bethesda making a vault origin into the unshakable cornerstone of their fallout is especially ridiculous when you put it into perspective and drill down on it, realizing that even in fallout 1, the game that sets that precedent, the archetype of the character as The Vault Dweller is like, entirely irrelevant. it's very much just the inciting plot and very rapidly becomes nothing to the character as they adapt to being simply a wastelander. day 1, tandy is referring to you as a traveller. most people dont even believe you if you mention being from a vault, if they even believe vaults are real at all. its such a minuscule part of a vast world and to make it the epicenter of the franchise is just so boneheaded. you think if fallout 2 released and it was just like okay, here you go. you're from a Different Vault this time! different number, same suit! yep. go do basically everything you already did, but palette swapped to some different enemies, different names for basically the same towns, the same general cast of ragtag characters. virtually no world progression as everything has to stay run down ruins and scrap shanties. im just saying i dont think it wouldve gone over as well
