Conservatism and “choice feminism” use different approaches to reach the same goal: women being grateful for their role within patriarchy, equating that gratitude with their self worth and therefore attacking all criticism of the status quo as an attack on themselves.

Duty is the underlying principle for how women are expected to behave under conservatism. Duty to their families, to their communities and to religions. The endless duties a woman has is framed as being part of a privileged position that she is to be grateful for. Her ability to make an informed choice is most of the time not even nominally considered a priority, on the contrary women having choices may be explicitly condemned on the basis that it interferes with their duty. Any criticism of the status quo or the context a woman lives in is seen to be a threat to the gratitude a woman has for getting to perform her duty.

“Choice feminism” is most prominent in societies that have at least a nominal importance placed on individualism and liberty. But rather than focusing on giving women more choices, it asserts that everything a woman does is her own choice, that she is empowered and liberated. To suggest otherwise or critically analyse the context in which a woman makes her choices is considered to personally demean her and threaten her gratitude that she is empowered and liberated.

To challenge either of these ideologies then is to challenge the attachment of women’s self worth to the status quo and her role within patriarchy. But acknowledging that many of the differences between these ideologies are superficial is a start.
