Katherine and Mary Grey flouted her authority by marrying without permission (and Katherine in particular made a dangerous move since she was in the line of succession and her husband was also related to Elizabeth). And for all this âcruelty towards her female relativesâ we also have ample evidence of her loving them. Catherine Carey was one of her closest friends and she loved her fiercely. She was close to and was kind to many of her favoured women as well. Funny how people always ignore this side of Elizabeth.
Also sorry but Mary I wasnât âforcedâ to do anything. If Elizabeth wasnât forced to execute Mary Stuart then Mary I wasnt âforcedâ to execute Jane. All monarchs are reponsible for their actions. But if weâre going to claim that Mary I was forced to execute Jane then Iâm sorry, you have to claim the same for Elizabeth and if you do, then Mary I doesnât come off well here. Elizabeth was under pressure for literal decades to execute Mary Stuart. Mary I caved and excecuted Jane after a few months.
So no, demonising Elizabeth and excusing Mary for making the same political decisions still makes no sense.

Itâs the moment Jane is told she will be queen (at Whitehall although it really should be Syon House ⌠they seem to use Whitehall as a catch-all setting). Interestingly theyâre taking the angle that Jane may have had queenly ambitions which is ⌠interesting. Not a take I agree with to be honest. I donât think Jane had any aspiration to be queen but once the responsibility was foisted on her, she assumed that role as best she could. So not a complete passive pawn (she already asserted her will in those first few days re: not having Guildford crowned) but not ambitious from the get go either.
Anya Reiss seems to prescribe to that particular brand of feminism that wants to project agency onto historical women in moments when they realistically had very little. Elizabeth was never in control or had the upper hand over Thomas Seymour except when she was refusing him. Thereâs no evidence that Jane secretly wanted to be queen. As bitter of a pill it is to swallow, oftentimes in history women were victims and had no say in what was happening to them. Itâs weird that this (somewhat banal imo) thought has seemed to fallen out of vogue. Better, I think, to emphasis the little agency they WOULD have had in that situation ie: Elizabeth keeping Seymour at arms length and protecting herself on her own and Jane calling the shots once the crown was metaphorically on her head - not before.
Also Amy being there but not Robert is ⌠a choice lol. Then again this is the end of the first episode so maybe there would have been a scene with them speaking beforehand and Robert tells her to go in his stead (for whatever reason) and report back to him? Realistically Amy almost certainly wasnât there but I understand Anya wanting to give her more visibility. Wonder if she was setting up a future scene where Amy would tell Robert what happened and heâs just gobsmacked and is like âbut ⌠what about Elizabeth?â Cue the hairline cracks in their marriage.
I guess weâll never know though, huh? đ
