Craft stores are just like "can I interest you in some...objects? some items? would you like some things?" and every time I'm like Oooh I love objects and items and things!
you deserve to live and not just survive

I literally have yet to see an intelligent argument from outdoor cat people. It’s always the same debunked bullshit over and over and then name calling and insisting their cat is “special”.
Some of my favorite outdoor cat hot takes:
1. The person who actually tried to argue that only SOME of their cats got eaten by coyotes and therefore they weren’t neglectful owners
2. Cats magically understanding how to stop and look both ways before crossing the street
3. The magical outdoor cats that live to be 25 and no it couldn’t possibly be different grey tabbies
4. If you don’t let your cat outside there is no possible way to provide enrichment. You either have to lock them in a barren room or throw them outside.
5. And the newest addition: if outdoor cats were bad they would be illegal.

the thing about literally every tumblr update is that i've spent so long on here that i've adapted to anything it can throw at me by sheer exposure. nothing short of burning this site to the ground and nuking the ashes until every user has nothing to return to could force me to evacuate, and even then it'd be in my own self interest rather than because i actually no longer feel welcome here. any other social media, on the other hand? i'd be dead on impact. i'm a highly specialized species adapted to survive the toxic nuclear waste dump that is tumblr dot com and if i move anywhere else the harsh new environment would rip my little online sicko beak to shreds in seconds.
Hello! As someone that dumpster dives year-round and usually finds a SHIT TON of perfectly usable items thrown away after the holidays, please listen:
Christmas is over and now comes along the weeks of people returning and exchanging unwanted gifts at retailers. A lot of these stores cannot actaully put a lot of these items back out on the shelf, (especially seasonal items or holiday themed) for one reason or another. Returned brand new items end up in landfills.
This is not only horribly wasteful when good items could be used by people in need, but also insanely bad for the enviroment.
So please consider:
Did you get insane amounts of those fluffy socks because they're like a default gift option? Donate your excess to a homeless or domestic violence saftey shelter.
Did you recieve a gift that is pretty much a jab to your identity from that estranged family member of yours that still doesn't use the correct pronouns for you? Oh, and they wont give you or 'lost' the receipt? Donate it.
Recieved those oddly named holiday themed lotions, perfumes and candles and can't stand the smell of them? These items most usually will not be put back on the shelf if returned and thrown away. Donate them. (Some charities may not accept them, some will. Check beforehand.)
Did you get one of those holiday throw blankets that are marketed just for this time of the year even though you already have several? Donate it.
I find tons of holiday themed clothing thrown away this time of year. Including ugly sweaters, hats/beanies, gloves, onesies, shoes, socks, ect. Perfectly fine items that are returned because people don't keep holiday themed stuff outside of holiday season. Regardless, they could be used by people who need warm clothing.
Electronics are not safe either. Perfectly working Items I have found in dumpsters in the past range from: a $300 roomba with the ticket saying it was returned because the customer didn't know how to work it (needed an app to control), not one but TWO tablets (Samsung and Kindle Fire) a working bluetooth speaker, ect. (Items that can not be donated I gave away.)
If you are not going to regift unwanted gifts and you are certain you are not going to use it, please consider donating it (or make a post and just give it away or sell the thing yourself.) You can go get $15 worth of store credit if you return the thing, but it's usually going straight to the trash afterwards.
Unfortunatly, stores like to try and destroy items they throw away as well. On lucky days, I find items that are still in their original package. Other times I find perfectly usuable items destroyed by spray paint or box cutters.
(ALSO this is not a post shaming people who return gifts for money to pay bills/buy food/basically survive. That is a completely different situation.)
Please research the places you donate to before doing so. Do not donate to the Salvation Army (despite them trying to do reputation control, they're still blatantly anti-LGBTQ) If you are a dumpster diver, remember to sanitize the items you find and let the organizations know where you recieved the items.
That's it. Thanks for coming to my soapbox!
Merry Christmeows!
Here are six more 2″x2″ paintings that I made for another ‘Microdose’ group show at Nucleus Portland (November 8th - December 1st 2020). I’m glad that they all found new homes after the show.
Prehistoric creatures featured: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, Dimetrodon, Ammonite, Elasmotherium, and Pteranodon!
It’s not just that the leaves will break down on their own (and enrich the soil while they’re at it!). During the winter, all sorts of insects use leaf litter for shelter, and they’re the first food available to larvae in early spring. Leaves also insulate the plants under them during the winter, which is important if you’re in an area prone to frost heaving.
One of the best thing you can do for native pollinators in your area is Leave the Leaves!

So I know how you feel about euthanasia in shelters, but what about pets? Both of the cats that I've owned that have died during my lifetime died at home after a few days of refusing food. We might have gotten a traveling vet to euthanize them if they seemed to be in a lot of pain, but we wanted them to live out the rest of their lives in a place that they were familiar with, with the family that they loved.
The one that died the most recently, about a month ago, had some sort of cancer, we think. The vet we brought her to wasn't exactly sure what it was, but said that she wouldn't live longer than a couple of months after that visit. She stopped purring when we pet her maybe a week or so before she died, and stopped eating much of anything, and I wonder whether we should have gotten her euthanized. I hope that our bias of wanting to stay by her side as long as possible didn't put her through more suffering than what was necessary, but I didn't want her last moments to be stressful...
You are, unfortunately, not going to like my answer.

I felt an enormous amount of guilt euthanizing my former rabbit Wheat Thick, because I did it before the worst symptoms of her fatal conditions set in. the opioids were effective, and she was still active with a good appetite when she died, and quite aggressive about running up to us to badger for pets!
my guilt ended after I received her cleaned skeleton, and saw the damage done to the bones of her face. she had a foreign object lodged in her naval cavity that would have moved deeper until it suffocated her, and in the interim the infection had been attacking the sorounding area and turning the thinner edges of her skull to lace.
even when you think you’re euthanizing too early, you’re probably underestimating how bad the animal is actually feeling because (especially in stoic animals like rabbits and birds) hiding pain is so instinctual.
euthanasia is something that hurts the owner while delivering a peaceful end to the pet, and it’s a pain we should be willing to bear for them.
here comes THE BOY!!!
