when you think of a stupid joke and it has a wikipedia page
the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into âinclusive restroomsâ and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that couldâve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. Iâve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you
This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.
This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.
I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that âbathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how theyâre constructed, so no wonder women donât want men in the same bathrooms as themâ and when I pointed out that we could just⌠build better bathrooms⌠with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said âhonestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldnât we already be doing it?â BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Havenât you noticed that menâs restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Havenât you noticed that womenâs restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are âinclusiveâ in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesnât matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesnât matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.
Seattle's SEA-TAC airport has an all gender restroom that's a row of about a dozen fully enclosed separated little rooms that lock, with a shared bank of sinks and it's great. Love it. Lot of very strange encounters at the sinks, feels odd the first few times! But people laugh it off almost instantly. Because it's not actually a big deal to share a sink.
Wukong, what have you done this time!

Hey everybody if you enjoyed watching me liveblog my slog through Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire I wrote down some of my thoughts and you can read them a week in advance for the low low price of one American dollar.
***
Edward Gibbonâs The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire from the Age of the Antonines is, in no uncertain terms, the longest book I have ever read. It encompasses the 1st through 16th centuries of the common era, totalling roughly 1.8 million words and requiring approximately six days of my one human life to listen to the entire book on tape. To use one ignoble comparison, itâs more than twice the length of Ayn Randâs Atlas Shrugged. This terrible fault is not helped by the fact that Gibbon was a most economical writer; every page is packed with detail and every one of the 1.8 million words seems to be in the right place.
Walter Bagehot relates in an anecdote that the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Gibbonâs fellow member of Parliament, once in a session of Parliament compared the British Empireâs deplorable treatment of the Indian subcontinent to the lupine behavior of sundry Roman emperors one might read about in âthe luminous pages of Gibbonâ; Gibbon, a man of many contradictions, was a staunch supporter of Indian independence, and was moved by Sheridanâs compliment, though Sheridan would later clarify that heâd misspoken, having meant to say voluminous.
Between its size and its scope, any attempt to reflect upon the luminous pages is necessarily a voluminous undertaking, and a comprehensive analysis is utterly out of the question; one might as well try to chronicle the decline and fall of the Roman empire from the age of the Antonines (absurd, I know). . . .

I got a 4 min long video of Kimchi dreaming today, so here's a clip
You get the whole walk cycle and the little sprint at the end.
Sometimes her sprints last for like 4 or 5 seconds and she can shoot herself off the couch or into a wall if she gets a grip with her back claws. If she does it next to a wall, her head smacking into it sounds like someone is trying to break into the house. She doesn't wake up.
Later in the dream she injured her paw and was limping, and earlier she caught something and ate it.
such insolence... guards? seize her! ...no. stop. not like that. you are doing it gay. why are you seizing her gay style

When I was training to be a paramedic, we had one student ask the instructor what to do in the event of a marijuana overdose. The instructor said "Tell him to take two twinkies and call you in the morning."
Being an adult will have you unironically craving a vegetable
Being an adult will have you unironically sad about a parasite outbreak in fresh vegetables.
Iâm actually kind of glad aspartame is the latest food additive boogeyman for crunchy people, not because I think it is terrible for humanity but because it is a major migraine trigger for me and makes me violently ill. Itâs hidden in so many things for no fucking reason, liquid medicine, mints, drinks that arenât even marked diet. There are so many times Iâve bought something that had sugar in it and looked at the ingredients and realized it also had aspartame in it OR drunk something and gotten sick and realized it was on the ingredient list. Itâs my fault for not checking but there are so many other artificial sweeteners that donât have that controversy behind them and donât have so many people reporting adverse effects but itâs like aspartame manufacturers are pitching their product left and right. Itâs kind of nice to see products marked with âNO ASPARTAMEâ now.
Iâm not trying to play devilâs advocate about the Tolkien and race post, I agree with most of what youâre saying about the denial. But modern non fiction Marxist critics forget one thing that hopefully fandom doesnât, that is to give the author grace instead of immediately deciding that the racial politics of his work is intentional. I accept Tolkien was a conservetive, but I find it hard to believe that he was exposed to anti racist thought like we are today. I think itâs important to acknowledge the biases in his writing, but not decide it as intentional, because heâs a linguist based in a very white part of England, whose background is in European history who did not anticipate a world where migration is the norm. Of course that doesnât make the text less racist but itâs an important thing to consider. Thatâs all, I agree with your other points.Â
Thanks for the question, and please bear with me re asks gang, I was stupid enough to leave inbox on for a while, not realising the post would break containment, so Iâm snowed under atm â ď¸
So thereâs a lot of talk about Tolkien being âof his time and classâ but precious little about what that environment actually looked like other than comparing him to his fellow religious conservative Oxford dons. âOf his timeâ is not a neutral statement and it certainly isnât applicable to Tolkien, but more importantly, ânorms of his timeâ seem to often be, in this fandom, calibrated to âwhat Tolkien saidâ rather than âwhat was actually happening thenâ.
Anyway, I will try to be a little more direct than in that last post. So the âthe fundamentally racist elements of the legendarium are because Tolkien was a man of his timeâ line really annoys me (and others!) because imo it lets Tolkien's own Oxford tea table stand in for the entire twentieth century as if there wasn't an entire world outside the Inkling Orgy arguing furiously about race and empire.
I can give you an example literally from Oxford itself! The Indian Majlis had been meeting at Oxford since 1896! The Majlis, for those who might not be aware, was a full-on political and debating society which produced a fuckton of the people who'd go on to lead independence movements across South Asia. This was not some obscure footnote he would need to trudge to a specialist archive to dig up, and I can confirm that attending debates and discussion groups is, was, and has always been a large part of Oxford University life. Ie this was happening in his university in his lifetime among people of his class group he'd have had every opportunity to meet and engage with, whose existence he absolutely would have been aware of.
I have a longer post cooking abt the historical elements of Tolkien as a man of his time re ideological genealogies and contemporaries, but in the meanwhile I just want to say by his own letters (letter 83, written in 1944), Tolkien was an avowed supported of General Franco, which a) most writers of his generation were in active and public opposition to Franco and b) Tolkien spends a not inconsiderate part of his letter bitching about how the notoriously conservative C S Lewis himself is opposed to Franco and infected by "Red propaganda" and c) if it comes to fellow Catholics, Graham Greene himself opposed Franco, even if he was unhappy abt murders of priests. And I also think it is very important to note re the stewarding of these conversations that there are exactly two papers on Tolkien's support for Franco, one by an independent scholar and one by the head of the Tolkien Society in Spain, who managed a private interview with Priscilla Tolkien and who cited her godfather having been a Francoist himself - and THAT author is, guess what??? a fucking Francoist himself. The conversations and scholarship about Tolkien are NOT happening in a neutral and "normal" space.
I get the importance of the transfem community warnings but sometimes I see shit like girls talking other girls out of trying to get their teaching certificates because of the potential for harassment from conservative parents and idk that's very real but also at a certain point we are just doing preemptive hiring discrimination to ourselves
Like on the one hand it is very real that societal transphobia would like to see us all unemployed, forced to do survival sex work. But also that's not the only reality available to us at this point! And sometimes I worry that we are self policing in a way by flooding so many trans girls with this message of "your only options are to get super good at onlyfans or be Raytheon's strongest coder" when like, so many of the women I know are teachers, home care workers, nannies, day care workers, postal workers. Not glamorous, but like, idk the world of lower middle class pink collar jobs is available to us more or less at this point. Other girls have office jobs, some girls have to work food service and retail. But we get to exist in some form besides either NEETs or internet famous porn girls. And obvi hiring discrimination is real, and obvi disability issues come into play for a lot of us that makes a lot of the work I just mentioned inaccessible. I'm not saying things are sweet out there. But there is a world out there where you can live. Maybe not in the exact way you want, maybe not super easily, but you can live.
need everyone to know that the artist who created this iconic artwork:
is STILL creating wolf art TO THIS DAY. TEN YEARS LATER. proof that the world is beautiful. her username is wolfroad! you can find her art right here, and here are a few of her more recent pieces that I absolutely adore:
checked her page today and I think this might be because of everyone who saw this post and went to support her and show her art some love. the power of spotlighting an artist!! if you know an underappreciated artist, telling people about them could mean the world. [:
