TW: Poison, Murder Attempt
Born Tuyet Bai, Sarina Bergmann is the only daughter and heir to the Bai hotel chain. The Bai family has several hotels in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, predominantly in Vietnam where Sarina and her family are from. Sarina’s birth had complications which combined with her mother’s pre-existing heart condition led to her death a few days after Sarina was born. Her father married Romilda Grimhilde when Sarina was three years old. Romilda is vain, manipulative, and cold-hearted a stark contrast to her step-daughter’s optimistic, sweet, innocent personality. When Sarina was six, her father died in a suspicious car accident. The car accident left Rowena in charge of the hotel chain, at least until Sarina would inherit it when she would turn twenty. Romilda put Sarina to work as a maid, at first around the house and then at one of the hotels, and limited her access to the family money. Jealous of her young step-daughter’s good looks she gave her old hand-me-down clothes and treated her more and more like the help and less like family. As Sarina got older and told by people that she got prettier every year as she grew, her step-mother grew more and more jealous and began to treat Sarina more and more cruelly.
Eventually all this jealousy and cruelty led to Romilda making a couple attempts on Sarina’s life. When Sarina was eleven years old she began to develop curves and look more like the young woman she was slowly becoming. To “reward” her Romilda gave her an expensive looking first bra; however, when she tried it on she started to feel ill and like she couldn’t breathe. Sarina tore it off assuming that it must be too tight and almost immediately felt better. Romilda tried again to murder Sarina on her twelfth birthday: she gave her a fancy hair comb that she had poisoned similar to the corset. Once again Sarina tried on the gift from her step-mother not having learned from the last time. Sarina quickly got a very strong headache and began to feel dizzy after putting the comb in her hair. She passed out from the pain after a few minutes collapsing on her bed. When she passed out and collapsed the comb fell out of her hair and the poison slowly began to leave her system.
Rowena tried to act like everything was normal after the first two attempts playing them off like little accidents. She brought Sarina with her on a business trip to Germany where she hired a hitman, Warren Jager, to kill Sarina. Sarina had become suspicious of her step-mother and began carrying extra money to run away in case Romilda tried again. One evening near the end of the trip Sarina was on her way back to the hotel when a strange man cornered her. He pulled out a knife and it looked like he was prepared to stab her when all of a sudden he changed his mind and lowered it. He was unable to kill such a young, sweet girl like Sarina. Instead, the man, Warren, told her how Romilda had hired him to kill her and instructed her to use her resources and run away as far as she could. She ran away, crying, and stressed not sure where she would go or how she would get by. She ran right into a woman, a Mrs. Bergmann, who taking pity on the young girl offered her a place to stay. Sarina agreed and ultimately ended up moving in and being adopted by the Bergmann’s taking their last name and changing hers from Tuyet Bai to Sarina Bergmann.
Sarina quickly grew very close to the seven Bergmann sons especially the second oldest Gustaf and the youngest Demien. A shared interest in biology and being the same age caused her to grow very close to Bastian who tended to blush and get tongue-tied around her which she finds adorable. She considers all the boys her best friends and her brothers. The two oldest Dwight and Gustaf act like her older brothers and are especially protective of her after hearing about her relationship with Romilda. At university she decided to study biology hoping to become either a doctor or nurse.
Here she met Florian Schulz, a young man a couple of years older than her, also interested in making the world a better place. They bonded over a love of animals and similar taste in music and started dating. Her life felt like a fairytale but this all came crashing down when she read in the news Rowena taking over as CEO of Bai hotels, claiming that after so many years since Tuyet/Sarina’s disappearance she was considered deceased. Sarina couldn’t stand the thought of her step-mother taking over and ruining her family’s company.
When she found out Rowena was moving to Portus Cale to open a new hotel there Sarina and Florian moved. Her brothers followed her after finding out that she was going after Romilda. Sarina has been preparing for conflict with Rowena anticipating her trying to kill her again which isn’t a false idea, Rowena has started experimenting with poisons again. This time she worked on a poison apple that would make Sarina ill slowly weakening her. Since the poison was not in clothing this time there would be no way to take it off and the fairytale idea of a romantic true love kiss would put her into a sleep like death. The only way she would be able to wake from would be a familial type of love that Rowena believes would be impossible since all of her family is dead. Gustaf offered the poison apple to Sarina and ever since the girl felt something strange within herself, but sometimes she just fades and no doctor can figure why her body is acting so weird. Now Sarina is sick without her knowing and the clock is striking, will she be able to survive her poisoned apple?
