         With a quick turn and a sudden blaze of FIRE, he sees the death of an oncoming assassin before he could feel their blade. It has been instinct to halt assassinations in their tracks, but scarcely on himself. He stares at the Crow, his eyes wide with frozen alarm in the cast of his ice coffin, and lifts an eyebrow. From the edge of his pocket lies a contract of assassination for the Inquisitor.

              “  Well. THIS is… interesting.  ” He stares a moment longer before glancing to the fellow mage, almost nearest to the assassin’s blade. “  Did he hurt you?  ”

   crystalline traceries of frost have gathered on his clothing, glittering in the pale sunlight. with a curl of his fingers he draws heat over his skin; vapour rises as the ice melts.

   showy, yes, but practical! he’s not all theatrics, you know.

   ❛ what a glorious end for the inquisition, no? our beloved herald put down by a common crow. it’s good that i was here—your reputation would be in tatters. not to mention your outfit. ❜

   if there is one thing upon which he prides himself, it is finding the levity in an otherwise dreary situation.

  granted, not everybody finds these things as amusing as he does, but he is never one to be discouraged.

   HE PRESENTS HIMSELF AS CALM ,  COLLECTED , UNWAVERING  ,  but there is also a subtle warmth that spreads through his bones and grips his very core . it is the same spark that FLARES UP whenever their hands accidentally brush when they play chess , whenever dorian catches him fixed in a lingering glance .   INFECTIOUS as it may be ,  it is concealed only with a soft smile as he speaks :   ❛   i am pleased to see that you’ve returned safely .     ❜

   he lets the implication hang. things are quite bad enough with demons falling out of the sky; of course they have to get involved with orlesian politics and venatori and maker knows what next—bears, probably, knowing his luck.

   the orlesians, especially, vex him. with the bloodshed and backstabbing they get up to, they make his dear homeland look civilised.

   well. up to a point.

   but enough of that. he is surprised by how pleased he is to see cullen. the sudden warmth blooming in his fingertips—like fire magic, that kind of heat— has him shamefully off his guard.
