Scene Prompt
The sun beats hot on A’s neck as they sit on the edge of the driveway in their suburban neighborhood. The road directly in front of them glitters with droplets of spilled oil leaked from cars. A flicker of movement catches their attention, and they look up to see a gray cat walking towards them. A smiles as it plods forward slowly; then, without warning, it disappears.
“What the-?”
Between the space of one breath and another, the cat reappears, never missing a beat as it steps closer to A. A rubs their eyes, a trickle of sweat running down their forehead.
They’ve just decided that it must have been their mind playing tricks on them when it happens again. In the time it takes to blink, the cat is gone and then back again. It’s moving faster now, in and out of focus as it reappears and disappears.
A scoots backward, gravel digging into their palms as they try to put as much distance between themself and the cat as possible. Its eyes are growing wider and wider with each second, its paws hitting the ground, vanishing, reappearing. A’s breathing is coming out in gasps now. They struggle to their feet as a gray blur lands on the pavement with a thump.
It’s not a cat.
