Stop Trying To Defeat Racism With Logic
There's a black samurai in the new Assassin's Creed game, and it has made some people mad. You simply don't have to argue about it.
The new Assassinās Creed game stars what appears to be a black samurai, which is cool. Anyone who tries to argue is just not worth your time
The new Assassinās Creed game is set in feudal Japan, which is cool. It stars what appears to be a female ninja and a black samurai based on the historical figure Yasuke, which is also cool. Anyone who tries to argue about whether or not thatās cool is just not worth your time. In case you havenāt been paying attention for the last ten or twenty years, video game culture tends to be a repository for the most tedious people on Earth. You know the typeāthese are the kinds of people who donāt consider mobile games to be āreal games,ā or who harass women who use their mics in online multiplayer games, or who argue about āhistorical accuracyā in a video game that has dragons or elves in it. These kinds of people show up in a lot of nerdy hobbies, like tabletop gaming or whatever it is people do on Letterboxd or even enjoying Greek and Roman history. From the moment that the key art for Assassinās Creed Shadows depicted a black man in samurai garb, I knew that this particular brand of person was going to get ripshit mad. Just look at the replies to this tweet. Itās absolute nonsense in there.Ā The most amusing replies are the ones that take into question the, of course, historical accuracy of this character. It may be tempting to try to argue with these people, for a lot of reasons, most of all that history and facts are on your side. This character appears to be based on Yasuke, a real guy who actually existed in the historical record. He was an African retainer for warlord Oda Nobunaga, meaning that he was indeed a samurai. Yasuke is a well known enough figure that heās the subject of a Netflix anime that is named after him. Heās also a character in Nioh, which was developed by the Japanese studio Team Ninja. You can repeat those facts until youāre blue in the face to people who are determined to be angry about a black man having a leading role in this game, but it wonāt matter. You should just save your breath and look forward to seeing whether or not Ubisoft fumbles this very easy layup. Racism isnāt a logical position, so you cannot defeat it with logic. Facts just donāt matter to a racist, especially not the tedious kind of racist who makes their home in video game culture. There will always be a new hair to split, a new way for this kind of person to object to a black man being in this video game. You can bring up the other fantabulous aspects of the Assassinās Creed franchise that clash with history: the existence of the titular Creed and the Knights Templar; whatever the fuck was going on with the Apples of Eden; the seriesā depiction of Karl Marx as a devotee of democracy rather than advocating for an armed revolution of the proletariat. It does not matter because the people who are mad about this have already made up their mind.Ā To them, Japan is a place that does not and has never had black people live there or make their homes there at any point in timeāespecially in history. The anger about āhistorical accuracyā is just a slightly more reasonable smokescreen for their real objection: having to see a black person at all. Unfortunately, blackness and black people have always been inescapable, both now and in the past. Iām not going anywhere, and I wonāt be dragged into an argument about the value of my very existence.
friendly reminder: hofas is a crescent city book, not an acotar book. the focus is on the cc characters, plot, and journey. acotar characters may be making a cameo and play some part in it, but it is not about them. whatever will happen will not be about them but about bryce and co. don't go into it expecting answers or you'll be judging the book in a negative light for the wrong reasons.
Tharion Ketos and Ithan Holstrom share a single brain cell, but neither of them has it. Who knows where it is? Not them, thatās for sure.

Jesiba: *does something*
Apollion :
Ithan, Flynn, Declan and Tharion all share one braincell between them, and it's most commonly used by Dec (who only has it because he borrowed it from his boyfriend Marc, the only one with any common sense). Ithan's only ever used it once. Tharion has never used it ever.
Ember telling Nesta that she will find her way just breaks my fucking heart because the first half of the book is all Nesta in her element, doing as she pleases with her bestie Azriel, still doing whatās in the best interest of her family and just truly being her absolute best self and then the SECOND sheās back in the IC dynamic Ember is just watching her get berated for making a decision that we all know Feyre would also make. Like clearly Nesta expressed to Ember her turmoil over all of this and it makes me want to hug her and also slap Cassian.
Itās so tragic to see the dichotomy in one book of Nesta at her absolute best killing a fucking Asteri and then she goes HOME and ⦠that ā¦
I just ⦠I have to dream that thereās something else for Nesta. A real home. Real acceptance.
luciens thoughts during the second trial:
Elain: I feel like doing something stupid
Lucien: I'm stupid, do me
Remember that one time that Feyre and Lucien were fleeing the Spring Court and they got to the doors. Feyre was all āI canāt go to summer šā and Lucien was like ābut dood, our other choice is Autumn.ā And then her selfish ass was like āAutumn or bust! Lolz š ā
And Lucien still went with her knowing there was a price on his head just as much as Feyreās in the Summer Court.
And SJM still gave him the dumbest line ever when he tells Feyre sheās a better friend to him than he was to her.
Can we retcon this because I canāt keep explaining it as Lucien being self deprecatingā¦
youād think Lucien murdered little kittens and puppies the way that some people in this fandom talk about him.
I agree he wasnāt the greatest friend to Feyre but you guys forget that Tamlin didnāt just abuse her, he abused Lucien too for god knows how long.
We see this through him pulling rank over Lucien, when he hit Lucien with a force of power so strong that it shook the house (after Lucien had begged Tamlin to let Feyre train), Lucien coming to Solstice beaten and bruised, etc.
And all of his responses in ACOMAF and the start of ACOWAR were exactly what an abuse victim would say and do, especially because Lucien was trying to keep the peace and keep SC together. Feyre had Rhysand and the rest of the IC help her to realize that what Tamlin was doing to her was wrong, but Lucien hasnāt had anyone else but Tamlin for decades, possibly centuries.
This doesnāt excuse his actions (or lack thereof) in ACOMAF-ACOWAR but it does offer an explanation of it and Iām sorry, but itās rather stupid to ignore the abuse Lucien faced.
Lucien has been hiding how powerful he is all along.
First of all, excuse my shitty photos.
When it comes to our favorite foxy emissary, I have seen a new opinion that he is ājust nowā as of ACOSF starting to display High Lord traits.
However, Lucien has been showing these traits the entire time. We can make speculations that he spell cleaved Hybernās restraints. We know heās a skilled enough warrior/ninja to survive the Night Court and the Continent. He was even able to sneak around UTM and help heal Feyre claiming that Amarantha gave him some power back.
Feyre thinks Lucien isnāt powerful after she meets the ICāand I argue thatās because he is purposefully concealing his hand.
If we are honest, a lot of what Lucien does as far as skill is off page aside from when he fights two of his brothers. Even then, heās poisoned with Faebane and the focus is mostly on Feyre trying to escape Eris so we arenāt given exacts. But there is concrete evidence that he is comparable in looks to our other favorite High Lords.
While we are speaking of his brothers, in ACOTAR Tamlin says this:
We already know that Lucienās brothers outwardly hate him (whether they really do) enough that two of them tried to kill him. Itās touched on in ACOWAR that they do so because he was able to socialize and meet people, especially people from Autumn Court. Feyre says that that is more like High Lord behavior.
But, we also have Tamlin saying that his brothers didnāt get suspicious and start to hate him until he started manifesting his power so much he wasnāt able to hide it.
So, he glamours himself. If Tamlinās attempt at glamouring Nesta is to be taken into context either Tamlin isnāt very strong at glamours or Nesta is too strong to be susceptible to them.
Lucien has been mentioned plenty through out ACOTAR to use glamours, and is apparently skilled enough to do this, while running on lower power because of Amarantha, to trick Rhys.
Rhys only realized Feyre was there when he saw her plate of food. Then, he started looking. The āmost powerful High Lordā in Prythian was successfully glamoured by half-powered āLittle Lucienā.
This isnāt the only time he was mentioned to have put up a glamourāa strong glamour. After Tamlin gives Feyre sight, she can see that everyone looks different except for Lucien.
Why would Tamlin inform Lucien to put up a better glamour against Feyre? Unless he knew Lucien was trying to hideā¦
And when Feyre finally sees past Lucienās glamour because of the Summer Solstice wine:
She was enamored with his looks enough that she wanted to paint him. Just like sheās been inspired to do with Tamlin.
Lucien has been powerful from the beginning of the series. The path for him to become something greater has been there since the very beginning and now that heās becoming a power player in upcoming novels, SJM is just reminding us that Lucien is called a fox for a reason.
I donāt think Iāve ever shared my favorite Lucien fancast yet but thereās this real handsome Brasillian model named JoĆ£o Jesus⦠lemme just show yāall the vision.

I was just talking to a friend about the scene in ACOFAS where Feyre insults Lucien for being friends with Vassa and Jurian.
Lucien says something along the lines of āyou can be as much of an asshole as that mate of yoursā.
Itās a little heartbreaking both ways. I donāt agree with what Feyre did in that moment, but I understand it.
When she was human, Lucien gave her hell for it. He teased her in very poor taste and made fun of everything mortal about her. It took awhile for him to forgive her for Andrasā death and warm up to her, but they clearly loved each other by the end of ACOTAR. He nearly died for her multiple times UTM.
I think, because he took to Vassa and Jurian āhumansāso quickly, he unknowingly hurt her. This caused her to be jealous so she lashed out at him and his new friends. Because they are struggling to maintain that friendship. They clearly still care for each other but have so much baggage to work through itās dicey.
And why itās so sad for Lucien is because now he likely feels he is being shamed for literal character growth. He was very adamant about how he thought the human lands were inhospitable and how disgusting humans were. Now, of his own free will, he is living there and helping them.
It breaks my damn heart, and I want Lucien and Feyre to sit down and talk through their guilt and grief and just be friends again. They both went through it and need to acknowledge each othersā pain and heal. š
Elain: Is something burning?
Lucien: Just my love for you
Elain: Lucien, the toaster is on fire
