"I just don't think it's fair that you have to skip a turn."
"It's literally in the rules!"
"You just made that up"
"I did not!"
The thunder rumbled in the distance outside, as the group gathered together in Billy's living room. He invited everyone over for a game night, but of course, Agatha and Rio were extremely competetive.
"She's right," he muttered, "you skip a turn if you get hit with the plus two."
Agatha rolled her eyes, "Well I don't like that rule. It's stupid."
Rio laughed, pointing towards Agatha's cards, "You literally have like thirty, you're so bad at this."
Agatha didn't hesitate as she charged towards Rio, before Alice and Jennifer quickly held her back. Rio smirked at her, as she placed down her final card.
"I win."
Agatha threw her cards down, crossing her arms in frustration. "Whatever. It means nothing anyway."
"If it meant nothing, you wouldn't be this upset." Rio smirked, making Agatha scoff at her in disgust.
Alice stepped in between them, holding a box, "How about we play Cluedo instead?"
"That's my favorite!" Billy grinned, and everyone sat back into the circle they had formed, which they'd stepped back from after Agatha and Rio turned into Uno finalists.
Alice opened the box and took out the contents, the board, cards, and the figures. Billy grabbed some pencils he had laying around and passed them round to everyone. Agatha was already adamant she was winning, although that was her mindset for literally anything she played.
Meaning she was very upset when Rio won again.
"I'm not speaking to you for the rest of the night, you know." She mumbled angrily.
"Sure." Rio replied, and trying but failing to hide her smirk. Of course Agatha didn't mean it.
Billy chuckled and stood up, heading towards the kitchen, "Does anyone want another drink?"
The majority agreed, as he took some soda cans out of the fridge, "Now, how about we put a movie on instead?"
"Oh, that would be lovely!" Sharon exclaimed, "Games can get quite intense with, well..."
Agatha's head shot towards her, making the group chuckle. Billy rolled his eyes and grabbed the remote, "What're we thinking?"
"Something scary. It's almost Halloween, after all." Rio suggested.
"Oh, I'm not very good with scary movies..." Sharon spoke, making Lilia scoot closer to her.
"You'll be absolutely fine, dear. I assure you. When you watch them, picture the actors behind the scenes..."
Lilia rambled on, as Billy flicked through the channels. Alice pointed at the screen, raising an eyebrow. "Hey, that looks pretty good."
"You haven't seen Friday the 13th?" He turned to her, and she shook her head.
"I haven't either." Jennifer spoke up, making Billy gasp.
"Have any of you even seen it?"
Everyone shook their heads.
"Friday the 13th it is."
They got comfortable on the couches, except for Rio and Billy who preferred to stay on the floor. Rio sat close to the couch, a soft smile on her face as Agatha ran her fingers through her hair from above. Alice and Jen sat next to each other, but kept a very awkward distance, as Sharon was already hiding her face in Lilia's shoulder before anything even happened.
Five minutes in, Sharon stood up, "I need to use the restroom, excuse me."
Rio smirked, whispering, "I don't think her bladder likes this movie."
Sharon headed up the stairs, and went straight into the bathroom. After using the toilet, she washed her hands in the sink, while accidentally using way too much soap.
Before leaving, she stopped to fix her hair up in the mirror. As she turned back around, she stepped onto a wet mop that had been left out of the bucket, causing her to slip. She landed on the floor, and-
...
?
???
It smelt damp.
There was a strange electrical hum, yet it was the only sound there.
She held her back as she stood up.
And was met with the most generic yellow wallpaper she'd ever seen.
"Billy?" She called out.
There was no response.
She took a step forward, taking a look around her. There seemed to be another room in front of her, which connected to some hallways. She turned around to see where she came from, but there was nothing. Just the same, yellow wall behind her.
...
Ten minutes go by.
"Hart's been in there a while." Agatha commented.
Billy bit his lip, "I'll go check on her."
He paused the movie and walked off. The rest of the group turned to each other to fill in the silence. "People in horror movies always make the worst decisions." Jennifer commented, and Alice quickly nodded along.
"Or they fall over mid air."
Lilia laughed, agreeing with them both, "It's ridiculous. They have no survival instincts."
Rio turned to Agatha who was still sitting on the couch above her, "You know, your hair looks insane right now."
Agatha glared at her, "Excuse me?"
Rio laughed, "Well I mean, you never brush your hair."
Agatha gasped, "I always brush my hair!"
"No you don't."
"Yes I do."
"Then why does it look like that?"
"Because-"
"Guys, I can't find Sharon." Billy interrupted them, appearing at the doorway in a panic.
"Who's Sharon?"
Rio groaned, "Jesus, Agatha. The old lady."
"... But that's Lilia?"
Lilia gasped, "How dare you!"
"Guys!" Billy shouted.
Everyone went quiet. "What do you mean you can't find her?" Alice asked.
"Well I knocked on the door," he started, "and after she didn't reply after a while I just went in, in case she fell or something, and she's literally not there."
Agatha scoffed, "You take your eyes off of her for one second and-"
"Agatha, just be serious for one minute!" Jennifer interjected, making Agatha put her hands up in defense.
"I'm just saying-"
Rio stood up from the floor, "She couldn't have gone far. Let's just look for her. She probably got lost somewhere."
"In a two bedroom house...?" Lilia whispered.
"Come on, she's here somewhere." Alice spoke up, sitting up and prompting the others to do the same.
Rio made her way up to the bathroom where Sharon was supposed to be, and took one look inside. Her eyes ran over the room, before they landed on a tall cabinet. Some items had fallen off the top of it where Billy had carefully placed some decoration. She kneeled down to pick them up, when her eyes landed on a specific corner on the floor. There was a tiny, glowing crack. She leaned closer, and peered inside, being met with a blurry yet recognizable image of another room.
"What the fuck?"
She took a step back from whatever she just looked at. No way he had a secret basement he didn't tell them about?
She stood up, walking back downstairs to a very upset Billy on the couch. "You never told us you had a secret room."
The fear in his face turned to pure confusion as he looked up, "What are you talking about?"
"There's literally some sort of secret trapdoor in your bathroom." She gestured towards the stairs, "It looked creepy."
Billy stared at her, almost emotionless, "Why are you joking when we've literally lost Sharon?"
"I'm not joking!" She exclaimed, "Come and see for yourself!"
"Fine." He grunted in frustration, "Show me this mysterious place that I apparently have in my house yet have no idea about."
Their voices trailed off as they headed upstairs, and Agatha shook her head in disappointment. "How can someone disappear in a house. I mean seriously, we can't take her anywhere."
Alice rolled her eyes as she came out of Billy's bedroom, "Are you going to help, or just sit there?"
"There's like five of you all wandering around looking for her. There's not that much room to cover."
"Yeah, but-"
"Guys."
Their heads turned towards Billy who was standing at the foot of the stairs, his face completely pale, "Come upstairs."
Agatha's face serioused as she got up, following behind the rest of the group as they all trailed behind Billy and Rio to the bathroom. He silently pointed towards the floor.
"Who just leaves a mop on the floor?" Agatha grumbled.
"That's not the point," Jennifer interrupted, "I see it."
Alice was the next person to notice, "What the hell is that?"
"It just looks like a light to me." Lilia replied, but Billy shook his head.
"No, there's something there. I looked into it."
"So just pick it up!" Agatha sighed, looking at Billy in disbelief.
"Agatha." Rio stepped in front of her, "Just take a closer look. That's a whole other room in there."
Billy was pacing, "I don't get it. I would've noticed it before. Has it always been there and I was just oblivious?"
Rio put a hand on his chest, stopping him, "You know, some things had fallen from the cabinet. Maybe it caused the floor to break and revealed... That?"
He shrugged, "I don't know. But Sharon isn't anywhere in here, and suddenly this thing has appeared in my bathroom."
Everyone went quiet as they stared at it again.
Agatha stood back, clapping her hands together, "Well, who wants to go and explore the mysterious basement?"
No one responsed.
"I should go. It's my house, after all." Billy finally spoke.
Agatha smiled proudly, "Fantastic. Off you go then."
Billy almost seemed shocked, yet not surprised by Agatha's quick response. He took a breath, and approached the light. He press his hand up against the wood, only to be met with nothing.
Literally. he felt nothing.
And then he smelt it.
The damp.
He quickly lifted himself off of the carpet, looking around at whatever place he was in.
"What the actual fuck?" He called out, turning around to look at the rest of the group, only to be met with no one. Wherever he came from didn't exist.
"No no no no," He panicked, looking up at the roof to see if he could find a split in the tiles, but there was nothing.
"Sharon?" He called out, "Are you in here?"
...
Meanwhile, Lilia was screaming at the sight of the boy just vanishing into thin air.
"He's just gone!" She exclaimed, "What kind of dark magic is this?"
Agatha's face was blank, simply staring at the spot silently. After a few more seconds of silence, she spoke. "We need to go in there."
Jennifer's eyebrows furrowed, "I don't know about you, but I am not-"
"I don't care. We have to go after the kid, now!"
Alice interrupted, "We can't just go in blindly, we need a rope or something."
Rio moved first, "There's a store like ten minutes away. I'll grab one."
Alice shook her head, "I don't think there's time for that!"
"Yeah well I doubt he just has a long rope in his house." Rio snapped back, "I'll just go. You might as well look to see if he has anything around."
Agatha went to stop her but realized she was right. Sure, it would take longer till someone would be able to get to him, but it was extremely unlikely he'd just own something like that.
"Okay, just go. Quickly. Actually, take his car." Agatha replied, dragging Rio out of the bathrom and quickly opening his bedroom door, rummaging through his things, "Here."
Rio paused, "Why do you know where his keys are?"
"It doesn't matter! Go!"
"Okay, okay." She took the keys off of her, and ran downstairs and out the front door. She just had to hope that they sold a long enough rope. Maybe some Pepsi, too. And salt and vinegar chips.
Meanwhile, Lilia and Jen were almost in tears as they held onto each other, "What the hell are we supposed to do?" Jennifer cried out, "Why can't we even see him?"
Agatha grabbed onto Jennifer's shoulder's, shaking her sharply once. "That's what we're going to find out. Stop panicking, because you're not helping."
Jennifer took a deep breath, then nodded, "Okay. Yeah. It'll be fine. We'll find Billy and Sharon, safe and sound. Right?"
Lilia smiled at her, nodding reluctantly. "Mhm."
It took Rio approximately seven minutes to get back to the house, with two bags of items.
Agatha snatched the one, "What is all this?!"
Rio stammered in defense, "I just, you know, maybe we'll get hungry."
Agatha rolled her eyes, "Where's the rope?"
Rio froze, "... Oh."
Agatha bit her lip, fisting her hand, "Are you serious?"
"Lucky for you," Alice interrupted from behind, "I found a rope by his front porch."
Agatha pointed a finger at Rio, "You got lucky. Come on, let's go."
They all gathered back into the bathroom, staring at the ground. Lilia and Jennifer were still holding each other, and Alice began to tie the rope around her waist.
Agatha's eyes widened, "We didn't even need to discuss who goes, then."
Alice shook her head, "By the time we argued it would've taken too long." She picked up the other end of the rope. "Can I trust everyone to keep hold of this?"
Everyone nodded in agreement. Jennifer took hold of the end first, prompting everyone else to do the same.
"You got your phone on you?" Rio asked.
Alice patted her pocket where her phone sit, "I got it. I'll let you know if I find them."
Rio nodded, as Alice approached the gap the same way Billy did. She touched it first, before reaching her fingers into the gap.
...
And there were the walls.
And that disgusting, damp smell of something she couldn't quite figure out yet.
"Woah."
She turned around, only to be met with the surprise of there being no rope tied around her.
"Shit!" She exclaimed, looking around frantically to see if it had miraculously fallen off somewhere without her noticing, but there was nothing. As if it never existed in the first place.
"Jen?" She called out, looking up towards the roof. "Agatha?"
She rummaged through her pocket. She pulled out her phone to text someone from above. The first person in her contact list was Jennifer. She smashed against the buttons of her already slow device.
"Rope's gone. This place is creepy, please help"
She pressed send, but then her heart dropped.
NO SIGNAL
Shit.
...
"Why is the rope here?!" Jennifer panicked, "It was definitely tied around her!"
"Okay, calm down, let's just-" Rio began, but was interrupted again.
"I'm going down there."
"Jen, it's not a good idea!"
But she was already gone.
"I guess we're doing this." Rio muttered, and she disappeared just as the rest.
Lilia turned around to look at Agatha, who looked annoyed.
"What are you waiting for? Go down."
She sighed, taking a step in. Agatha was alone in the bathroom now, and she did not want to go down. But everyone was down there, including the woman she loved.
So of course, she followed.
"Well this stinks."
The four of them whipped their heads around, "You made it." Alice said, surprised.
She dusted herself off, "Let's go find teen and Hart, shall we?"
"Is no one going to talk about the fact that we just... Appeared in this place?" Jennifer threw her hands up, "I mean what even is this?"
"That's why we came down." Agatha patted her on the shoulder, and took the lead.
The group reluctantly followed her down into a hallway.
Ooh yay! Thank you, I actually love the professor aus!
(Also, sorry you had to deal with the whole mouth thing, when my retainer no longer fit I swapped to Invisalign retainers because my dentist could do that and so I didn't need to have a separate orthodontist anymore)
-🐇
Honestly when I first got the retainer I HATED it, but after I got used to it I felt thankful that I didn't have an invisiligner. I feel like both come with their cons 😭
Thankfully the bump is almost gone and isn't painful anymore so I'm not as desperate to get it sorted out, but like, my teeth are moving back and I don't want my parents' €2.5k and my pain to go to waste
I discovered Agatha Harkness (on Tumblr, funnily enough) back in 2022. I'm so used to all my favorite characters (in anime especially when I was younger) always, always always being straight, even if everything about them screamed not straight, It was the norm, as if creators were scared of having a single character being queer (ahem, Kyoka Jiro from MHA). When Agatha became canonically queer, at the time, it didn't feel super surreal, as at that point I had generally become more comfortable with my sexuality, until I remember what it was like being a young teen and remembering how I used to pray that there would be queer characters and queer representation, just someone that wasn't straight and "normal". The one character who had stuck with me for a long time, finally, broke the norm. They made someone gay. They had a gay kiss on screen, KATHRYN HAHN AND AUBREY PLAZA KISSING MADE OUT SOUND PEOPLE HAD TO TURN DOWN THEIR VOLUME BECAUSE THEY WERE LOUD AND but a real one that I think I was longing for so long. I don't think I'll ever be able to fully describe what exactly I'm trying to say, but all I know is that my 12 year old self would feel very special, that finally, something I wished for actually happened.
Hmmmmmmm, what about wildlife biologist Rio and anthropologist Agatha
Or alternatively a Bones au?

We're Creatures Anyway | Agatha Harkness x Rio Vidal
A/N: I started writing this the day I got the request, but finished it now. I wasn't completely sure where to approach this so I made it a mini professor AU as well, I hope you like it nonetheless! Also, my permenant retainer shifted while I was eating, then it must've cut the roof of my mouth because it's reacted badly and now this cyst like lump is behind my two front teeth, before said lump then also grew over the retainer. I was in agony but it's gone down now. I literally can't find an orthodontist. Anyway, rant over!
Summary: Professors Wildlife Biologist Rio Vidal and Anthropologist Agatha Harkness debate over who's career is more interesting.

"Class dismissed!"
Chairs scraped as students made their way out of Miss Harkness' classroom one by one. She was relieved to finally have her lunch break after three hours of answering questions as to why humans breathed, spoke, and existed in a certain way. During this hour however, her colleague who she pretended not to adore at all would always show up to eat with her. Just a few more seconds-
"Afternoon, Agatha!" Miss Vidal cheered, marching through the door and making herself comfortable on the front desk.
"Rio," Agatha greeted, smiling as she pushed herself back in her chair slightly, "how were your classes?"
Rio sighed, opening up a box of salad, "It was fine. They started debating on whether animals as a whole or humans were more intelligent than the other." She stated, "I mean it's quite obvious that, especially wildlife, are definitely better on a lot of levels."
Agatha paused mid burrito bite, "What makes you think animals are more fascinating than humans?"
Rio's head almost snapped towards her, staring in disbelief, "What do you mean, "how?" have you not watched like, a single nature documentary in your life?"
Agatha rolled her eyes, holding back a smirk, "Obviously, but I don't get how that is more interesting than literal humans? We're the most intelligent species on our planet."
Rio's eyes narrowed, "Did you know that chickens sing after they lay an egg to celebrate?"
Agatha raised an eyebrow, "Did you know that the placebo effect is very much a real thing?"
"Oh let's be for real Agatha, it's not."
"If I convinced you and you convinced yourself to believe that you had a fever, you would actually feel feverish."
Rio scoffed, crossing her arms as she glared down at the woman in front of her. "Okay. And if I left a baby cheetah with a family of wolves, it would grow up to behave like one."
Agatha blinked, "How is that relevant to what I said?"
"Because it is." Rio exclaimed, crossing her arms, as Agatha chuckled, before quieting.
She opened her mouth, then closed it again, trying to find the correct wording, "Would you say that," she paused, "humans are also classified as a type of animal?"
Rio raised an eyebrow, "I mean, yes. We're still a type of animal, just a smarter- Oh, fuck you."
Agatha cackled, "So you admit it!"
The green witch glared at her, trying to hide the amusement on her face, "That's not what I meant."
"It was."
"It absolutely was not."
"What did you mean then?"
Rio bit her lip, "Humans are just... Slightly more, evolved?"
Agatha smirked, "Okay then, I believe you."
"It doesn't matter much anyway. We're all some varient of a creature." Rio sighed with a small smile, "It's fascinating, isn't it?"
"Yeah." Agatha stilled, "I can't believe some people don't believe in evolution."
Rio chuckled, "Don't get me started on that."
The bell rang once again, signalling the end of their lunch break, making the two groan slightly.
"Well, I enjoyed this conversation with you, Agatha."
Agatha nodded, wrapping up the last of her food and stuffing it into your drawer, "Get back to your lesson now, Vidal."
Rio gasped, putting a hand on her heart, "Rude!" She scoffed, "I'll see you later." She winked, walking out of the room, making sure to leave the door open wide open after her.
Agatha smiled to herself, taking out her laptop as the first of her students came back into the room. She was very proud yet convinced that she beat Rio's argument, though.
Every now and then I remember Agathario is an actual thing and the character I loved for years is canonically queer. Something that I used to pray for growing up because I just wished that my favourite characters weren't "the norm".
